ESL abolishes Minor invites; announces dates for qualifiers

ESL has revealed that it will not be issuing invites to teams to compete at the Minors leading to the IEM Katowice Major.

In a statement, ESL explained that it wants to make the format of the Minors "completely inclusive", with all teams required to qualify online.

When compared to the qualifying process for the FACEIT Major, the Asia Minor is the only one affected by this decision as none of the other three regional tournaments had invite slots.

Winstrike and MOUZ, the bottom two sides of the FACEIT Major London's New Legends Stage, will be invited to the closed qualifiers for the CIS and the Europe Minors, respectively.

mousesports will need to qualify for the Europe Minor online

In all regional closed qualifiers, the spot will be split equally between invites and open qualifier places. The official rulebook of the qualifiers will be released by ESL next week along with the registration links for each tournament.

Below you can find the schedule for the online qualifiers for the Minors:

How are they going to say they got rid of invites and yet still have a closed qualifier invite for everyone still. All they mean is Asian won't have invites which is fine except for the fact that they don't have a 16 team —> closed qualifier like everyone else does. Grow the scene in that area my ass.
2018-10-09 19:30
1 reply
they only said they got rid of minor invites, not all invites. the south american closed qualifier only has 8 teams, that makes 24 teams total for the americas region. the asia/oce region has 40 teams in 5 closed qualifiers. and you should know very well that the reason for that is the sheer size of that region, you can't have middle eastern teams play against nz teams in the same qualifier. and valve is growing that region by constantly giving them 2 spots in the new challenger stage. if they folded that region into any other, they'd have no chances of making it to the major.

yeah, but this will also enable cheaters to take spots from teams that actually do something on lan
2018-10-09 18:37

Meh, cheaters will be in the open qualifiers. The closed qualifier will still have invites so mousesports won’t have to play against some team of cheaters to get into the closed qualifier.

Now it’s gonna be stupid because Renegades will go to the Oceania closed qualifier and take one of the Oceania spots if they’re good enough. It’s so stupid that they don’t have a closed qualifier for the Asian region.
