BLAST PREMIER announced with format changes and $4,250,000 prize pool for 2020

BLAST has revealed their plans for 2020 which include multiple weeks of play leading up to Spring and Fall Finals, an eight-team Global Final tournament, and a total of $4,250,000 up for grabs.

The announcement was released in between the first two maps of the grand final of BLAST Pro Series Moscow, revealing big changes in the BLAST circuit for 2020.

The tournament organizer promises more BO3s, a changed format, multiple ways of qualifying and the possibility for any team to advance to the Global Finals, addressing many of the issues the community had with BLAST events this year.

BLAST reveal big changes for 2020

The tournament circuit will no longer be called BLAST Pro Series, but BLAST PREMIER. Both the Spring and Fall seasons will feature three weeks of play in the lead-up, with 12 teams competing in three groups, similarly to ESL Pro League. The two best teams from each group will advance to the seasonal finals, with two more teams earning their spots through the "showdown".

Both seasons will feature a $1,375,000 prize pool, with the winner of the season grabbing the lion's share, $500,000. In addition to that, the eight best teams will qualify for the Global Finals, where a $1,000,000 will be reserved for the winner. The total prize pool across 2020 will be $4,250,000.

BLAST representatives had the following to say about the announcement:

"The next evolution of our tournament series is going to blow people away. We have spent months developing the right format. A format that will create the greatest entertainment product for fans at events and viewers watching across the world. We believe we have perfected that format. We will finish the year with a surge of excitement as we crown the 2019 BLAST Pro Series Champion. And we look forward to creating something incredible in esports with BLAST PREMIER in 2020." - Robbie Douek, BLAST CEO

"Developing our 2020 format and experience has been one of the most exciting tasks since I joined the company. We’ve taken onboard the incredible feedback from our show surveys and across the Counter-Strike community. It’s only been 12 months since we were in Istanbul, our second ever event, and here we are, almost a full trip around the world later and a lot wiser. The culmination of everything we’ve done so far is BLAST PREMIER - a competitive Best of 3 format, where anyone can win the Global Final - enhanced by great storytelling and a fan-focused experience."- Nicolas Estrup, BLAST Director of Product and Experience

The teams that will be competing in BLAST PREMIER have not yet been announced.

LA had average viewers of 98k, thats a lot for an average with a peak of 178k, plus all live attendance.
2019-09-14 19:47
98k is absolutely nothing. There are around 400.000 people with CSGO opened at the same time, and around 10 million unique accounts play CSGO at least once per month. It means you are pulling in less than 1% of the entire playerbase. Also with 100k viewers on average, it would mean sponsors together are paying over a 100$ per viewer.

They are burning a lot of money. In 2018, RFRSH had a negative balance of $7 million, in 2017 they had a negative balance of $4 million. That is $11 million lost in 2 years that have to be earned again somehow if they want to break even.

2019-09-15 01:04
You can search all public companies and their annual report. Just search "RFRSH Annual Report 2018" on google or "Astralis Annual Report 2018" you can roughly see all their spendings. Astralis for example is around 1 million negative every year, which is being paid for by RFRSH. Also Astralis' average salary per employee (there are 8 under astralis) is ~40.000 euros. I think they'll have to if blast really does come through with all these changes. Blast really is optimistic. I remember when they announced the first Blast Pro Series Copenhagen 2017. They said every live viewer in the arena would have a headset and would be able to switch between sounds from each of the three matches. They didn't come through with that one. They probably will with these ones.
2019-09-15 01:12

So ESL is scum too for pro league tour? Seems you dont understand how business works. Someone is eventually going to get an exclusive league, that's just how sports go.
2019-09-16 05:50
That's how american 'sports' function. Which I don't watch, because it's about drama and not about sporting excellence. The sports I follow are tennis, snooker and road cycling. All of them have an open circuit. Skill and good performance get you into the best tournaments, not money and shady exclusivity deals. Which is why I like CS and Dota and why I would never watch garbage like league of lesbians or overwatch. They are not egalitarian.
2019-09-16 11:20
Tennis and cycling top tournaments are still defined by which give the highest prize pools. It may be "open" but it's still money driven and theres a clear pro circuit so it might as well be closed. It's not like new companies or orgs can ever come into tennis and host top tier tournaments. That would never happen.

Another league offering more money than a major is a way to make competetive CS more serious. Lot of tier 1 teams today unfortunately are flukes

They basicially backed off from everything they brought to the table in 2019/2018. They needed 2 Year to find out that its the Community they need to satisfy and not some randoms who potentially are interested in watching Esports Events. Will be funny to see how ESL vs. Blast Pro work out. If teams agree to the ESL Terms the fuck all fans over.
2019-09-14 20:25
and DreamHack is with ESL
2019-09-14 20:59
They dropped massively in viewership so... They atleast learnt from their mistakes. But that was such a big mouth interview back then...

2019-09-14 20:32
blast major when???
2019-09-14 20:35
Franchised league future is here lads - get ready for big changes to the CS scene you know and love. I wonder if they'll announce which teams have partnered with BLAST and which have partnered with ESL, or if we will have to figure it out ourselves. And don't forget that dekay mentioned at least one other league - so it won't just be those two. The scene is going to be fractured (probably for a short while, until most of these companies go broke). There's upsides and downsides

Omg, Blast pro is the new best. An organizer who actually invests money into the tournaments to make it more competitive. And more fun to watch.

The bigger the total prize pool is for the entire scene, the better it is for the players and organizations. If Liquid, G2, and SK attend ESL while Astralis, ENCE and Vitality attends Blast Premier (and so forth), then it makes room for lesser ranked teams. Other tournaments might increase their prize pool as well in order to compete with Blast, and bigger prizes also tend to add more viewers.I think this is very good for the scene.

As much as people hate them BLAST events are the most pleasant to watch. I generally get tons of fun. And their production is just superb - nothing comes close. It's entertainment in its pure form. People who believe that BO3 are a must can go watch other "proper" tournaments.

It's a whole different format altogether and I find it interesting and cozy. It's not really professional but some people may like it better.
2019-09-14 21:28
ESL, faceit, eleague all have superior production. Less delays and tech issues during much bigger tournaments sometimes for weeks of play at times. If ESL and DH were only doing 2 day long tournaments they could splurge like Blast does as well.
2019-09-16 05:47
+99 I'm on the same page as you this is the only dynamic tournament.

2019-09-14 21:45
I hope format will be different with such a prizepool
2019-09-14 21:46
thank god bo3 im tired of this random bo1 shit
2019-09-14 21:47
Why that I find it entertaining and way more dynamic than other tourneys.
2019-09-15 12:00
Entertaining. Ok sure. Bo1s are more random and therefore if you like upsets then I can see how you might like this format better but I'm not sure how that translates to dynamics. Theres less storylines and way less ways to gauge the strength of a team across bo1s and overall it just makes the tournaments way more random and less competitive than true t1 events.
2019-09-16 05:45
I meant dynamic as fast without long pauses between the matches and I found the format very entertaining and promising.
2019-09-16 17:57
Who cares if its fast if the matches are low quality and random. Dont see how its promising when it ALWAYS leads to upsets and teams not making the final due to ties and round difference instead of their actual level of play, map pool, and skill.
2019-09-16 19:40
Thank you blast very cool
2019-09-14 21:55
