Hard Legion duo barred from participating in WESG qualifiers

Hard Legion have found themselves unable to participate in the WESG regional qualifiers due to a ruling from the organisers.

In a recent TwitLonger post, Hard Legion revealed that the team is forbidden from participating in WESG qualifiers due to two members of the squad being Crimean nationals, whose involvement in the tournament "may well be refused without explanation", according to the post.

In March 2014, the Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol were annexed by Russia, a development unrecognised by a list of countries. As a result, economic sanctions were imposed on Russia, including ones specifically targeting Crimea.

Hard Legion unable to participate in the WESG qualifiers with full roster

Contacted by HLTV.org, UCC, the organizer of both the CIS and Russian regional qualifiers, mentioned only that WESG will not be held this year in Crimea and provided a link to a list of general rules for WESG 2020. However, the document in question has no rulings on country-specific restrictions.

The news comes as a heavy blow for Hard Legion, who are just outside the top 30 in the rankings. The Russian team rose to prominence in the summer after reaching the New Legends Stage of the StarLadder Major following victories over NRG, Vitality and forZe in the New Challengers Stage.

Last month, the players parted ways with DreamEaters, citing a range of issues, including unpaid tournament winnings and negative interactions with the management, later signing with Hard Legion, an organisation founded by popular Russian YouTube and Twitch.tv personality Aleksei "HARDPLAY" Baranov.

If they do want to be a part of Latvia, yes, that's their constitutional right. But another question is, did Crimeans really wanted to become a part of Russia (which they clearly didn't). Our government is so retarded that they don't understand that the annexation of Crimea only destroyed relationship with Ukraine the whole world and was followed by sanctions that hurt Russia's economy and damaged the standards of living of our citizens and, on the other hand, brought no profit for the country. That's just sad

The Crimean issue is complex and convoluted. Crimea was part of Russia until 1954, when Khrushchev drunkenly gave it to Ukraine as a gift celebrating 300 years of friendship between Russia and Ukraine. Of course, back then, it was expected that the Soviet Union would exist forever and thus the geopolitical implications were small. However, when the union collapsed, Crimeans, mostly ethnic Russians, no longer had ties to Moscow. Thus, many wished to return to Russian rule. That said, the manner in which Crimea was annexed was in violation of international law, and in addition Crimea really belongs to the indigenous Tatars who were subject to mass deportation and persecution from Russia in the early 20th century. Realistically, Crimea should belong to them, not Russia or Ukraine.
2019-11-14 17:52
that's all true, and even though the idea of giving Crimea to Tatars seems quite unrealistic, it would still be better if it remained a part of Ukraine

Yeah I agree with you, it's very unrealistic, they're such a minority now, I just think they're ultimately the only group that have a genuine claim to the land.

Lie.
2019-11-15 09:32
it is not true it's not a gift it's an exchange Ukraine received Crimea Russia received the Kuban and Slobozhanshchina Why? Because in the Crimea there were problems with electricity and fresh water (1961 or 63 the North Crimean Canal was built) The Soviet Union deported many Ukrainians and Crimean Tatars from Crimea and was replaced by fucking Russians 2014 Russia annexed Crimea, Russian military (green men) and their agents held a referendum not recognized by any normal country in the world in recent years, Russia has continued to act in the Crimea (which the Soviet Union did), it is expelling Ukrainians and Tatars and bringing in fucking Russians there I am absolutely tolerant of the citizens of Russia not depending on nationality! When I say fucking Russians, I mean those specific people who, through the problems of Ukrainians, are being transferred to the Crimea (with the assistance of the Russian government)
2019-11-15 13:10

wippie |

The concensus is that the transfer was either symbolic due to Khrushchev's fondness of Ukraine, or to further link the 2 nations due to Russia's presence at Sevastopol. I'd be very interested to see sources to do with Kuban and Slobozhanshchina as I'm ignorant on that. As I say, completely agree that the annexation and referendum were in contravention of international law and that Russia has persecuted Tatars.

A poll by the International Republican Institute in May 2013 found that 53% wanted "Autonomy in Ukraine (as today)", 12% were for "Crimean Tatar autonomy within Ukraine", 2% for "Common oblast of Ukraine" and 23% voted for "Crimea should be separated and given to Russia".[33] now compare that to Russias referendum "100% wanting to join Russia" LOL
2019-11-14 16:24
You don’t mind that this “International Republican Institute”, first of all, sounds like a propagandist, but is based in the USA, secondly, you write about 2013, the referendum was in 2014, and my friends from Crimea (over 50) confirm this is. Why are you listening to everything that is in this world, but just do not ask the inhabitants of Crimea themselves? Why are these internet warriors? Do you think that we, ordinary citizens, need this Crimea? Yes, I personally, like most of the inhabitants of Russia, do not need it, because we cannot even rebuild our cities. My advice to all people, from any country, is to find independent sources of information that will not promote propaganda. P.S. maybe 23% were citizen of Crimea?

Ukraine and the majority of international governments continue to regard Crimea as an integral part of Ukraine. Russia and 17 UN member states officially recognize Crimea as part of the Russian Federation, while Ukraine and 114 other UN member states do not. So they cant be considered russians
2019-11-14 16:35
So why Ukrainian police and structures don't working in Crimea. They too weak to control this territory, they can take Crimea, but can't. This world is world of strongest, words of weak just means nothing. That how this world working thousands years. Time going, in 100years nobody will talk that Crimea is Ukrainian

Dang. That’s bad:D. Politics in esports. Here we go. And what a lovely comments due to that. Give me popcorn UPD: i like how our ukr. brothers are celebrating and talking crap about this topic. Yes, we have troubles on political side. But i thought in esports we’re working together like friends.(cheering together for mixed team for example). Keep it up wtf

Ukraine and Georgia is considered as enemies in Russia everywhere, we can't be friends, even in esports, this pain will last for a lot of years. I don't think that Russians are still consider us as their "brother"-nations

In politics and "propaganda" news maybe. But in my opinion ordinary people are not involved in this. I have a lot of friends in Ukraine for example and we have good relationship despite this shitty situation. We just need to be smarter. UPD: i know, that no one will hear and understand me. And i idk how to solve this issue. Look at #373. This guy is saying never forgive. But almost for 100% he/she has relatives in Russia, and judging by his logic his relatives are involved in all what Russian government did too. We all have connections, so let`s be friends ffs:D

In very deed, it's great to see that you r not that1 who is involved in this shitty situation as u said, but u actually don't understand the whole problem and the situation. That ordinary people(ur words)are shooting at ukrainian soldiers RIGHT NOW while u r sitting at home. They are merely doing what they were ordered to do and that's the problem, they are not conscious about what is going on in their own country simply as like as you.Government could not do anything without their puppets(THAT ORDINARY PEOPLE U MENTIONED). So the problem is with the criminal government or people who dk how to solve this issue(u said as well)?that's the quesion and to be smarter is not enough. By the way, i do not have any relatives in russia.(like the most people from western ukraine). UPD: maybe we have some connections but we'll never be friends anymore after such a mean deed - NEVER ,forget about it.

I understand your frustration and position. But can u understand mine? I personally did nothing bad for ukr people or ukraine in general. But i’m being offended everywhere. Maybe if we are not friends, let’s at least talk like normal people. That shittalk is very bad. And i saw u talking like that(

i actually haven't written anything bad towards u, i don't understand why u percieve sth insulting in my comm as long as it's as polite as possible( 0 curse words, only that1 u used in your com describing situation). I agree that u r not guilty of being born in russia but it doesn't negate the fact that army of your country is tearing my homeland apart.Imagine me talking normally with russians after this.

"Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol were annexed by Russia" My friend live in Crimea, and he went to the referendum, which was, and like 90% of the citizens of the republic, what kind of annexation do you write about if you don't know? If even on this site they write this, then my ideas about non-political sport are completely dispelled ...

Read Constitution of Ukraine ,you can find information how to hold a referendum . So it was illegal and pointless procces, that's why it's called "annexed"

UCC shouldnt organize WESG qualifiers if they are barring players from participating.
