device: "There are two tournaments left and if we win them I think we can definitely call it our year"

After receiving his 15th MVP medal, Nicolai "device" Reedtz sat down with to talk about the ECS Season 8 grand final against Liquid and his personal achievements.

An exciting grand final capped off ECS Season 8 Finals, with Astralis picking up yet another victory over the North American side, with a 2-1 scoreline. As the dust settled, we managed to sit down with device for a quick interview about the match and the rivalry with Liquid.

device is hoping a good end to the year could put him in contention for the best player of the year

The 24-year-old AWPer opened up the interview by joking about Liquid's "gimmick pick", touching on some of the issues his team had early on into the series. The question about the best team of the year is still open, the Dane added, with the last two events set to decide the best of 2019.

The grand final was a roller coaster of a match, starting with the veto and Liquid picking Vertigo. What was the initial reaction to that map coming in?

"Gimmick pick."

I'm just kidding, it was something they said when we picked it at the Major. It is pretty funny I think, both teams could've won Vertigo, I had such a bad start individually, I actually had some FPS issues, I had 190 FPS, not to use any excuses but the admin was also noticing it, trying to change things up. I didn't really get into my game and I was thinking too much about that, you know, sometimes as a player you lose focus.

But of course, they surprised us a lot even though we knew we would probably get it as a third map, after they picked Dust2, so in the end it was just in a different order than we expected. But yeah it was a little bit tough to play against them, they are really good with the wallbangs, especially.

The start of the T side on Vertigo looked shaky from your team, it seemed like individually, Liquid was pulling off multikills where they werent' supposed to, what was the issue there?

I mean, we were just running around like headless chickens, saying that we need to force ourselves into the game individually. Then we got a first pick and because we didn't have the structure we are used to — because we were trying to just play ourselves into the game individually —, we were just getting caught off guard. There was a round where nitr0 did a 4K in middle or something like that where if we would've just gotten him if we held an angle.

And we lost so many rounds where they had MP9s and they only lost to us when he had Deagles, so it was such a weird game to play and I can't imagine what gla1ve was thinking (laughs), he is the in-game leader, trying to figure out what we should do and every time we had a Deagle round we would win but every time we had money we would just throw the round or wouldn't execute perfectly, so it was a pretty weird game, to be honest. It didn't remind me at all of the other games we played against them on Vertigo.

Was it difficult to get back into the game on Nuke after that?

Yeah, we even threw the pistol round against nitr0, I think that tilted us a little bit, we know how to deal with it so it wasn't really that serious, then NAF hit the shot through the vent and then he hit a shot on the ladder... so many things were going their way but gla1ve pulled out some really good calls, we got a lot of good openings and we knew that they had to try to control the pace on the CT side, push lobby, push outside, so we just tried to bait them into what we wanted to do.

I think we played amazingly on the T side and then started off pretty slow again on the CT side. Then everything started working for us, I got a double kill, gla1ve got a lot of smoke spams - as usual. So yeah I think we just played to our strengths even though we didn't have momentum at any point. And then on Dust2 we just had the momentum from the beginning.

Going into the final few tournaments of the year with a big win, how do you feel about the year as a whole now? Obviously you started with the Major win, then Liquid had their run, now you are back to winning a couple of tournaments. Will you be able to claim this year as your own or do you think it is already set?

There are two tournaments left and if we win them I think we can definitely call it our year, we won both the Majors, I think those are probably the most important tournaments that people think about. Then the other thing is, when we had that amazing 2018, everyone was thinking — but not saying it—, that it is kind of impossible to replicate it. But I think that we've shown that it is almost possible to replicate it, being in all the finals we've been in, playing amazingly, reinventing ourselves after the group stage losses at last ECS and some weak tournaments.

Yeah, we won both the Majors and we've been playing amazingly, so I'm of course extremely happy with how everything has panned out, it could've been a lot worse and it just shows that everyone that is involved with the team, the players and the staff around us, we just have a good understanding of what we want and which direction we want to move in.

This is another ECS MVP for you, your fourth. Is there something that especially suits you at these ECS events?

When you say it like that, there must be something, right? But no, in all honesty, I think it is not as stressful of a tournament, we only have one game per day and if you do well in group stage you have a day off so that is pretty nice. I think other than that, it is pretty random. I think that at this tournament Magisk also deserved to be the MVP. It is always like that, when we win tournaments it is not only one player doing the heavy lifting. Shoutout to him, and other than that, I'll see next ECS, hopefully I can get it again, it is always a bonus when you win the final to find out that you are the MVP.

Of course, it also helps with the top 1 [player of the year] spot, I don't know, ZywOo has amazing stats, but he is not going to be at any tournaments so I just have to play amazingly to maybe be able to deserve it. But I'm trying to focus on the tournament and then we will see.

they won EPL S3 Finals and DH Austin between the two majors. At EPL they beat G2 in a bo5, Nip in a bo3(who just won DH Malmo), astralis in a bo3, optic(NA roster) in a bo3. At DH Austin they beat liquid in a bo3, tempo storm in a bo3

chicago had vita and ence which were the best teams besides astralis, at the time nrg and liquid, sydney the best team besides liquid was uh fnatic and mibr lmao literally every tier 1 event astralis won had liquid or nrg/eg so id say astralis has more meaningful wins, plus they made it to the finals at new york (which had liquid and eg) and top 4 at malmo and cologne (also very stacked with liquid and eg in attendance), while liquid bombed out in groups at malmo

Liquid had few good months just because astralis skipped almost every event liquid won. They have got confidene with those wins, which would never happen if astralis is there. Even in liquid prime they were super close to losing to astralis in esl pro league (the only head to head during liquid rise, still almost lost that game). Liquid never had an era. Astralis just took a brake.

Elige was crucial in Liquid's success this year, insanely good and very consistent in comparison to his peers and Zywoo carried the fuck out of Vitality. Honestly, the difference between a major and other T1 tourneys like ESL One or EPL finals is just more hype and a bigger price pool (once you are qualified). The IGS is much harder to achieve and requires much more consistency than a major win. If Astralis win EPL Finals and BLAST, I would say they are even with Liquid. Otherwise it was (all in all) more like Liquid's year besides the fact that they are not on their best level anymore.

What the fuck are you talking about? Majors are clearly harder to win than any other T1 event or IGS for that matter. Everybody wants to win a major, and it’s the event with all the best teams. Teams are bootcamping/praciting weeks, sometimes months up to a major event. Major > IGS 2x majors > IGS
2019-12-02 13:21
No, the way from groupstage to final (BO3) at a major is very similar to other T1 tournaments, the final not even BO5. It is obviously harder to win 6 T1 tourneys or 4 T1 tourneys (from which at least one is ESL One Cologne or IEM Kato) than winning one major. Definitely IGS >> major. I would even claim that IGS > 2x major, maybe IGS >= 2x major

BO5 in Final doesn't mean that tournament is hard. Major is the biggest tournament that every pro CS want to win, you can ask S1mple, Elige, Zywho, etc. that are they want to win? Because Astralis had won to many Major doesn't mean you should create that delusional thing like Taco (that deep shit had said Major not important like any Tier-S tournament LUL). Stop at here pls.

"BO5 in Final doesn't mean that tournament is hard. Major is the biggest tournament that every pro CS want to win, you can ask S1mple, Elige, Zywho, etc. that are they want to win?" This is due to the fact, that - as I already said - the major is much more hyped by the entire community and the bigger price pool. In terms of quality and difficulty of the matches the major is on the same level as other T1 tourneys. (For example .: If Astralis has to beat fnatic, FaZe and Liquid in the playoffs to win a T1 tourney it would be definitely harder than beating NiP, mibr and AVANGAR at a major.) It is the logical conclusion that an Inter Grand Slam is much harder to achieve, and thus more valuable, than winning a major. In fact, since TACO won already 2 majors and 0 IGS, I would say that his statement is authentic and not delusional.

So that why Taco want to win his third Major but he cant. Remember Astralis had beat Liquid and NRG before facing Avangar in Berlin. So dont blame them because they faced a weaked team in the final. Major already is the biggest achievement in the CSGO before the GS was born, not because hyped by the fucking community. You should remember the day when Fnatic won 3 Major, they are the best era of CSGO, and now Astralis won 4 to break them, that is a hard and long way to earned that. Looked Liquid and Navi now, they cannot even a single Major so you know this is hard or not. Please dont bring the grand slam in here, there is no chance to compared it.
2019-12-03 04:22
IGS is a big achievement, and the way liquid did it in 63 days is something special, and was for sure a great run. Anyway, two of the four tournament wins was without Astralis attending. Compared to a major where all the best teams is attending, is definitely a harder tournament to win. But ask any pro player. I’d bet 100% would rather win a major than the IGS. Achievement and prestige over money.

Considering they had to take a break because of device being ill, i would say they have done pretty good. Won 2 majors and plenty of tournaments
2019-12-02 10:43
Malmo fail = reaching the semifinals. I love how Astralis is considered trash when they don't dominate every single team.

...Because domination is the most bragged-about quality of Astralis, it is the word of 2018. Name one tournament of 2018 which hasn't used 'Astralis' and 'dominate / domination / dominant' in the same sentence. So, of course, when all you hear about Astralis is them strangling teams, the following isn't really a satisfying result: - beating Envy (OMEGALUL) - beating G2 (roster had 0 prep and was announced literally in the day of the tournament's start) - beating Vitality (a very good result) - losing 2-0 to fnatic (a loss to a winnable team, considering the maps were Overpass and Nuke, their signature maps)
2019-12-02 14:13
Overpass is not their signature map.

I'm pretty sure you cannot call it your year. Liquid won the IGS and 6 tourneys in a row. IMO the IGS is much harder to achieve than a major win (because you need consistency). So even though Astralis won 2 majors this year and even if they win EPL Finals and BLAST, I wouldn't say they dominated this year. It is then pretty even between them and TL.
2019-12-02 12:46
liquid might won grand slam but era was so short Astralis so far Liquid in any thing

According to The Pro players; Major > Every other Tournament even, A Major is what EVERY single Pro player dreams of Winning ...
