Renegades defeat ENCE to book semi-final spot in Berlin
The first quarter-final of the StarLadder Berlin Major kicked off on Mirage, where Renegades opened the scoring with a 2-0 start on the offensive side. A smoke defuse from Jani "Aerial" Jussila in third yielded ENCE’s first round of the map, but Renegades instantly answered back to extend their lead further to 4-1. The Finns were determined to prevent the half from slipping from their grasp by locking down a duo of rounds, however, Aaron "AZR" Ward and his squad once more hit back with a string of seven consecutive rounds to ensure a dominant advantage. ENCE could only salvage one additional round in the half off the back of a Sami "xseveN" Laasanen double-kill to head into halftime chasing an 11-4 deficit.
ENCE picked up a much-needed pistol victory in the second half but were unable to capitalise as a double-kill from Justin "jks" Savage in the following round enabled the Australian side to all but lock down the opening map. Soon after, a slick AWP triple-kill from Sean "Gratisfaction" Kaiwai secured map point for Renegades, with a 16-5 conclusion swiftly materialising.
The series then headed in the direction of Nuke, ENCE’s map pick, where the Finns looked to get a foothold in the quarter-final matchup. A 3-0 opening lead on the T-side was closed down by Renegades who secured two rounds of their own. Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen ensured the advantaged stayed with ENCE with a CZ-75 double-kill as the Finnish side extended their lead. The two squads then locked horns in a back-and-forth, with ENCE eventually coming out on top with a 9-6 edge at the midway point.
Renegades wasted no time levelling the score in the second half after a quad-kill from Joakim "jkaem" Myrbostad in the pistol paved the way for the Australian squad to take a 10-9 lead for the first time on the map. ENCE found their first round on the defence to even the score once more, however, Renegades took the lead once more, this time breaking the bank of the enemy side. A 1v2 from jks ensured the control remained with his squad, with the economic advantage seeing Renegades hit soon hit map point at 15-11. ENCE could only deny one match point before the Renegades overwhelmed the Finnish side to take the map 16-12, and book themselves a spot in the semi-finals.
