BIG see off Heroic to secure grand final spot in Leipzig
In a monumental success, the German team have made it to the grand final of a LAN tournament, something they hadn't done since ESL One Cologne with a previous iteration of the roster, featuring just two players of the current lineup. The home side will now face Renegades for the trophy and a spot at this summer's Masters event in Jönköping.
The achievement comes off the back of a strong performance against Heroic on Overpass and Inferno, with Nils "k1to" Gruhne and Florian "syrsoN" Rische coming through for the team in what was a strong collective performance.
The first map, Overpass, kicked off with a fruitful pistol round for Heroic, but the Danes' momentum was interrupted by a force buy from the Germans. After his team conceded a string of rounds, Patrick "es3tag" Hansen wrangled the match back in Heroic's favor off the back of an M4A4 triple kill. The Danes' lead was met with a solid 1v2 effort from Ismailcan "XANTARES" Dörtkardeş, who inspired BIG towards a late-half comeback as the Germans walked away with an 8-7 T side scoreline.
BIG kept their foot on the pedal, securing the latter pistol round thanks to a USP-S 3k from k1to. After some early retaliation from Heroic, Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz and co. found themselves nearing the finish line, eventually closing out map one with a comfortable 16-9 score.
Heroic set themselves back on track with a successful pistol round opener on the CT side of Inferno, which they followed up with the next two rounds. The Danes were hit with a triple kill from tabseN, who placed his team on the scoreboard, and that round apparently motivated BIG to show up, as a string of success resulted in a lead for the home side. The Danes woke up towards the latter stages of the half and grabbed a narrow 8-7 lead.
Off the get-go, BIG's defence demonstrated confidence, as the Germans were able to surpass their opponents not only in the pistol round, but the ensuing five as well. An opening on the A site produced Heroic's first round of the half, and contrary to their earlier struggles, the Danes found consistent success, which allowed them to close the discrepancy to 12-13. With the prospect of a third map looming, BIG tightened up their defense and eventually put the lid on the series after the duo of Tizian "tiziaN" Feldbusch and syrsoN shut down an A site hit, ensuring their team's participation in the grand final in Leipzig, much to the crowd's delight.
