WCA groups come to a close; TeamOne & VG.Flash through to grand final
The group stage at WCA 2017 Finals has come to a close with TeamOne and VG.Flash topping their groups to advance to the grand final, while Quantum Bellator Fire and Next Generation will fight it out in the third-place decider.
The round-robin, best-of-three group stage kicked off the $63,000 tournament, as six teams battled in two groups for a spot in the grand final.
VG.Flash, who are fielding Zhuo "advent" Liang as a stand-in for WeiJie "zhokiNg" Zhong at the tournament, claimed first place in Group A after beating Recca as well as Quantum Bellator Fire after a tough series that included a quadruple overtime on Train.
The Russian squad came in second place with a win over the Indonesian squad, who also played with a stand-in, Nanda "asteriskk" Rizana, instead of Kennedy "Mirskie" Buntoro.
Group B was much less straightforward, as TeamOne, Next Generation, and IMBA.SAS finished the group with one 2-0 win and one 0-2 loss each.
That led to a three-way tie, in which the Brazilian side ended up on top with the highest round difference out of the three teams. As the team with the second-highest RD, Next Generation clinched second place to advance to the third-place decider.
On Monday, April 30, Quantum Bellator Fire and Next Generation will face off in the third-place decider before VG.Flash and TeamOne take the stage with the tournament's grand final.
