Vitality outclass Luminosity to win DreamHack Atlanta

MIRAA
November 19th, 2018 01:51

Vitality have won the 2018 edition of DreamHack Open Atlanta following a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Luminosity.

After encountering a few bumps along the road Vitality put on a masterclass to claim their first title. It was the sort of display that the team needed, after a slow start to the tournament, and this time around they did not even require a carry performance by Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut, who still showed his individual brilliance with a stunning ace on Overpass.

Luminosity tried to make the most of their Mirage pick - a map Vitality had not yet played in Atlanta -, but they soon came to regret that choice as the French side always appeared a class above. Gustavo "yeL" Knittel's men found themselves on the back foot early on, getting on the scoreboard for the first time only seven rounds into the game.

The Brazilian side struggled to break through Vitality's double AWP set up with a slow approach, so they upped the pace in an effort to open up the map. That strategy worked for a while and Luminosity brought the scoreline to 4-7, but the Europeans were not willing to let a comeback happen and won the remaining rounds of the half.

Vincent "Happy" Schopenhauer went huge in the second half pistol with a 1v2 clutch to kick Vitality further into the lead. Luminosity still sought a response, but the French team refused to ease off the gas and locked down the map at 16-4.

Vitality win their first title after a one-sided final

Henrique "HEN1" Teles opened up the action on Overpass with a trio of USP kills in the canal to put Luminosity in the lead for the first time in the series. Vitality responded in the third round and took the reins of the game after that, shutting down any chances of the Brazilians stringing rounds together.

Down 4-11, Luminosity kept themselves in the game by winning the second half pistol convincingly, but then they were dealt a heavy blow as ZywOo pulled off an ace after picking up an AK.

The Brazilians were now clearly in disarray, their next round win being once again traded back immediately by a Vitality side on eco, this time off the back of a great play by Dan "apEX" Madesclaire. The 25-year-old's trio of kills, two of them in a 1v2 situation, put his team on championship point and left Luminosity with no money in the bank to prevent the Frenchmen from running away with the game.

I disagree, he shines as a playmaker not a turret. With late nV he was constantly just holding angles and shit, he's not device he should be making plays that only KennyS can attempt.

he can do both. But kenny was at his best when he was making plays.
2018-11-28 05:24
Absolutely but I do think it's complicated for KennyS nowadays because it's become almost impossible to make actual solo plays, you always need some sort of support which means one or two teammates have to be dedicated to KennyS making one single play. That didn't seem like the direction they wanted to take under Ex6's lead, they seemed to be trying treat every player equally which to this day I still don't understand.
2018-11-29 19:31

2018-11-19 11:40
The good old days of KennyS and GuardiaN hard carrying with just an AWP. I remember Na'Vi would often drop an AWP to GuardiaN with the rest on pistols. They just accepted that 5 of them forcing wouldn't be as efficient as GuardiaN alone with an AWP.

I think something that has been building up the last 6 months is a big Brazilian shuffle. I think with teams like INTZ and LG starting to perform a lot better recently even with some obvious pieces missing on each team and MiBR underperforming, there is going to be a big mix up soon and hopefully we can see BR CS like it was in mid 2017 with SK, immortals, and LG all performing. That would be amazing but I think that Tarik and Stew need to get kicked before anything will ever happen I’m Brazil

Although RPK doesn’t necessarily put up crazy numbers, and I think Kio is a really good player, I think this team needs a player like RPK who just does some grimy things that someone else like KIO wouldn’t do and be fine with no spotlight as long as the team wins. Apex said in an interview that he thinks this is the first time French teams (Vitality and LDLC) have been able to find a good mix of players who all have the same goals in mind and French CS is as healthy as it has been in a long time

+1 Even if RPK does not kill much, he does the plays that matters the most (like tanking on site while alone). If only people would understand that kicking players isn't the solution... (= more drama)

The only team that needs to be kicking someone is G2. It’s easy to tell that the mindset of the team is not good and young blood can do wonders for these older players to find more energy to keep grinding. Look at Vitality, every single player is insanely great fun for Zywoo and having anew blood enter the French top tier can only improve things. I would love to see some 3DMax players with a lot of potential get a chance on G2. And I would also love to see players like Smithzz and Shox and Ex6tenz still all like each other because they all realize it’s for the better of France if they let go. The mindset in France is the main thing that needs a change and I’m excited for the future
2018-11-19 02:20
They already got a chande, 3dmax tomorrow playing with two new guys, so its pretty much confirmed, that g2 is getting jackz and lucky.

I think Kio is really what Vitality needs - skilled, calm, experienced support player. About Apex words, they was saying same shit about G2 Superteam squad, just a words :) The main change is Zywoo. Finally i can cheer for some good french team with a superstar in lineup.

G2 at cs summit were already done it seemed. Esl One Cologne G2 still beats this col and Vitality. Though that Vitality will improve further and will be better probably soon. People have been underatting g2 a ton since they failed at cs summit so bad, but earlier at New York and at Cologne they werent half bad.
2018-11-19 08:56
> Esl One Cologne G2 still beats this col and Vitality bo1 against Na`Vi - we all know Na`Vi can easily lose to eUnited, so not really an achievement. bo3 against mouz - the very first event at all for them with Snax that made no sense role-wise, mouz then lost to ENCE, not an achievement at all. So it wasn't cool even on paper for anybody that knew more than just the teams' names. Dude I know shox and kennyS never turned on in the same match, and I know SmithZz is not a T1 material, but it shouldn't be that much of a problem for a good IGL against teams like Luminosity, BIG, compLexity, NRG. Thus people just desperately are searching for excuses for Ex6TenZ, as if there were no similar fails in 2014-2016. I did want Ex6 to succeed but he just isn't good enough for a T1 team as a caller, believe me - new G2 will have no major problems against teams like compLexity. And I bet Vitality in ~3 months will be ~top6.

The thing you mentioned about G2's performance at Cologne are still better than what Vitality have shown so far, though as i mentioned Vitality will improve further while g2 started spiraling down after Cologne, probably due to Ocelote's pressure after the major. Kenny was one of the main reasons for G2's fail as well. Much more was expected from him and he was the one setup for impact the most while he performed awfully mediocre, he had the worst period in his career. Ex6 was never really the only mid round caller and never excelled at it, in teams with Shox it was moslty him making the mid round decisions, Ex6 made calls based on spawn and would be much more valuable as the coach for example. This team didnt really play out as a Ex6 team tho, Shox had to have had a lot of influence in this squad knowing how he always wants to be the one pulling the strings after all. One more thing to mention is Ex6's individual performance which was better than that of bodyy's for example. even as a non igl he is more valuable to the squad than bodyy as a role player and a hardworking personality which would help with the team's strats. But oh well seems like the deal is done and ex6 is definitely getting replaced, he was performing better before he was kicked in the 2016 g2 as well. clips.twitch.tv/SleepyDepressedOkapiOSsl.. The interesting thing about this g2 shuffle is Apex saying on a interview after their win at DH that there are rumors about G2 taking 3dmax players instead of 2 as nel and hltv reported. It could obviously just be a mistake by apex but still, If it was only Lucky and jackz then Shox would go on to igl again which definitely would do more harm than good. Maybe they are considering davidp, the 3dmax igl?
2018-11-19 13:45
> G2's performance at Cologne are still better than what Vitality have shown so far You're hyping something that was either fluke (vs Na`Vi) or irrelevant (bad mousesports), while underrating what Vitality shows so far. Once G2 met a more or less solid team (BIG) - they got fucked. > g2 started spiraling down after Cologne You think it was a pretty good performance only because that one map against Astralis, but close matches like that happen from time to time and they may mean something only if a team that pushed a T1 opponent to the limit then proved themselves, G2 did prove nothing. > due to Ocelote's pressure after the major I do remember G2 losing to Luminosity after Cologne, don't focus on irrelevant things, and yes there was pressure but only because G2 never showed anything they should've showed, Ocelote got rid of apEX and NBK just to let shox destroy his team, of course he then demanded certain results from them which they failed to achieve. They got exactly what they deserved. > Kenny was one of the main reasons for G2's fail as well You don't need top performance from kennyS to defeat fucking NRG & compLexity, he did not suck and they had shox and if their IGL is T1 then it should be more than enough against NRG & compLexity. An IGL that has only 1 plan - "kennyS go kill" - should not lead a team that wants to be T1. > Ex6 was never really the only mid round caller That's correct for like 3 years, but take into account that kicking him improved G2 in 2016, leaving him in 2014-2015 allowed NBK, shox, kennyS and apEX to win a major, you can blame it on shox but you will see an improvement in results after G2 plays for a couple of months with JaCKz and Lucky, they will still be no T1 team but they will definitely be better against NRG/coL-level teams. > This team didnt really play out as a Ex6 team tho On the one hand you agree that midround calls wasn't Ex6TenZ' responsibility, on the other hand you still expect it to play the vintage 2012-2014 VG/Titan style which has been long gone. There's no such thing as "strictly tactical Ex6TenZ style", it's him + either Maniac or shox, and you will be right only if new G2 won't be better than its current version in 3 months, which you will not, because however illogical shox may SOUND about tactics - he achieved more valuable results in 2016-2017 than Ex6TenZ in 2014-2018, shox' success is much more recent than Ex6TenZ'. > Maybe they are considering davidp With Davidp they will be just as lame as they were with Ex6TenZ and SmithZz.

Youre being too harsh on g2's early decent results and are calling them flukes, but watching the games if you werent biased against them you would see that they really were at the same page as a team and were playing well for a young team, they were looking to improve and at the major they were expected to get to playoffs but as they lost 2-3 everything started going down. Well Kenny is expected to be the hard carry and i repeat he is the one that is setup the most. He had a 0.92 rating at the tier 3 cs summit, if smithzz was in his role he'd do better tbh. While Kenny was showing the expected level, earlier in G2 up to Cologne they were showing promise for a young team and were looking to build and improve, but Kenny turned to shit, the results didnt improve Ocelote pressured and it all fell apart. And when i say it didnt play out like a Ex6 team at all im not talking about the mid round calling. A lot of the things that Ex6 implemented in his team as a igl werent there. His early round calls, execs, structure and setups. It all looked like a failed experimental mashup of shox and ex6 which obviously didnt work. About Shox leading- first off lets point something out, he wasnt successfull as a igl in 2017, a lineup of such firepower and French talent underachieved, we both know that that lineup could of done much more, and the reason for the lineups downfall was the leader and structure issue. When shox did micro manage they won Dh malmo but he is inconsistent in motivation and has a pretty low work ethic and really isnt made for a igl. 2016 is a different story, he was getting midcalling from Smithzz and Scream and he also knew RPK really well, so only 1 player was unknown for him to implement, bodyy. He mentioned in interviews that the reason he couldnt lead and be as good individually in the 2017 g2 is because he doesnt know the tendecies of apex, kenny and nbk that well and had to micro manage them. I hope that Lucky will lead with Shox in this team. If Shox leads like in 2017 it will be much worse as there really isnt a proven fragger except Kenny to step up ( who is in a slump ) they will stil be better than this G2 though, but i dont think Ocelote will be happy with that either. For the new G2 to suceed Shox definitely needs to frag heavily. He should have full freedom as it was in 2016, Lucky can help with leading. What they kinda miss in this team is that experienced analytical person, Malek doesnt really do the job and Ex6 or krl could help as a analyst/ coach maybe
2018-11-19 16:31
> Youre being too harsh on g2's early decent results and are calling them flukes What's any decent in defeating Na`Vi in bo1? You can name several weak teams that took maps from Na`Vi, recently it was eUnited, it in itself proves nothing except if G2 had kept it up which they hadn't. mouz got fucked by ENCE after their match vs G2. G2 did what their opponents let them to, and once they had BIG or Luminosity or NRG or compLexity - they got fucked in the ass. Put it together and think again. > Well Kenny is expected to be the hard carry You don't need a hard carry to defeat teams like those whom G2 hopelessly lost to. You may blame it on kennyS against T1 teams, because yes you need top performance from your best players to defeat them, but against those lower-tier teams you don't need it, unless your IGL sucks so much that he can only rely on carriers to defeat fucking Luminosity, NRG, compLexity. > we both know that that lineup could of done much more You look at G2 with Ex6TenZ and SmithZz and... the irony, you know ;-D > Malek doesnt really do the job How do you know that? They hired him and then they are kicking Ex6TenZ, they're inside and they know who does what. If Ex6TenZ was so valuable, if his shit worked - nobody would kick him. Not only he didn't achieve more that he could on paper with SmithZz, he also underachieved with shox and kennyS. Give new G2 3 months and they will definitely defeat the weaker teams that Ex6TenZ could never defeat this year.
