Happy: "[Winning DH Atlanta] will give us a chance to prove that we belong at the top"
After the team's victory, we sat down with Happy to talk about Vitality's morale heading into their LAN debut, their journey leading up to the grand final, and what to expect from the Frenchmen after their satisfying win.
First things first, congratulations on the win! This is the team’s first LAN debut since getting this roster together. What was the team's morale like competing offline once again?
I think everyone was pretty excited to finally play on LAN. I think NBK and apEX have been away from the offline circuit for a little while and so was I. Yeah, so, I think we all feel like it's really different than online CS where we all enjoy playing in the LAN environment, so everyone was just really excited. I was curious about how things were going to go.
Your journey reaching the grand final started off a little rough after the opening loss to Ghost. What were some of the adjustments made that allowed your team to sweep the next two series to reach the final?
Once we lost against Ghost, we had a pretty deep talk with each other that lasted around two hours or so and we came to the conclusion that the comms were off. We are the kind of team that needs repetition and feeling hot in the communication department. So, we told each other, 'alright let's give everything we got, talk all the time, always tell your teammates what you are going to do or what angle you're holding'. I guess it helped? Also, I personally think that the first match could end up badly for us because it was the first time playing in the LAN environment with this team.
I wasn't worried because I know the results in practice are pretty consistent, but we know that we have to find a way to unlock the potential that we have previously gathered at a boot camp and such. Yeah, so it was all about trying to get everyone in the right direction and have the same goal symbolically, and I think we all reached that after losing to Ghost.
Let’s dive into the final. Luminosity in recent months have been looking for their stride again, but they seemed to have made progress with that here. Did you already have an idea about your opponent going into the final or not really?
Luminosity is not a team that I'm used to watching a lot because I think they can be really inconsistent. I mean, during their game against Ghost on the third map Inferno, I thought that they were going to lose, but they were playing bad and losing rounds because...well (laughs) there was never any time left! But yeah, they do have this inner fire within them, for example, like clutch situations or a really well strat execution. So, yeah, I didn't really watch too much of Luminosity before, but I think we were prepared.
The series seemed pretty one-sided. What was clicking so well for you guys to quickly wrap up this series?
I think it was the fact that we just won a best-of-three prior to the final. You know, we were able to play well and everyone was happy to play, everyone was willing to give their best, and it just carried on into the final. We all told each other that the next step is to play like warriors, and I think we did just that.
Right on. With this win under your belts as a new team. What will the team do coming off the win here in Atlanta moving forward?
I think it was really important for us to win this tournament because we have trouble getting invites to tournaments, even in closed qualifiers sometimes we get denied. So, now we have to go through the cutthroat open qualifiers every time. As I said on Twitter after we won this event, online has been rough on us the past couple of weeks, so you know, maybe it's a start and would give us a chance to prove that we belong at the top. It's all about grinding, the next step is obviously the closed qualifier for the European Minor, and it's going to be really rough because it's going to be a cutthroat qualifier. We will give it our best.
One more thing before we wrap this up. Do you want to give any shout outs to anyone?
I want to give a special shoutout to ZywOo because he's been playing amazing throughout this tournament. Like, he is hands down the MVP from me. I want to give a shoutout to the players when we all stepped up when it matters the most and finally, shout out to Vitality, they are some great guys.
