SK win WESG North America Regional Finals

The North American Regional Qualifier for WESG 2017 has been brought to an end, with SK claming the #1 spot after a 2-1 victory over Cloud9 (16-9 Train, 10-16 Overpass, 16-6 Inferno).

This regional qualifier for WESG took place online, with six teams playing a BO1 round-robin format and all but one team advancing to the World Finals. After Mythic pulled out of the competition, all six remaining teams earned their ticket for China, even subtLe who finished with a 0-5 score.

The four best-placed teams after the group stage advanced to the playoffs. The two favorites Cloud9 and SK advanced to the grand final as expected, the former beating Swole Patrol and the latter getting a forfeit win over FRENCH CANADIANS. The third-place decider, which made the difference between a $5,000 and $2,500 cheque featured another forfeit, with Swole Patrol being the team to throw in the white towel this time.

SK secured a $20,000 prize by defeating Cloud9

Train was the map the grand final kicked off on, and despite it being Cloud9's, pick, the Brazilians were dominant right from the start. After an 11-4 CT half, it was just a matter of time before SK closed it out, with Marcelo "coldzera" David managing 30 kills before the end.

On Overpass, one of SK's best maps, a Timothy "autimatic" Ta-powered Cloud9 was able to plow through the Brazilians, finishing the Terrorist half with a strong 9-6 lead. After the switch, the Americans took the pistol and two followups, eventually closing the map 16-10.

Inferno came into play as the decider, but similarly to Train, SK got rolling on the CT side and didn't let go. A 13-2 half was kicked off by a force-buy win after the pistol, and a lead like that saw Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo and co. close out the game easily.

Faze choked, and SK didn't have their lineup. The level of play wasn't that special.

Its c9 fault that faze choked. Omegalul
2018-02-05 10:33
It's not. But it is part of the reason why the level of play wasn't particularly high this major.

Yanko is from Serbia and he's the main source of the praise. If you're going to say Gambit won a major, then you have to say that C9 did too.
2018-02-05 21:33
Various players have commented on it, if my opinion isn't enough. Friberg was talking about it in his stream just the other day, I can probably still send you a link to it if you want.
2018-02-05 22:41
Yeah I understand some of the maps were played poorly but the level was definitely better than past few majors. Gambit vs Immortals was a lul, Astralis just did rushes to win the final map (tec9 clutch and VP completely choked) and the last SK major was just SK stomping the shit out of Liquid who was only there because S1mple carried the shit out of them. I think the last "high level" for its time was probably back in ESL Cologne 2015.

SK had to play with felps, also played 6 maps in one day. No luck?
2018-02-05 13:00
Omg they had to play with felps oh no he’s like tier 4 player right? How does that make anything lucky felps is just as good as boltz and why does everyone act like that many games in one day is unheard of. C9 started 0-2 in the series and went on to win the major I’m gonna go with that took skill not luck
2018-02-05 16:04
Well, while the other teams had plenty of time to practice, SK just pracc 2 day with felps, and he was 7 months without playing in the highest level. Plus 2 bo3 on the same day... Congrats to C9 anyway.

AND SK ARE THE BEST TEAM SINCE 2016 ... SO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT

C9 best Overpass team atm? How are they winning this map against Faze and SK?
2018-02-05 09:57
No no.. SK was sloopy at overpass.. And C9, they played too loose.. SK wasn't expecting rank s type of plays.. Rushing all bombs like retards.. If it was on LAN and a serious tournament, C9 wouldnt have played like that and SK would've won.

Oh. Okay. I didn't really watch the game. Thanks tho.
2018-02-05 11:13
Still if a world class team can't handle rank S plays, are they really world class?
2018-02-05 11:20
World class teams play in a different style. More tactical.. Slow paced.. Respecting each other.. Sometimes when newcomers show up with some different pace and retard strats, it kinda works.. Like that rushing banana with mp9 from vega. FAZE wasn't expecting that. SK was not expecting Cloud9 to play like that.. (stupid).. But the kids are confident after winning the major.. Of course, we have to give credit to their aim being very good.. Cause you can't just rush without lading your bullets..
2018-02-05 15:07
No. A true world class team is supposed to be versatile. Take cloud9 for an example. They can do slow methodical plays as well as insanely fast paced envyus plays. A world class team should be ready for anything. SK clearly wasn't. And cloud9 played phenomenally, and not like rushing silvers A retarded strat isn't retarded if it works. Keep hating. C9 top 1 is coming whether you like it or not.
2018-02-05 15:25
When cloud9 really become a world class team we can say so.. They still have a lot to prove.
2018-02-05 17:54
Considering the fact that they came from behind and beat all the 4 best teams above them, three of them in best of threes, while on the verge of elimination to win north America's first major title, they've proven just about enough. I'd like to see SK or faze pulloff such a streak.
2018-02-05 18:10
You have such a short memory. liquipedia.net/counterstrike/EPICENTER/2.. This SK run was easily more impressive. And with probably the best finals of 2017. Also the level of play this tournament was much higher, with a very high level Astralis team. He is right, C9 still have a lot to prove over a long period of time to be called a world class team.
2018-02-05 22:49
That's a pretty shitty excuse though. SK took a chance in a crucial round in the first half and chose not to watch long at the begginning of the round. C9 rushed it and managed to control their economy for the rest of the half. That's not a rank S play. Also if you say c9 winning ovp doesnt count cuz it was online, same can be said on sk winning inferno
2018-02-05 13:37
Ex-cu-ses
2018-02-05 13:43

So you(and him/her/it) are saying c9 with Tarik, rush, and skadoodle in godly form had no chance vs SK? With the crowd behind them?
2018-02-05 11:57
Sure, C9 has a small chance if all of their players are performing very well. But in general SK is just on another level. And SK plays better against the crowd anyway, they had to go through a much tougher crowd in Denmark when playing against Astralis back when they were very good.

Cry is free Cloud9 won one major and you think you can talk about SK and SK fans? hahaha there's a long way to go for any NA team to be 10% of SK already is KEEP HATING ON US, WE'LL KEEP ON WINNING EVERYTHING! #RUNSKG
2018-02-05 19:00
Lol bragging anout an era of domination when c9 just won a major and SK just won a $20,000 tier 3 online tournament. Not to mention its only due to cold dropping a mad game. Sk have slumped, they all used to be monsters, now if cold doesn't carry its gg ez

Well its just a matter of time and C9 will be just c9. Im not hating them but lets be real. To have a god c9 team like in ELEAGUE Major they need autimatic performing well and not only that, they need Skadoodle at his best. If you dont believe that youre delusional. Stew and Tarik wont win games for you.
2018-02-05 15:25
If colds form isnt good then sk dont win. The others arent as good as they used to. Someone will catch up to cold eventually and then sk are screwed

Matches such as these can't dictate which team is better since the stakes were incredibly low. cssummit, Starseries and Katowice will show us which team is the best atm.

Both of the teams were already qualified. What they would win in terms of money is pretty much the average money received from one stream. Both of the teams played comfortably

I know, this match means nothing I meant c9 has to prove they are an elite still. Win 1 big tournament wont make them an elite team. They have to be consistent, top 4 places in big events beating elite teams and stuff.

Personal thoughts but If I wanted to know which team is better atm I gotta put only elite teams in the line. SK, FaZe, Astralis (even tho Ast arent that good atm). All of them are very consistent and making top 1,2 and 3/4 left and right. Teams like c9, North, Na`Vi is a bit far behind. tldr: In the upcoming events c9 will have a chance to prove they are an elite team and not to be considered the best
2018-02-05 17:04
Astralis didnt qualify for legends and just lost a player. I would back both navi and g2 over them

How is c9 not considered elite still? They were #5 team on the standings before the major. Not saying they are better than sk or faze or anything but they are still a super solid team atm and dont have to "prove" shit.

They are a not a elite team because, as you said, they are not better than SK or Faze. Faze, SK and Astralis (at least the old Astralis) are elite teams because they can all beat each other. We know that SK can beat Faze. We know that SK can beat Astralis. But we also know that both of these teams can beat SK too. And we know it because of their CONSISTENCY. Thats the word here, my friendo. Being a top #5 team and winning a major after beating SK and Faze is a REALLY impressive thing, and they deserved that major more than any other team. But, can they do it again? Can they do it without the crowd? Without the hype of a major? I really hope so, but only time will tell us. Only time will tell us if they are REALLY consistent Lets use Fallen, for example. We all know that Fallen is an excellent IGL, but he is not that much consistent as player. But, even if Fallen is on a bad day, SK still have a chance against Faze or Astralis Now, is it the same with C9? Tarik, Stewie and Skadoodle were ON FIRE in the major finals. But, if they weren't, would they still have won? Its hard to say. Please, dont misunderstood me, im not talking sh*t about C9 boys, they deserved the major, and they are def one of the best teams in the world. But they are not among Faze, Astralis SK Now, with the recent changes of Astralis, i truly believe that C9 can take their places, but only time will tell. peace

really? Dude, they are good, but not candidate to win every tournament. If you think that youre delusional. They are candidate to place top 4 at tournaments + with chance to win. But ppl will not pick them to win it over FaZe/SK/Astralis LOL You have to think they need skadoodle and autimatic performing well to win those tournaments m8

online LUL, and won bo3 easily
2018-02-06 12:27
c9 would beat them on lan 10/10 times
2018-02-05 17:55
Yeah sure... Because they needed 3 maps to barely beat them at the MAJOR with felps and with SK having already played a 5h BO3 prior :)
2018-02-05 19:12
They won an online qualifier for an event where both teams in the finals advanced to the LAN. I doubt c9 was putting 50% of the effort into it that they put into the major.
