SK outrun fnatic in quarter-final marathon in Boston
SK are through to the semi-finals at the ELEAGUE Major's New Champions Stage after defeating fnatic 2-1 (19-22 on Inferno, 16-14 on Overpass, and 16-12 on Mirage).
The last quarter-final series featured SK and fnatic. The Swedish team started Inferno, which was their own map pick, on the T-side and picked up the pistol round victory with Jonas "Lekr0" Olofsson's quad kill in a 2vs4 post-plant situation. SK's response came in the next round as Epitacio "TACO" de Melo got a triple kill on the defensive side (1-1).
Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson clutched a 1vs3 to get an ace in the following round, putting his team ahead (2-1). fnatic grabbed two anti-eco rounds and a full weapon round to extend their lead to 5-1. SK saved two weapons in the sixth round and were able to buy again in the following one which they won to earn their second round (5-2).
Lekr0 showed up in the ninth round to get a 1vs2 clutch and a quad kill, making it 6-3. When the score was 8-5, Lekr0 got three Deagle entry kills on the A-site and fnatic went on to win the half 9-6.
TACO's entry kill in the second half pistol round paved the way for SK's round win but fnatic responded in the following round with pistols, making it 10-7. Even though fnatic were able to extend their lead to 14-7 and later got four map points at 15-11, SK won eight of the last nine rounds to tie the game at 15-15 and take it to overtime.
The teams moved on to the second overtime after the first one ended 18-18. Fernando "fer" Alvarenga defused the bomb in the first round of second overtime as Robin "flusha" Rönnquist didn't peek the angle in time. flusha got three entry kills in the following round to make it 19-19. fnatic got two match points after making it 21-19 and closed it out with a 4vs5 post plant victory (22-19).
The second map was Overpass where fnatic started on the CT-side. SK made it 1-0 after Marcelo "coldzera" David clutched a 1vs3 but KRIMZ responded with a triple kill in the next one (1-1). The teams traded rounds once more which tied the map at 2-2. Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo got a ridiculous Scout kill in the fifth round, leading the way for a round win (3-2).
fnatic's pistol round success in the second half went to waste as SK won the next round with a force buy and later made it 12-7 with the first weapon round victory. KRIMZ got a triple kill to earn fnatic's eighth round and clutched a 1vs2 to grab the eleventh one (13-11).
fnatic were able to get to 13-13 but TACO stopped the Swedes on their tracks in the twenty-seventh round with a triple kill which was followed up by FalleN's quad kill in the twenty-eighth round (15-13). FalleN & company finished it off in the ultimate round thanks to TACO who prevented a B-site push with a double kill (16-14).
SK kicked off the last map, Mirage, on the CT-side and won the first two rounds. fnatic bought early and took their first round to trail 2-1. fnatic went ahead 6-3 and won the half 8-7 with Lekr0's ace in the last round.
The Brazilian squad's T-side campaign got off on the right foot as they won the pistol round and the following anti-eco. However, fnatic saved some armors and pistols from the second round which they used to win the third round of the half (9-9).
Despite being 12-9 down, SK came back and won the map 16-12, taking the series 2-1 and moving on to the semi-finals at the ELEAGUE Major's New Champions Stage.
