compLexity beat BIG; to New Champions Stage

Complexity are the first team through to the New Champions Stage after beating BIG, 16-8, on Nuke.

Complexity kicked Nuke off with a good, clean, A rush, taking the site and winning the afterplant on the back of doubles by Bradley "⁠ANDROID⁠" Fodor and Shahzeb "⁠ShahZaM⁠" Khan. After winning the anti-ecos another A rush came from the North American side prompting BIG’s last two players to save their weapons. Complexity then found themselves on a 3vs3 afterplant on A with a 5-0 lead as ShahZaM got a double to close the round out and increase his team’s lead.

BIG were finally able to get on the board after losing the seven first rounds, but were instantly reset as Complexity once again hit the upper bombsite to keep wrecking their opposition. It was then that the Americans got completely blindsided as BIG won a full eco with a double by Fatih "⁠gob b⁠" Dayik and triple by Johannes "⁠tabseN⁠" Wodarz. The German-British side then stopped an A rush with four kills by gob b. Complexity were able to make it 9-3 to really hurt BIG’s economy, but three opening kills by the British AWPer around outer kept his team alive. Despite the weak start, BIG were able to bring it back to 6-9 before the half.

compLexity become Legends with a 3-0 record

The second half started with Complexity once again winning the pistol round, and although BIG won the forcebuy, a four-kill by Jaccob "⁠yay⁠" Whiteaker broke BIG’s economy as Complexity kept racking the rounds to 12-7 with BIG having to go on a full eco. Down 7-13, BIG were able to walk into B and after killing the only player defending planted the bomb and successfully defended it.

A huge double by Rory "⁠dephh⁠" Jackson to stop BIG from entering B following an opening frag from Peter "⁠stanislaw⁠" Jarguz then reset the German team. ANDROID then got a triple against the eco on the A site to get on match point. The American-British team then closed it out, 16-8, making dephh the first UK player to make it to the playoffs of a Major.

my point is, col would 9/10 times not win against either liquid or astralis, and dont try spin it another way. yet they get big, easily the objectively weakest team out of those three. in the exact same way, faze get mousesports in the 0 - 2 bracket, the obviously stronger team out of the 3 they could get, and c9 who have been god awful get freewinstrike. the seeding is messed up.

so if you look at it the other way, why should astralis or liquid be given a free win against col?

because they have proven themselves much more, beating high tier opponents and being a consistent top ranked team in the world, which is why proper seeding should be done. if col or big are worthy of going 3 - 0, they should be able to prove it against the best teams at the tournament, rather than getting it against easily weaker opposition. instead, col got a much easier win, and on the other side, c9 got a free win over winstrike. what would you rather see, high tier competition in the higher parts of the biggest tournaments of the year, or more blowout games with barely any entertainment value? answers clear

Col played very well(probably the best they've ever played) but yeah they got pretty lucky with the matchups. But hey, that's all a part of the random factor of the Swiss system. And on the other side of the coin, FaZe and Mous are playing for 0-2.

exactly, faze and mous have had to play against much harder teams while c9 and winstrike both perform pretty bad, yet c9 get an autoqual off a free win, which they even nearly messed up still plus astralis will have to play much greater teams to get a 3 - 0 than col did. the seeding and system needs to be greatly improved for next major, we cant keep handing out free qualifications on 6 month old results and seeding teams based off a bo1 and ignoring any recent performances and consistency.

I do agree that nowadays BIG is a decent team, but they weren't back then when they went 3-0, QBF also not "worthy" of a Legend status due to teams playing bad, not because they played super well. The thing is BO1s are proven to be way too random and unpredictable to be used to define teams that stay in group stages and that goes through to the playoffs. Maybe in other (e)Sports they aren't, but at least in CS they are.

Yeah totally that BIG 100% fluked the playoff I just wanted to say coL is a bit better than QBF. Yeah I agree it's random. I would like a classic system like in football, 4 groups of 4 (seeded ofc), round robin bo3, top 2 in group advance to playoff. Then quarterfinals and so on also bo3. People would complain about simultaneous matches then but I don't care that much, since I watch maybe 1 full game per day. And it would eliminate randomness by a lot.

The Round Robin BO3s are great, and deciding the groups with seeding would most probably avoid the group of death problem. Furthermore I think the best format in eSports I have seen is the one used in Dota2's The International. I don't care if it takes a week for teams to be placed in the brackets or that we have more than one game at the same time since we have 0 randomness and that the best teams are placed in the upper bracket and the worse in the lower.

Their tenacity to persevere through several losses and roster changes shows that they're in it for the long haul.
