valens: "There's a bit less of natural chemistry"

Cloud9's coach, Soham "valens" Chowdhury, talked us through the team's disappointing results as of late and their progress with their new in-game leader, Pujan "FNS" Mehta.

Despite starting off well at DreamHack Masters Marseille, the new Cloud9 have now exited their second consecutive event in the group stage after placing 7th-8th at IEM Sydney and 9th-12th at ESL Pro League Season 7 Finals.

We approached Soham "valens" Chowdhury on the semi-finals day in Dallas to find out what's going on within the team and how they are adjusting to the new structure:

not much, just thinking how over rated fns is and why c9 even wanted him in the first place. they could have paid me 1/10th of fns buyout and I tell them its a shit idea and saved them 180k lul

Yeah sad tbh, expected a lot more of FNS but is just not working. When he went back to CLG the team actually got decent again and they were doing many upsets, everybody thought that was FNS brain achievement but it seems that at the end, it was the rest of the team carrying. SMH

hes a tier 2 NA igl, thats where he belongs and that's where he'll be decent. I wouldn't even put him on a team like rng or nrg

They will be a better team in the long run. Will take time to find that balance of styles. The loose style the rest of them are used to, and FNS structured style. I agree with valens

FNS needs to update his dated structured style tho, also c9 with this roster is much better with a more loose play style

Unreal that youd remove tarik as igl. It doesn't matter if he's not the deepest strategical thinker in the world, he had the personality to do it and the judgement to call for the right strat at the right time. No matter how simple they were.

I dont understand why they replaced tarik as IGL in the first place. never change a running system. That dude won them the major so why change IGL? Only stew and ska need to be replaced by someone equally skilled and that's it

2018-05-20 05:46
lol i mean next roster move is probably -fns +stewie again so i dont get why they waste everybodys time. It's well known NA can't play tactical so strat heavy IGLs will never work. Better to get 5 fraggers that work like Liquid and not try to be like 2014 fnatic with pronax or something.
2018-05-20 06:28
Yes. They need less chemistry, more physics. Like put the bullets on the enemies head pls

This team without stewie has not enough fire power. You can have all the strats in the world, but skadoodle and Fns are bots. And sometimes rush plays horrible aswell. Tarik and autimatic are pretty much the whole team.. And as you see with just two superstars is not enough. Liquid has 3 stars and 2 really good support players that can go off at anytime. Cloud9 needs to - ska +cerq/nifty and -FNS +Brehze/ethan

Aren’t brehze and ethan these eternal tier 2 NA players? Or have been for like 3 years in same spot

Hello everyone, do you think Astralis will win or Liquid. As I think is easy for Astralis
2018-05-20 09:21
FNS is a smart player, he just doesn't have the fire power Stew did. C9s problem is that they're aggressive, and when they are they struggle to get openings like Stewie did.

What's this meme that his buyout was 200k? His tweet is clearly a joke. You guys are idiots. It was reported Rush and Tarik cost about 100k in buyouts together last year. It would absolutely fly in the face of how C9 builds teams for them to have spent 200k on any player in NA except perhaps Elige. They are cheap. Some other buyouts we know of 20k for Stew, Autimatic free. No no no no way. I also gurantee you they made money on the stew thing once FNS was said and done. It's just how the org has always been run.
2018-05-20 16:54
They just need some more time plain and simple. Going from a super loose play style to a structured one take time. If they don't get rid of fns and give the team a lil more time they will do better. It's not all on fns. The players are starting with the strat he's calling then loose focus and go off and do their own thing. They need to break themselves of that. It's just a transition period. They will break out of it.

Cerq would be the dream pick-up though for Ska (if C9 would go for that buyout), and mixwell for FNS. Autimatic, RUSH, tarik, Mixwell, Cerq would be pretty nuts.
