DreamHack announces all-women Showdown tournament with $100,000 prize pool

DreamHack has announced that it will host a female Counter-Strike tournament as part of the upcoming Valencia event with $100,000 on offer.

DreamHack Showdown will be held from July 5-7 and will represent the "first large-scale collaboration" between the Swedish company, ZOWIE and Esport-Management aimed to "elevate ambitious women CS:GO players in the global esports scene and provide a dedicated platform to support their professional growth."

DreamHack will host an all-women competition in July

The tournament will have eight slots, two of which will be filled through invites. Esport-Management will run the European and North American online qualifiers on June 8-9, while ZOWIE will host the Asian qualifiers, which will culminate with a LAN stage in Shanghai from June 20-23.

"Inclusivity at our events is a huge part of DreamHack - we aim to be the esports and gaming festival where all groups feel welcome”, said DreamHack AB Co-CEO Marcus Lindmark.

“DreamHack Showdown is a step to help create inspirational moments for aspiring female esports competitors worldwide."

Teams can sign up for the regional qualifiers by heading over to the official DreamHack Showdown website.

Perhaps they will reward differently than normal tournaments reaching more teams, making it worth. It could make female cs get involved in events stuff in the future, bringing more girls to the game, etc.

People saying that prize pool is too big for quality of cs don't really understand. If female cs had a decent circuit with decent prize pools, then you can bet that there will be an increase in skill as more teams will be more motivated to play well. Dreamhack are making an investment, and whether it works or not remains to be seen.

I agree with your point, although I think people are salty about all this because it's not like the other mainstream tournaments are banned for women, it's just that the woman teams aren't good enough to make it through the qualifiers. There should be no real need for this female specializing tournaments if the teams got better.

First thought: GREAT Second thought: Why on earth are sexes separated in a sport like this? The women have same potential as men, they just happen to be way fewer, so aren't represented among the top players. I am sure some can get to the top if the skillpotential, but much more important, mentality is top notch. Or maybe they just aren't cheating as much as men are (zAAZ is cheating already though), who knows :p

because it's observably not true if it were, you'd naturally see female pro CS players on the levels of Niko or S1mple or f0rest fact is women just can't reach those levels. if they could, we'd see them on pro teams, as there is no rules about mixed teams

Their potential is limited by circumstances upheld by the community in itself IMO. Treat female players exactly like male players. Stop being nice if you wouldn't be to a man, stop being a jerk if you wouldn't be to a man. If the community could unite more across genders, female players would get much better practice partners, instead of playing with "nice guys" sucking up to her. Girls acting like that aren't dedicated to CS:GO, but dedicated to use it as a tool for social recognition. (Mimi being a prime example of this.) Cath and Goosebreeder are somewhat more neutral, as they don't play on the gender thing much.

They are better at regular sports for obvious reasons concerning their physique. Women aren't generally as competitive as men, which makes them less motivated to improve, but more motivated to simply have fun. There is a lot into play, it isn't simple at all. Numbers doesn't tell why something happens, it only tell that it happens. To explain why you have to look way beyond numbers to understand anything.
