Liquid take down MIBR to reach IEM Sydney final
The opening map of this Americas classic, Mirage, started with MIBR hopping out to a 3-0 lead on the offensive side. Once Liquid had money to work with, though, the landscape of the game changed immediately, and it was only a matter of time before they took the lead, off the back of a stunning ace by Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski with the AUG.
The Brazilians struggled to break through the Liquid defense and to find those clutches that had been so decisive the day before against mousesports, but a late resurgence allowed them to make this a competitive 6-9 half.
Now playing on the CT side, MIBR took the pistol round, but there was no follow-up as they were caught off-guard by Liquid's pistols. The North Americans rode that momentum to a 15-7 lead, and even though the Brazilians still made a slight climb back into the map, they were too far behind to be able to alter the course of the game.
Next up was Nuke, a shaky map by MIBR as evidenced by the disparity in their results on it earlier in the tournament (16-4 victory over fnatic and a defeat by the same scoreline against NRG). It was thus no surprise that a confident EliGE admitted in the pre-game interview that he already saw Liquid in the final.
The North American team got off to a dream start as they raced to a 5-0 lead on the Terrorist side, leaving MIBR's players shell-shocked. The Brazilians kept their composure, though, and set up a tight and compact defence for the remainder of the half, with Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo leading the way with 16 frags.
Up 9-6, MIBR carried their momentum into the second half and took the pistol round in convincing fashion, with Marcelo "coldzera" David then preventing the reset with a miraculous 1v2 clutch on the lower site.
After getting their economy back on track, Liquid went on a dominant run, winning nine of the following ten rounds to reach match point at 15-13, before MIBR fought back to force overtime. The Brazilians' efforts would be in vain, though, as Liquid ran riot after regulation and won four rounds without response.
