Cloud9 confirmed at IEM Sydney

Current Major champions Cloud9 has been officially confirmed on the IEM Sydney team list.

Shortly after mousesports' invitation a couple of days ago, ESL announced the North American side as the fifth team to compete at the $250,000 Australian event on May 1-6.

Cloud9 will be looking to improve on their results following a few disappointing exits recently at StarSeries i-League Season 4, IEM Katowice, and WESG World Finals.

Cloud9 will travel to IEM Sydney in early May

IEM Sydney will be the eighth event in consideration for the Intel Grand Slam, which will award a whopping $1 million prize to the first team that wins four out of ten premier events hosted by ESL and DreamHack.

Uh no. I think they are about equal. There's no clear better team.
2018-03-22 10:11
It’s a huge waste to invite more NA teams, there in only 2 decent ones (C9 and liquid), if they invite both then the NA qualifier slot will go to some useless team. Better give rest of invites to EU teams so we get the best possible event.
2018-03-22 12:06

That's exactly why you invite the NA teams so they get better... Some people need to get their head out their ass.

NA has had more chances than any other region. Even when C9 and Liquid was total shit they still got invites since they where the best in NA. ESL PL gives free slots to NA each season, the minor system makes it super easy to qualify from NA. How many free chances does NA deserve? Do you always see quotation as the solution for a weaker group? Reward before performance? Reward based on who you are or where you are from, not based on who performed the best?

Two spots for Asia and two for Australia would've been perfect. Three for each, is too much, will only make the overall level decrease.

Still too much. Australia already have Renegades invited, so two other Australian teams would be good already. Asia had lots of opportunities to play vs top teams, they always suck, only TyLoo was able to get good results (bo3 win vs LG in 2016 and bo3 win vs fnatic in 2018). Mongolz, Recca, Flash, DS and all others plays big lans here and there, they never showed any sign of evolution as well.

EU and NA idiots complained about the schedule all the time last time round so IEM decided to focus on Asian viewers instead this time because they can actually watch and now they complain about that too. Gotta love the CSGO fanbase.

People that complain about schedule are spoiled kids that don't realize there are lots of people living FUCKING FAR from their own countries, so they cry because the match will start at 4am or something like that. Complaining about time zones is something only true retards do. What I'm complaining about, is the LEVEL OF THE TEAMS, it's something very different.

You should be familiar now that tournament organizers don't always invite the best teams possible, or else VP would not have been at any T1 LANs for the past several months. I honestly think one spot for a local AU team and one for an Asian team is enough but hey if they decided to have more then what can I do? Most Aussies are just happy to have an international tournament in Aus.

We can do nothing, but we can post our opinions here, and that's what I did: 2 spots for AU 2 spots for Asia Would've been perfect.

No doubt tournament organizers go to sites like HLTV so I think posting opinions here is great. I just think people should stop the complaining that it will be a shit tournament because of them like no, there are 10 other teams who will provide just as good CS as ever before. Besides, nowadays there are so many tournaments in EU and NA (literally one every few weeks) that I don't think they should bother complaining about the one that will be different. Just be happy and watch the tournament is what I am gonna say, it will be fun! teams love Australia and no doubt the crowd will be even more energetic than last time. It will be one of the best of the year I imagine despite being one of the smaller T1 LANs.

Yeah IEM Sydney is not a T1 event, just like last year it will be T1,5. It will have the best teams, but half the teams will be so bad that upsets in group stage for the good teams is impossible.

The whole event was a fiesta mate chiefs made it to quarters bahahaha
2018-03-23 13:04

I don’t doubt it was a fiesta, but I would like to point out that there was no quarter final at that event, is was a Swiss BO1 with 4 teams going straight to semis. Chiefs did play in the last Swiss round vs Optics (both 2-2) but that is not a quarter. But if we count the north win as an upset, which is fine I guess even if North hardly is a top team, they should beat chiefs, which other upsets happened?

I know this is The big tier one Asian/Australian event of the year, but 3 Asian spots and 3 Oceanian spots seems like a huge waste of spots.

The idea is to give more ANZ/Asian teams the chance to compete against other teams that are much better than them. Big fish in a small pond rarely get a chance to improve their own skills.

Why liquid? There is an NA qualifier, if they invite all good NA teams that slot will go to some crap team, better invite EU teams now and liquid will qualify with 100% chance since rest of NA is so bad.

I can kind of understand the extra oceania slots due to it being in Sydney but with the renegades invite on top of 3 Asia slots it's going to be kind of meh event as far as groups like WESG.

Renegades = NA though? The core is Australian, but they are based out of America. They could earn a spot through the NA or AU qualifiers if they really wanted to. This is a chance for the local teams to play in the big leagues and gain the experience needed to improve rather than remaining big fish in a small pond.
2018-03-22 05:47

As for renegades I said that since the last tournament I saw them play at was the major and they went through the Asia minor. Though after what you said I took a look and saw that as of recent they have been going through NA qualifiers which is solid. Though these low tier Oceania/Asia teams getting ruined in group stage isn't quality experience for them since most of the top teams save strats against these teams and just slaughter them. These teams can get experience through EPL APAC and MDL. I am not saying that Asia/Oceania teams don't deserve qualifier slots but 6 slots for them seems like a lot when NA only gets 1.

Yeah, I get you but you've also got to consider that this is our one major tournament of the year. So for a lot of teams, this is their only chance to impress on the international level.

I guess that is fair since the last IEM in Katowice had 5 EU Qualifier slots. Plus you can't count any of the IEMs before since that was before they had so many slots.

I agree. 3 aussie teams is understandable but why are there 3 asian teams... just because au teams compete with asians but this is purely an issue of location. The only reason i have is that organisers want Aussie teams to make it to playoffs so dilute the competition with tier 5 asian teams who the aussies have been proven to be able to beat
