Astralis edge out Liquid in Major rematch, advance to ESL One New York grand final

Astralis have defeated Liquid in a rematch of the StarLadder Major quarter-final, edging out their North American rivals 2-1 (Vertigo 16-9, Dust2 9-16, Overpass 16-13) to secure a grand final spot at ESL One New York.

The rematch of the StarLadder Major quarter-finals began on the same map, Vertigo, which Astralis picked for the second time in a row as they looked to once again establish dominance over the North American side. It was Liquid who asserted control early on, however, with a stifling defence spearheaded by a red-hot Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski giving them the opening six rounds of the series, as the 22-year-old superstar put up six multikills.

Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander then started finding weaknesses in middle with some key openers, leading the charge as the Danes were recovering from the poor start, finding a way to six rounds before the half came to a close on the back of the in-game leader's impact.

gla1ve led the way in Astralis' impressive comeback on Vertigo

Just like in Berlin, Liquid looked lost when Astralis got to the CT side. An A cross setup gave the Danish powerhouse the pistol round, and from there on there seemed to be no contest. The closest Nick "nitr0" Cannella's team got was a 1v1 clutch attempt from Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken, which was won by Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth on the other side, and Astralis rallied to a perfect defense and a 16-9 victory, gaining a 1-0 lead in the series.

The streaky nature of the match continued as Astralis went up 4-0 at the beginning of Dust2 on the CT side, while Liquid took over once a full long commitment put them on the board. Equalizing the scoreline with EliGE pulling off a 1v3, the local side started winning rounds in big disadvantages, including another 1v2 from the aforementioned star and two 2v4 situations.

That led to an 11-round streak to end the half firmly in their favor, and things continued along similar lines as Liquid switched over, quickly reaching map point while nitr0 added another 1v2 clutch on the board. Astralis didn't let their opponents finish off the second map with a 16-round run with a valiant effort up against the odds, but they were too far behind in the end and the series went to its decider at 16-9, 1-1.

Liquid are eliminated by Astralis for the second time in a row

Liquid were the first to get off the line on Overpass, conceding only the first gunround out of the first six rounds as EliGE and nitr0 each put in big multikills. Astralis then began closing the gap, eventually only letting go of two more before the half ended in a one-round advantage for them thanks to a couple of clutches from Xyp9x and gla1ve.

A dominant pistol round win later, the Danes built their lead to 10-7 and continued to mount the pressure on the North American side after Emil "Magisk" Reif added a triple and a 1v1 clutch to his name. Down by six, Liquid stepped up with Jake "Stewie2K" Yip securing a 1v2 to reduce the deficit to just two despite heroics from Nicolai "device" Reedtz, but a 1v1 from Xyp9x and a B defense swung the match back in the Danes' favor, who went on to win 16-13, 2-1.

yeah it s 2:1 for NrG in last 3months against Astralis in bo3 and they won both bo3 2:0 and astralis won in major that train map after dev1ice got one of the most epic pistol rounds in history of csgo if nrg won that round they would have train and probably that bo3

they didnt. astralis major champion. thats what champions are made of. winning crucial moments.

sure but eg is better team right now u can t always win crucial moments on experience u ll loose eventually
2019-09-29 00:16
astralis nr. 1, current major champion. next chance for EG is next major. nobody care if they win a minor tournament or even a few. like liquid did. major is counter strike champions league. who wins it is nr. 1 and the best team. period.

Still matches to go. Winning this tournament would confirm EG as a Tier 1 team, so they have a lot riding on it. Even a close loss to Astralis (like Liquid) would confirm them as Tier 1. If Astralis take them 3-0, then Astralis and Liquid will be only Tier 1, I think.

How do you get 4 free rounds off 1 pistol round? Wouldn't wanna lose the pistol round on your team

watch some pro matches and u ll see pistol is on average converted to 4:0 on pro level right now it s obvious that u don t watch that much cs just like baiting on hltv

Lol, that is just stupid. If that was the case, pro players would save the first few rounds after a pistol round loss. Especially if you think of it as "4 free rounds". You sir, are wrong
2019-09-29 00:56
wtf. if people eco next round, they have fullbuy. nrg got a plant +800 dollars and lost the round +1900 so they got 2700. now they get eco and lose again +2400 =5100, you can buy full equipment with that. and its only 2-0

Ay Ay, Sir! The only "problem" for the Kings of Counterstrike of all time and all that ... and bla bla ... is ... that EG is putting up some SERIOUS resistance! They may tear down G2 ... And THEN we will see, if "The Kings" can establish the "no doubt" position in CS GO as we all understand it from now on and forever more.
2019-09-29 02:22
No, astralis is already the best team of all time. 4 majors, 3 of them successive, and an entire year of unquestioned dominance is already enough to fill the criteria of the best team to play any counter strike game.

They of course changed the whole game, utility usage, professionalism outside the server etc. But it is also good to see, that they actually CAN be challenged! Both Liquid earlier this year and EG in New York pushed them out of "comfort zone" by insane pace and bold moves, even crazy at times, so when Gla1ve and co. don't have time to THINK - which is obviously their strength - they may actually lose to some "pretty fast guns in the West"! ;O)

I don´t think it´s onesided. The culture on HLTV is to pick on the loser, whoever they are or whereever they come from. If it´s not NA, then its Brazil, Russia, France or "Swedistan" ... it´s the tone in this place, sadly. But I do agree europeans dis NA more than the other way around.

What a fucking game betweeen Liquid and Astralis today, it was the true finale no doubt about. And 100 % respect to Liquid, there almost nothing between the two teams atm, what a great match, it could easily have been Liquid who won this one. Pheewwww that match took some years of me !

I have 100 % respect for EG/NRG, but the thing is they unproven still and haven't won any big events for a while, so i think its fair to say that Liquid and Astralis is the best team in the Tournament, however if EG beat Astralis tomorrow i will be the first to eat my words again :)
2019-09-29 00:32
for while they had stan as in game leader for 3 tournaments at major and new york in both tournaments they ve beaten astralis in bo3 2:0 so yeah they are dangerous
2019-09-29 00:28
Astralis did the 200 iq play. Purposely loose against EG to get Liquid in the semis so that Liquid loose more points in the rankings. EG is a much an easier opponent than Liquid, therefore Astralis will have an easy bo5, thus claiming the number 1 spot without a sweat. Also EG might very easily loose to G2, don't sleep on them

Device > Elige Glaive > Nitro Dupreeh > Twistzz Magisk > Naf Xyp9x >>> Stew What you're doing doesn't make any sense, you don't even compare them from their role XD just like mine. It doesn't matter, in the end Astralis wins because they don't rely on individuals as much as Liquid does; Most teams knew they would go down after the break and they did.
2019-09-29 04:57
Lmao are u idiot or bad troll Awp = device > nitr0 Best riffle(carry) = EliGe > Magisk Entry fragger = Twistzz > dupreeh Support/lurking = Xyp9x > Stewie Riffle = NAF > Gla1ve So obviously who cares that nitr0 and gla1ve ingame leaders, we talking only about individual level

Really interesting game to watch like always between these two powerhouses, great cs on many levels from both teams, was scared for outcome several times but the best team prevailed ;) Look forward to seeing if G2 can put up any kind of game against GE, they will be a formidable opponent tomorrow for sure for Ast, if they prevail against G2, which I like most other assume. As an Astralis fan (you can call me plastic or whatever i dont car) i really enjoyed this series. At some point i thought that can we watch a team that have the skill of Liquid and the brain of Astralis. Astralis may not improve their skill, they are already 24 yo at average but Liquid and EG are so young and can improve their tactics, teamplay and other stuff. If they keep working, eventually they will be the kings of CS. Respect to both teams, well played.

Stews highest(!) ADR on single map in this match was 51,2 according to HLTV matchpage, How the FUC* hes got 56,2 average from three maps? If you realize hes awping a lot, thats quite a big problem, hes really underwhelming. Nitro on Vertigo... you jast cant afford flukes like that, thats what gla1ve never - ok never say never but u get my point - displays. Even if hes off, he got his 12 - 15 frags per map. Thats why astralis are so good, they are consistent, it is very rare that someone is dragging them down massively (lately happened few times tho).
2019-09-29 00:59
dude, stewie had 73.6 ADR on Vertigo... it was nitro with 5-20 score and 35.6 ADR

Is Stewie always the biggest sucker in Liquid? He also looks so toxic and triggered hard by any negative outcome. Not sure if that's a positive atitude if you want to be a real number 1 (ofc Liquid's never been) And this must be the first time device bottom ranks in Astralis

That game was disgustingly close! And could have going to either side. It was a great and intense game that was fun to watch, just like in the Major. Stewie2K and Nitro didn't play good at all just like in during the Major, which they really need to fix if they want to be on top again. Interesting if Dev1ce can pick up the game again after a little hard time during the Liquid game
2019-09-29 01:40
Astralis once again buliding their spot as the best team in the csgo history... No one can beat them. Since they got magisk they went on a beast mode.

Liquid banned inferno. They have a 12 game win streak on that map. They KNEW astalis would take vertigo and they didn't ban it. It was an L from the minute picks were finalized. It ticks me off EG(NRG) can win bo3 but Liquid can't do the same. Liquid bested astalis for one final victory, in January at blast pro.
