Renegades confirmed at IEM Sydney

Striker
March 13th, 2018 00:23

Renegades have became the third team confirmed at IEM Sydney, ESL has announced.

After two weeks of silence regarding IEM Sydney invites, ESL has now announced Renegades as the third team confirmed for the Australian event, joining FaZe and SK.

At last year's event, Justin "jks" Savage & co. were unable to advance to the playoffs, most notably losing to local side Chiefs in the round robin.

Renegades will join FaZe and SK in Sydney

IEM Sydney will return to the Qudos Bank Arena on May 1-6, with double the amount of teams compared to last year, as ESL increased the participants to 16. The prizepool has also been bumped by $50,000 to a total of $250,000.

lul at this tournament, 3 spots for Asia and 3 spots for Oceania, what's the logic behind this???

Because it's in Australia?

So? Do you see big events on other countries with that same amount of spots, for that region, on a qualifier?
2018-03-13 02:47
Yes, European events are majority European teams.

That's because most of the top teams are from EU
2018-03-13 03:09
3 Oceanic teams and Renegades invite makes complete sense. IEM want to target the Australian public to attend the event. Furthermore, its the only main event we get here in Australia in a year, making the public wanting to go to the event more. We have a lot of Asian immigrants in Australia so they are targeting that demographic as well. It also provides a platform for home-grown teams. I really can't see a negative.

I don't have a problem with having Oceanic/Asian teams on tournaments, my point is that it's unfair with other regions who don't ever have a qualifier for themselves to events like these. Asian teams always have a spot for their region on big events, Oceanic teams most of the time, but SA doesnt have a qualifier spot on such events, the only way they can play on international events is at WESG and more recently on the NA minor, if they want to play on such events they need to move to NA or EU to have a chance to play a qualifier. They seem not to care about developing other regions, like SA, and it has bedn proven it's a region full of talent, but unfortunatelt they are very rarely given a chance to grow and break into the international scene. I guess I might have been misinterpreted by ppl, but I didn't mean to make fun of Asia/Oceania scene.

^^^^ also there’s 16 spots. Get the top 10 of the top 20 teams and give other scenes exposure.

Yeah, but what about African teams? LATAM teams? Why ESL only give exposure to Asia and Oceania? And it's not only because this event is in Australia, every other IEM tournament there is a Asia/Oceania qualifier spot

AU OCE scene has more depth. And location. I agree with you though

 |
Brazil junera
Well their scene has more depth because they always are given a chance, not that they shouldn't have their spot but other regions should have one of their own aswell. It's kinda unfair with, let's say SA, who can only try to qualify to events like this if they move to NA or else they will only be playing in Brazil for the rest of their lives.

Because ESL want to appeal to an Aussie crowd. Having a big cs event in Sydney would be pointless if there was only one Aussie team there.

Sure, but why 3 spots for Oceania qualifier (if they already invited Renegades ) and 3 for Asian qualifier? Wouldn't it be more fair to give other regions a spot aswell?

#144
 |
Australia KatVian
Of course it would be fair. But if you want the fairest system than we would probably just end up giving Europe 14 spots. Besides, I think by the sound of it most of the top teams will be there and it will more be a tournament with sick playoffs and a good group stage with lots of local teams.
2018-03-15 19:36
Because they need views. With more chinese and Korean teams(the qualified teams should be flash, tyloo and mvppk) they can "sell" better the event. Look, without any chinese team in playoffs and with a bad timezone, Kato had around 1mi chinese views in peak. So imagine now, with good timezone+a chance in playoffs? For sure they can reach 2 milion in peak. And that is the important. More people wstching, more money.

But do they really need 3 Asian teams for that? Isnt 1 enough? Same applies to Oceania
2018-03-13 02:53
The only match they will watch is with the asian team lul. There are 16 spots, just let them do their thing. I'm sure there's a thought behind it. More asian teams = more asian viewers. And we know for sure that there are a lot of asians in the world xd.

Brazil junera
Yes, I understand but what I wanted to do was to question why other regions are never given a chance on those events you know? Not that Oceania/Asia shouldn't be in there, it's just that we never see other regions being given a spot on such events.
2018-03-13 21:28
well maybe you're right that there should be more spots for other regions. but then again, the asia or au scene rarely get spots in eu or na tournaments.

I mean, spots for Oceania-only are more rare but most big events have an Asian qualifier spot or 2 and Oceanic teams are able to play on those qualifiers, especially ESL events.
