Liquid defeat G2 to win ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals

Liquid hoisted the trophy in Montpellier after a hard-fought 3-1 victory over G2 in the grand final of the ESL Pro League Season 9 Finals (Dust2 19-15, Overpass 16-3, Nuke 12-16, Inferno 25-22).

The BO5 series started on Dust2, G2's map pick, with the Frenchmen picking up the CT pistol on the delight of the crowd in Montpellier. In an economy-swinging round early on Lucas "Lucky" Chastang picked up a triple to shut down the B-split, and François "AmaNEk" Delaunay came up big in a subsequent A retake, clutching the 1v1 against Jake "Stewie2K" Yip.

As the score was 7-1, Liquid added their second round with an A split, but a fast flank from Richard "shox" Papillon won G2 the following round. Liquid found an answer to G2's disruptive plays towards the end of the half, punishing their aggression, and finally broke the economy of their opponents thanks to Stewie2K's clutch play in a 2v5.

The North American side finished the half just one round behind, making up for that quickly by winning the CT pistol and shutting down G2's force buy. It seemed like Liquid would cruise to victory as Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski was helping his side add rounds to the board with back-to-back multikills, but after the score was 14-9, shox and co. started abusing the B bombsite, too much success.

After the score was tied at 14-14, Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken's quad kill pushed Liquid to map point. G2 got another B round in to force overtime, but Nick "nitr0" Cannella stepped up to lock down the smaller bombsite in the added rounds and Liquid closed out the map 19-15.

Liquid claimed the trophy after a grueling BO5 series

Kicking off Overpass, G2 secured a comfortable pistol round win and fended off the force buy of Liquid, only to fall to a Deagle-eco from the North American side, nitr0 and Keith "NAF" Markovic finding three unanswered frags on the A site entry. From that point, Liquid took control of the map, going on a seven-round-winning streak, capitalizing on G2's struggling economy.

After that, nitr0 and co. extended their lead as they swarmed the B bombsite quickly in the perfect round as Kenny "kennyS" Schrub was holding it alone (8-2), with G2 finally replying as AmaNEk stopped the A site approach with a triple. However, no momentum was built for the home team as Twistzz found two to turn around a 3v5, which Liquid built on to finish the half 12-3 up. Stewie2K and Twistzz combined for all five kills in the second half-pistol and Liquid closed out the map swiftly, 16-3.

kennyS was struggling to have impact on Overpass

Frantic, back-and-forth action opened up Nuke, where G2 took a 4-3 lead on the Terrorist side. NAF stepped into the spotlight then, bagging a triple with the AWP to shut down the Yard push, but G2 replied with a fast Ramp push with pistols to break their opponents' money and take the lead, 6-4.

The Frenchmen extended their lead to 8-4 before Liquid solidified their defenses, bringing the deficit down to just one round at half time following strong A site holds by Twistzz and EliGE. The start to the second half was back forth similarly to the first one, and as the score was 10-10, Audric "JaCkz" Jug's triple on Ramp broke Liquid's money.

The North American side was unable to find a solution for G2's holds and the French squad went up to match point, 15-11. A fast-paced approach did work for nitr0 and co, giving them a round, but G2 closed it out after that, 16-12, moving the action to Inferno.

The crowd got excited after G2 claimed the win on Nuke

Force-buys and mix-buys were won by both sides early into the fourth map of the series. Liquid was holding the lead throughout the majority of it, but still couldn't compose themselves and take control of the economy game. The back-and-forth continued throughout the first 13 rounds, when G2 finally got three in a row thanks to a crucial triple from shox. (7-6)

Liquid still bounced back, chaining the last two rounds of the half together, moving on to the offensive side with a minimal, 8-7 lead. However, the French side won the second half pistol and started the half 3-0, putting pressure on the North American side. Stewie2K alleviated some of that with a double entry that started Liquid's T side streak.

Five rounds went the way of nitr0 and co. (13-10), G2 finally stopped that with a 3v2 retake on A, and crucially, followed it up as kennyS and JaCkz locked down the B bombsite flawlessly. The last rounds were traded back and forth, G2 had the perfrect opportunity to close out the map as they got onto map point and Liquid had a low buy, but Twistzz clutched out a 1v3 to force overtime.

In the additional rounds, Liquid started to stabilize and dictate the pace of the game but securing only two Terrorist rounds in the end wasn't enough for them to close out the series, with G2 fighting back to force overtime number two. That wasn't enough to decide the winner, though, as shox stepped up with a key clutch on A to force OT3. Finally, that was where the match was decided, as Liquid had a perfect T half and closed out Inferno 25-22, 3-1 for the series.

Technically Vitality are better, at least achievement wise. G2 are a more rounded team, Vitality is very top heavy and reliant on players to perform. Both teams have started to show up finally, which is good.

Doesnt matter if they're top heavy. They have better tactics and teamplay which allow the less mechanically skilled players to have more impact and set the stars of the team up better. Not to mention a better map pool and leadership.
2019-06-23 23:18
I disagree with the team play, G2 showed a fair amount of that this tournament. Almost none of their matches relied on one or two players being a deciding factor (which is contrary to Vitality). Tactically I do agree, at least in theory (they had more preparation heading into cs_summit because there were less teams to scout). I think that if you removed zywoo from Vitality, their success would be considerably more limited than it has been. Also, G2 seeing Amanek finally playing comfortably look a lot stronger than they did when they first brought him in. There's a lot of synergy in the team.

A fair amount of it but no where close to the cohesion that the elite teams have - Liquid, Vitality and Ence. You're literally arguing against yourself by saying that g2 have more skill on the roster. They rely on individuals making good plays across the map and shox or Kenny closing out the rounds, often thru clutching. Vitality win rounds in much more dominant fashion due to having better executes/theory and CT setups which enable the players to shine. Teamplay and tactics are closely related, Vitality have better flash assist stats and better trade percentages. I really dont care about your speculative assumption of Vitality without zywoo. He is their star and they aim to set him up. Im not interested in talking about alternate realities, and it's not like G2 would be much with Kenny this tournament but quite clearly that's a moot point BECAUSE HES ON THE TEAM. You're acting as if I'm not respecting G2, I am. They just are not on the same level as Vitality in terms of structure and coordination currently.
2019-06-24 00:31
Vitality being rated where they are excluded some pretty big teams from the equation. I think, like G2, until they consistently perform arguing they are elite is speculative at best. They had some clearly built strategies for the teams they were going to play, which won them summit, but that's not a clear indication of top-tier play. Tell me where I said they had more skill, and how I'm contradicting myself? I haven't said that, I said they were more well-rounded as a team. Collectively they contribute more, equally, than Vitality. This is clearly evident in that you believe KennyS drove G2 through the tournament, but honestly shox, jackz and Amanek all had strong impact (until the finals, but that's expected of less-experienced players). What you could argue is that I do feel Alex has become a better fit for Vitality recently, and stepped up a lot, but largely the team still relies heavily on Apex and Zywoo's output. I may be speculating about zywoo, but you're pretending it's a moot point so you don't have to craft with a response. That's fine. I don't believe KennyS was the driving force behind G2, despite playing well. Often he isn't their biggest contributor (especially leading into this tournament). Also, just so we are clear, I never said G2 were better than Vitality specifically. I believe they are a better team (team play isn't the same as tactics, as you've asserted, look at ENCE for an example of team play being vital to success over tactics), in the strict sense of the word (they play together better), but simply not as well-drilled or tactical as Vitality. They both play very different forms of CS. I think you're misconstruing my criticisms as subjective opinion, when I'm a pretty objective person in my reasoning on things. There's no bias here, I have no stake in who is officially the better team.

The only point you made is that you belive that G2 has better teamplay. Teamplay is based around helping your teammates by trading kills, flashing for each other, setting up crossfires and covering angles. If they are more well rounded that clearly suggests that you think more of their players are capable of making plays i.e they have more skill. They are more equal but that's an irrelevant point. It doesnt matter who gets the kills as long as they are consistently taken and it's not as if anyone on Vitality is sandbagging. If Vitality objectively trade a higher percentage of their teams deaths and generate more flash assists then how can G2s teamplay be better? G2 win more rounds based on playmaking and clutching then they do by assisting teammates or tactically outplaying teams. Therefore G2s advantages lie within their players all having decently high peaks and often outskilling teams. They have good teamplay, just not elite. I never said teamplay was the same as tactics I said they're related. For example the better teamplay you have the more detailed tactics you will be able to do because you have better timings and understandings of your teammates. Vitality are a prime example of this, they all know how each other like to play very well and therefore are able to have very layered and diverse strategies.
2019-06-24 06:41
“I think that if you removed zywoo from Vitality, their success would be considerably more limited than it has been.” Wow, that is some fucking high-level analysis if I’ve ever seen any.
2019-06-24 00:31
Well it's not about his numbers. We all know he's their clear star. I'm just saying their ceiling is otherwise more limited by comparison. If course it's obvious they'd be less dangerous without him, but don't be a moron about it.

I think it is just the first time in a long time that Shox and Kenny are really feeling comfortable and seeing them go blow for blow with Liquid (overpass didnt happen) was such a nice feeling. Did they actually deserve it more maybe not did i really hope for it yes
2019-06-23 22:12
I wasn’t talking about their path in the playoffs, rather about a possible amazing storyline. They were super close to forcing fifth map in front of their home crowd (and frankly should’ve), and honestly even if they lost at the end it would’ve been way more interesting imo.

2019-06-24 01:40
Idk, G2 revitalizing the French scene and defeating the world’s #1 in front of their home crowd seems more exciting to me. Guess that’s just my opinion though
2019-06-24 02:57
Then why wasn’t it ez 3-0 for liquid without any overtimes?

Luck after luck? You do realize they were unlucky to have lost to North and had to start from the lower brackets right? Then after that, they had to go up from a hard route fighting mibr, astralis, mousesports, to eventually win out the tournament. Then you're sitting here acting like ESL PRO only had 1 game which is G2 vs Liquid. If G2 fought Astralis at quarterfinals, who do you THINK would have won? Yeah, there's an obvious pick. G2 would have been wiped out long ago if not for the line-up. In this case, G2 had the actual lucky break but overall, they did perform well in the finals against Liquid. You're just mad and pretty dumb with your analytics.
2019-06-27 00:40

As NAF admitted, there is no CS:GO hegemonic team as of today. When Astralis lost their hegemony (the real reason is yet to be discovered), several contenders showed up. Liquid is one of them, of course, but it is not an Astralis' replacement. It fights for #1 with Astralis, ENCE, and even Vitality.

Although i am a supporter of g2 ( shox in real ) I am actually sad g2 got to the finals of this event . Because now they will eventually stick with this lineup, which is of no use for french cs in the long run . Coz everyone knows lucky is not meant to play at this level . This is high time for shox and kenny ,if they really wanna win something they have to keep their ego aside and make one or two changes in the lineup .. -lucky +scream .. Now people will say scream jst has aim ...but well he always had aim yet g2 did well with him even after having smithzz and bodyy . You need aimers and high gamesense player to win at this level . And scream has great experience to play against such teams , he's not doing good now because he's constantly switching teams ..the amount of chance lucky got ...if given to scream you will see more then jst one taps .
