Liquid beat FaZe to win BLAST Pro Series Los Angeles
FaZe were bidding to make a repeat of the BLAST Pro Series Miami final performance and defy the odds, but ultimately fell flat against a Liquid side who continue to write history. The North Americans ended the tournament with a perfect 9-0 map record and will now turn their attention to next week's IEM Chicago, where they will go up against a stacked field of competition.
At first, it looked like we were watching a re-run from the round-robin stage game between these two teams. FaZe decided to pick the same map where they had been thrashed 16-4 on Saturday, hoping to show some sort of improvements, but the way the first half went, it looked like the plan had backfired. They struggled to find a way through the compact Liquid defence and the rounds that they won were few and far between, resulting in an 11-4 lead for the North Americans off the back of a great showing by Jake "Stewie2K" Yip, who was sitting on 21 kills.
FaZe entered the second half determined to turn things around but somehow let the pistol round slip away after giving Liquid's players too much respect in a 4v2 situation. Luckily for them, they were able to answer back immediately, and finally put together a string of rounds to make a slight climb back into the map, bringing the deficit to just three rounds.
Liquid then picked up the pace and won three rounds in a row to reach map point but could not strike the finishing blow as Ladislav "GuardiaN" Kovács pulled off a 1v2 clutch in the lower site. That round breathed new life into FaZe, who continued to push towards overtime before Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski clutched a 1v3 situation in a seemingly hopeless round to seal the deal for the North American giants.
Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken's time to shine came on Inferno. The Canadian star, who had had a quiet game on Nuke, single-handedly opened the A site in the second round with an AK to equalise the score at 1-1 after the pistol round had gone FaZe's way.
That was the start of a dominant run from the home side, were able to continuously pick holes in the FaZe defence. The European team improved towards the end of the half, but there was little that they could do to stop Twistzz, who racked up 25 kills to set his team up for a 9-6 lead.
Keith "NAF" Markovic went huge in the second half pistol with a stunning ace, the first three kills of which while completely blind. Despite FaZe's best attempts, they simply could not break through a water-tight Liquid defense as the North Americans won seven rounds without response en route to a convincing 16-6 finish.
