ESL Pro Tour Masters Championships to have $1 million prize pool after IEM Katowice 2020

The ESL Pro Tour Masters Championships, the two most prestigious events of the circuit each year, will have $1 million prize pools starting with ESL One Cologne 2020.

At a press conference at the Barclays Center, where the ESL One New York playoffs are about to get underway, Michal "Carmac" Blicharz, ESL's VP of Pro Gaming, announced that the new ESL Pro Tour flagship tournaments, the Masters Championships, will have a $1 million prize purse starting with ESL One Cologne 2020. Before that, one Masters Championship will be played, IEM Katowice 2020, where the prize purse will remain at the already announced $500,000.

ESL disclosed the ESL Pro Tour Masters Championships prize pools

The ESL Pro Tour is a consolidation of ESL's and DreamHack's circuits into a single entity with over 20 competitions running yearly across several tiers. The Challenger tournaments, which include the likes of DreamHack Opens, ESL's national championships, or MDL, will give way to the Masters tournaments, such as ESL Pro League or DreamHack Masters, with the two top events of the year, the Masters Championships, being IEM Katowice and ESL One Cologne.

Despite the circuit having a ranking system which will provide invites to teams for the Masters Championships, open qualifiers will still be provided for teams to qualify to ESL Pro Tour events. The first tournaments to send their winners to the first Masters Championship will take place this autumn, being DreamHack Masters Malmö, IEM Beijing, and the ESL Pro League finals

With the "where everybody can be somebody" tagline, ESL hope to create a circuit which will encompass competitive play from the grassroots all the way to the highest level while creating a single narrative across all of their brand's tournaments.

yes but that is small fry a bigger prize pool is what will really big up pro cs worldwide
2019-09-28 19:01
sticker prize is not a prize pool, sticker only benefit a team with huge popularity, new rise up team normally get less money. and big prize pool is good to attract new viewer to the scene
2019-09-28 19:07
The income is not that huge. Taking in account all the payments they do to actually have it
2019-09-28 20:26
"compared with other eSports... Dota2 is the ONLY eSports paying out more money per year then csgo. It only looks like the prize money is low cuz it's split over many events, while other games have maybe 1-2 big events a year. Also sticker sales also benefit teams (even if not dependent on their skill)

Rather have 1 major + cologne. Majors are dying (viewer count)
2019-09-28 20:30
15 replies
Player base peaked this major all time. Majors had a low viewer count because of upsets, overall viewership of CS is going up. And moreso if you think the viewer count is going down wouldnt it be logical to provide more high tier tournaments so that it goes back up and doesnt die?
2019-09-28 20:32
14 replies
We already have too many tournaments so people dont watch them. Less high tier tournaments will give more viewers per tournament
2019-09-28 21:22
13 replies
I mean that's blatantly false. Overall viewership is higher this year than it was last year per tournament and our player base just peaked. Plenty are watching. That's the reason theyre increasing prize pools and trying to make it a circuit.

If there's less tournaments, there will be bigger hype to watch them
2019-09-29 17:14

Doesnt mean it's better for the scene. More tournaments means more sponsors, more exposure and overall more money for everyone which leads to a healthier and more established scene

Less viewers means no sponsors nor money. Go back to finding water mr smart Africa. Low viewer count isn't healthy and that ain't called "established" with those numbers.
