mousesports eliminate BIG; Luminosity send eUnited packing in Chicago

In two best-of-threes ending with 2-0 scores, mousesports and Luminosity saw off BIG and eUnited, respectively, to secure their spots in the Group B lower bracket final of IEM Chicago 2018.

The European clash between BIG and mousesports saw Fatih "gob b" Dayik's men come out on top in the first pistol round with a fast hit on Dust2's B-site. The Germans also won the next round, but, because of the new economy system, mousesports had enough money to buy up and get themselves on the board. Chris "chrisJ" de Jong and co. then tied up the map and started stringing together rounds to eventually lead 5-2.

BIG got more creative on the offence and hit both bomb sites at will to win three in a row and tie up the game once more. The rest of the half turned into a brawl, as the two teams traded rounds to end up at the smallest possible round difference at halftime: 8-7 in favour of gob b's troops.

chrisJ bagged 30 kills in map one versus BIG

Now on the attacking side, mousesports won the second pistol round cleanly to tie up the game at 8-8. The two teams then traded rounds for a while, before chrisJ's men pulled ahead on the back of impressive AUG/SG 553-play from the Dutch captain. The 28-year-old would reach 30 kills on Dust2, as mousesports only conceded one more round, winning the map 16-10 and taking the series lead.

Action then moved to mousesports' pick, Train, where the European mix won the first pistol round on the back of a triple-kill by Miikka "suNny" Kemppi. They also secured the following anti-eco, but BIG would put themselves on the board in the third round as Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz took down four. Robin "ropz" Kool and co. won the next, but BIG managed to bring them down in the fifth with only pistols.

The Germans started looking solid on the defensive side, as they won the next four rounds to take a 6-3 lead, but mousesports then took three in a row to tie up the half 6-6. chrisJ's men would go on to take the lead before the half, as they won two out of the remaining three rounds.

BIG tied up the match once again by winning the second pistol round and also won the next, but mousesports fired back once they had guns, first by evening out the score and then taking the lead again on the back of a quad-kill by Tomáš "oskar" Šťastný. The Czech and his compatriots made it to thirteen before BIG defended a bomb plant on B to reach double digits. Ten rounds would be all she wrote for the Germans, though, as mousesports won three in a row to close out Train 16-10 and the series 2-0.

In the second group B lower bracket semi, Henrique "HEN1" Teles took down three in the first pistol round as CT to help Luminosity win it on eUnited’s map pick, Mirage. The Brazilians also picked up the next round, but their North American opponents put themselves on the board with guns in the third, and evened out the score in the fourth.

What followed was a long period of trading rounds until Lucas "steel" Lopes’s men reset eUnited’s economy to take the lead 7-4. Pujan "FNS" Mehta’s troops then rallied back to win three out of the remaining five rounds and bring their deficit to one before the half was over.

The second pistol round was a nail-biter, as FNS and HEN1 found themselves in a 1v1 post-plant situation on A, with the former narrowly nailing the defuse before he was brought down, bringing the match to an 8-8 scoreline. The two sides traded the next pair of rounds until Luminosity found their footing as Terrorists and pulled ahead, eventually shutting down eUnited completely and winning Mirage 16-10 to take the lead in the series.

steel and his men had no trouble taking down eUnited

Moving on to Luminosity’s map pick Train, Kaleb "moose" Jayne took down four Brazilians to secure the first pistol round for his team on the CT-side. eUnited also won the follow-up, but lost the next as Luminosity had cash to buy up. steel and co. continued stringing together rounds, picking apart their North American opposition until they reached a 8-2 lead. eUnited then rallied back somewhat as they made it to a 5-9 deficit before Luminosity won the final round in the first half to reach double digits.

Now on the CT-side, the Brazilians continued their good form by winning the second pistol along with the following anti-eco round. But with guns in their hands, FNS’ men put themselves on the board and started clawing their way back in the match, eventually reaching nine rounds. But that would be it for the North American side as Luminosity won the remaining rounds of the map to win it 16-9 and the series 2-0.
