Happy: "[Winning DH Atlanta] will give us a chance to prove that we belong at the top"

HLTV.org caught up with a cheerful Vincent "Happy" Schopenhauer after his new squad outclassed Luminosity across two maps in the grand final at DreamHack Open Atlanta.

Vitality debuted their new roster with fashion in Atlanta, defeating the Brazilians of Luminosity 2-0 in the final, winning their first offline event since forming the team in early October.

Vitality took a much needed win in Atlanta

After the team's victory, we sat down with Happy to talk about Vitality's morale heading into their LAN debut, their journey leading up to the grand final, and what to expect from the Frenchmen after their satisfying win.

First things first, congratulations on the win! This is the team’s first LAN debut since getting this roster together. What was the team's morale like competing offline once again?

I think everyone was pretty excited to finally play on LAN. I think NBK and apEX have been away from the offline circuit for a little while and so was I. Yeah, so, I think we all feel like it's really different than online CS where we all enjoy playing in the LAN environment, so everyone was just really excited. I was curious about how things were going to go.

Your journey reaching the grand final started off a little rough after the opening loss to Ghost. What were some of the adjustments made that allowed your team to sweep the next two series to reach the final?

Once we lost against Ghost, we had a pretty deep talk with each other that lasted around two hours or so and we came to the conclusion that the comms were off. We are the kind of team that needs repetition and feeling hot in the communication department. So, we told each other, 'alright let's give everything we got, talk all the time, always tell your teammates what you are going to do or what angle you're holding'. I guess it helped? Also, I personally think that the first match could end up badly for us because it was the first time playing in the LAN environment with this team.

I wasn't worried because I know the results in practice are pretty consistent, but we know that we have to find a way to unlock the potential that we have previously gathered at a boot camp and such. Yeah, so it was all about trying to get everyone in the right direction and have the same goal symbolically, and I think we all reached that after losing to Ghost.

Let’s dive into the final. Luminosity in recent months have been looking for their stride again, but they seemed to have made progress with that here. Did you already have an idea about your opponent going into the final or not really?

Luminosity is not a team that I'm used to watching a lot because I think they can be really inconsistent. I mean, during their game against Ghost on the third map Inferno, I thought that they were going to lose, but they were playing bad and losing rounds because...well (laughs) there was never any time left! But yeah, they do have this inner fire within them, for example, like clutch situations or a really well strat execution. So, yeah, I didn't really watch too much of Luminosity before, but I think we were prepared.

The series seemed pretty one-sided. What was clicking so well for you guys to quickly wrap up this series?

I think it was the fact that we just won a best-of-three prior to the final. You know, we were able to play well and everyone was happy to play, everyone was willing to give their best, and it just carried on into the final. We all told each other that the next step is to play like warriors, and I think we did just that.

Right on. With this win under your belts as a new team. What will the team do coming off the win here in Atlanta moving forward?

I think it was really important for us to win this tournament because we have trouble getting invites to tournaments, even in closed qualifiers sometimes we get denied. So, now we have to go through the cutthroat open qualifiers every time. As I said on Twitter after we won this event, online has been rough on us the past couple of weeks, so you know, maybe it's a start and would give us a chance to prove that we belong at the top. It's all about grinding, the next step is obviously the closed qualifier for the European Minor, and it's going to be really rough because it's going to be a cutthroat qualifier. We will give it our best.

One more thing before we wrap this up. Do you want to give any shout outs to anyone?

I want to give a special shoutout to ZywOo because he's been playing amazing throughout this tournament. Like, he is hands down the MVP from me. I want to give a shoutout to the players when we all stepped up when it matters the most and finally, shout out to Vitality, they are some great guys.

Actually not. Seeing Vitality succeed is one of my dreams. 5 french all stars going in and zywoo popping off like that at LAN? fuck yes. I want them in the Major.
2018-11-19 09:33
+1 Shox may be crying now because he didn't invited zywoo to his team
2018-11-19 10:18
I feel bad so sorry for Kenny. Imagine having to play woth Smithzz and Bodyy on a daily basis and, to make it even worse, having to watch another team doing well... Shox is such a crybaby, I'm tired of him making problems about his little friend incompetent friends
2018-11-19 10:39
Bodyy is a support, dont know why ppl treat him so badly, he may be a toxic person, but -smithzz or -ex6tenz would be 100% the best roster change for them
2018-11-19 10:54
All 3 should be removed, but if I had to keep it would be ex6, at least he IGL's and puts up the same numbers as Bodyy

Hadji and sixer playing for jackz and Lucky in online matches makes it pretty obvious to me.
2018-11-20 18:06
Yeah its not "official" but thats the norm, org's do it just because they can - when they have already signed new player(s) and the outgoing player is negotiated in sale or benched or whatever ? NAH ? THAT'S BS ! F U WHY SPREAD THAT RUMOR POOR US ! DON'T LIE JUST CONTACT US BEFORE YOU PUBLISH THIS FAKE NEWS !!! Then the rumor becomes known to be a fact.. and old news..

It kinda falls off when the last major you managed to win was in 2015, eh? And have been losing to upstarts since 2016 even. I am just saying put a sock in it, they have much more to prove before they can cement themselves at tier 1 again. There wasn’t anything humble about this. 26 years old, definitely not a kid. And you don’t need to be where others are to dish out critique. With that logic, all politicians are Gods, and we shouldn’t shittalk the way for example Trump runs the US, because we aren’t presidents. TL;DR: Your logic is flawed.

2018-11-19 12:51
Yeah, the future is uncertain lol the point is winning means get invites means get chance and see what happens. Not winning means stuck beating nobodies.. no matter how efficiently and spectacularly you demolish shitters, noone is going to give you any credit. You need to get to tier 1 international LANs and show consistency/improvement. Good for them, though it still sucks we don't get to see shox in this lineup. Why even bother playing anymore mr shox, seriously bro :( back to IGL ? WTF is that shit :( is he really just not recognizing how average he played last time he was IGL. Why cant we just have nice things
2018-11-20 21:06
No ZywOo no team
2018-11-19 09:44
No s1mple no navi, back in the days no cold no sk (at least no majors), no niko no faze... Lot of teams carried by one player, so what?
2018-11-19 10:13
Sk and faze weren't carried all the time back in the day, faze had guardian Niko and olof while sk had fer fallen and cold (felps, fnx and boltz were fragging supports as well but inconsistent)

where is topteam imperial? the top-10 play of ence? top-5 ghost??? it's the next top team?
2018-11-19 11:47
ENCE is fairly close to top 10 (14th unless they drop this week). If they get to minors + some other event it's possible they will be ranked there. Ghost are delusional. They will reach top10-15 imo as they are also limited by majors and the numbers of players that would be willing to join them. Imperial goal was top 20 initially which they reached and then started making roster changes and disbanded. Now Valiance goal top 16 which will see if holds up in a few months.
2018-11-19 14:37

RPK was in top form (his best in CSGO) before he got pneumonia.. and couldn't even get his breath properly at whatever LAN that was lol.. obviously he went to shit since but he's coming back strong and no reason to doubt him. To be trying so hard when basically not far from emergency room, if not ICU.. daamn that says a lot about his dedication to his job. Happy needs to be supportive and impactful and not bait his whole team, and he won't be THE PROBLEM. I haven't watched for shit yet but maybe someone will fill me in on how he is doing and if there is a real change in his playstyle/mentality yet ? Really wish shox was in not Happy lol. But maybe he will surprise me and evolve. Like every player his #1 priority has to be to best serve the team. The old 4+Happy approach could even be thrown in now and then to throw off opponents. Do it once or twice per game, tops. Surely they have him supporting.. please yes.. The rest are gold. Does anyone think the other 3 are anything less than a star core ? doubt it
2018-11-20 21:44
You could put 3 simples on a team with happy and rpk and it would still not be a top team. Any team with happy on the lineup is instantly limited. Kio and scream were avalible but they went for happy and rpk haha
2018-11-20 23:06
Yeah no complaints about rpk if he shows his true form but Happy is a joke at this point, kio is far better choice. ScreaM is debatable it would depend on the team system and roles, maybe he could thrive in this team you never know for sure even if you're the coach you can't predict how the team structure will help or hinder a few of the players. Pretty much who cares what your plans are with ZywOo put him anywhere you're set for that zone lol :)
