device: "Looking forward to getting some time off"

We interviewed Nicolai "device" Reedtz following his MVP-worthy performance at BLAST Pro Series Istanbul to analyze the grand final.

The 23-year-old Danish superstar earned his ninth Most Valuable Player (MVP) award by HLTV.org and betway as he put in a 1.48 rating to power Astralis to beat MIBR 2-1 in the final, finishing the tournament with a 1.39 rating.

device won his second MVP medal in the space of one week

Right after the title decider, we caught up with device to ask him about their preparation for BLAST and their comfortable group stage. We also analyzed all of the grand final maps to understand how Astralis came out on top of the match.

You didn't have much time to prepare for BLAST Pro Series Istanbul following your victory at the FACEIT Major. How did you decide to approach this situation?

After the Major, we decided not to practice at all for this tournament. I'm currently in the mess of moving to a new place, so I had to take care of that, and everyone just wanted to have some time off. But right after we arrived in Istanbul, we practised a little bit. Going into this event, we were going to build on the momentum that we found at the Major.

To kick off the group stage you played three games on Inferno and you gave away a total of 16 rounds. After that NiP, pushed you a little bit on Nuke, but you kept the undefeated streak going. What are your thoughts on your group stage performance?

We viewed MIBR and NiP as our two toughest opponents here. So we had our three relatively easier matches in the beginning. Because those first three games were on Inferno, they were really easy to prepare for because on that map we play our own way and don't adjust too much depending on the opponents. They were all comfortable wins because of that.

NiP and MIBR put up a better fight. We knew NiP were strong on Nuke, but we never really felt like we were losing it even if they had the lead. We took three ecos after losing the pistol, which is unusual for us, but we wanted to build a really strong economy for the perfect buy. They didn't get a single round after that. I think we are on a 20-0 streak on Nuke, so we are really happy. The MIBR game was a little bit of a show match because we knew we were going to face them in the final.

You personally got off to a great start on Train, the first map in the grand final. At one point, you had 20 kills and two deaths. How did it feel to get it clicking like that and winning the first map?

I had a really good pistol round because I had a read on what they were going to do. They rushed B and I pushed through lower while they were getting into the site. Thanks to that I think I got a quad kill. I got another quad kill again in the next round when they had a full eco. I was like “Oh yeah, I'm fired up now.”

The next round I got a quad kill again, like… (laughs) It's always nice to have one of those games. It happens more in practice than official games. I'm really proud of the performance my team and I put in there. We had a good read on them. It was crazy to play.

MIBR hit back on Overpass as you only got four rounds on the CT side. What made you let your 10-5 lead slip away?

It was a terrible CT-side for us. Starting off on the T-side, we reset them after losing the pistol. After that it was a little bit of a massacre, so to say. We got some quick rounds with good calls from gla1ve.

They managed to come back because of the momentum and confidence they gained as the match went on. Stewie just ran into the B-site and killed four guys in the second pistol. Also in one of the most important rounds, he jumped onto Water and made a triple spray.

He had a lot of impact for MIBR on the T-side. They knew how they wanted to play, had some good reads and executed perfectly. So, kudos to them, they had an amazing game.

You lost the pistol round to start off the decider, Inferno, but took back control with a force buy. There were some close rounds towards the end, but you managed to close it out on the A-site. How did you finish it off and take the win?

We knew after losing the first pistol that it could pay off playing very slowly with smokes and I had a very good round on B to seal that force-buy win. They managed to play the game according to their pace, so that's why they got so many rounds on the T-side. I think we had a 6-1 lead but they took over the pace. We also made some mistakes there.

The T side has always been strong for us. We just wanted to grind out some rounds. In the beginning, we were hitting B pretty hard and could have won some more rounds in that period. And then we focused more on the A-site and gla1ve made a call in the final round that we should do a fast A play. We got a great afterplant and secured the win.

How does it feel to finally be able to go home after being on the road for more than a month?

It's amazing. I miss my girlfriend, obviously. I miss having a normal life routine. It's especially tough when you have stomach issues that are stress-related. I'm just going to chill, enjoy life and obviously enjoy all the wins we have been getting. Looking forward to getting some time off.

Lmao, s1mple clearly can't perform under extreme pressure. Look for example at the major final where he was one of NaVi's bottom fraggers.

I was not aware that FaZe, Mouz and other teams such as Liquid and MiBR for instance are lower tier teams.

What do you consider a highlight?
2018-10-01 07:21
Acually FaZe isn't but Liquid defeated Na'Vi at ELEAGUE Premier 2018 on Overpass when TACO in 2v5 pulled out spray transfer but s1mple has hell damn enough time to react (In cs reality)

You must be braindead to think one bad final after carrying several means he cant perform. Same happened to device btw, even in wins.

I doubt Device can be #1 this year. S1mple is forced to drop 30 bombs every game and boost his rating , while device is playing for the team and they all perform well so he's unable to drop 30+ kills every game , because all of them are on point

Well if you fell for trashcans only its understandable. But do not put all the girls under common flags. Give attention to those that dont need 2kgs of makeup to look "pretty"
2018-09-30 12:35
"crazy right" is usually used for sarcasm purposes, because its obviously not crazy, since more people want love than sex. Its just that #36 seems like that kind of guy who only cares for sex and cant understand that people are different.

They dont even have a proper practice at all for this tour. Yet mibr fanskeep saying this is better final than major. And happy with 2-1 loss. What a joke.

Even Astralis said in the post match interviews that it was a crazy match and that they havent played games this close in a while. Why would they have proper practise, when the two ”top teams” at the tournament were already ata the Major and Astralis-level team can win against those lower tier teams with their eyes closed.

What made MIBR to lose the last map was all those force buy rounds that they lost. Almost every force buy, Astralis made they way to win the round. MIBR should really work on that.
