Heroic take down North to book semi-final spot in Leipzig
Heroic looked down and out in this exciting derby after losing the first map and allowing their opponents to get two match points, but they bravely took the game to North and equalised the series in overtime before heading into the decider map, which turned out to be a walk in the park.
It is the sort of recovery that often tends to produce champions, though the Danes know they will need to be even more convincing to be able to measure up against BIG, who looked in stunning form on the first day of the event. As for North, the DreamHack Open Sevilla champions will be kicking themselves for not getting over the line, but they leave Leipzig with the feeling that they are already starting to show some improvements under Mathias "MSL" Lauridsen. They will now go back to the drawing board ahead of their next event, the Dreamhack Open stop in Anaheim, in a month's time.
North, who had dropped down to the lower bracket after losing to MAD Lions on Friday, came out firing on all cylinders and raced to an 8-0 lead on Nuke, their own map pick. Heroic picked up three precious rounds before switching over to the CT side, where they finally managed to get a footing in the game, but MSL's troops held on and took the map in convincing fashion after the break.
The DreamHack Open Sevilla champions seemed determined to wrap things up in just two maps and secured a 12-7 advantage on the back of a seven-round winning streak. Patrick "es3tag" Hansen and Johannes "b0RUP" Borup came to Heroic's rescue with some great individual plays before a 1v2 clutch from MSL swung the tide back North's way.
Facing two match points, Heroic dug deep and forced overtime, taking control of proceedings. Nicklas "gade" Gade still tried to keep his team in the game by winning key 1v1 situations, but to no avail as Marco "Snappi" Pfeiffer's side locked down the map with some stellar plays from b0RUP and Casper "cadiaN" Møller in the second overtime.
The final map of the series, Train, ended up being a one-way street. North's decision to start on the T side after winning the knife battle backfired horribly as they picked up just two rounds throughout the first half. Martin "stavn" Lund, who was coming off three consecutive below-average maps, shook off his earlier lackluster performances and stole the show on the T side to get Heroic over the finishing line.
