ESL announces "historic" long-term deal with 13 organizations

ESL has formally announced the long-rumored deal dubbed the "Louvre Agreement", which sees 13 team organizations enter a long-term partnership with the tournament organizer.

Previously known as the "LANXESS agreement", the deal covers ESL Pro League as a standalone project and the ESL Pro Tour circuit as a whole, in both of which the 13 member teams will have various privileges for an unannounced period of time.

Those privileges include direct invitations to each season of ESL Pro League — in which the member teams are now majority stakeholders — and a number of spots reserved for the partnered organizations in other ESL Pro Tour tournaments, from which they will also receive a revenue share as long as they attend a large enough amount.

The agreement has been signed by organizations behind the vast majority of the current top-15 teams in the world, including Astralis, Liquid, Evil Geniuses, mousesports, and fnatic. The full list looks as follows:

The deal sees ESL Pro League transform to a vastly different competition compared to previous seasons, which will have a single global division and no longer feature a relegation system. Instead, it will comprise the 13 member teams and 11 others who will need to qualify every season.

After the league was cut down to 24 teams for the upcoming Season 11 and onwards — a decision that was met with much criticism —, ESL introduced a special qualifying process for Season 12. That will offer teams who were cut from the league as a result of the changes a second chance (coupled with MDL Season 33) to make it back to the league. This will change from Season 13, as the main avenue to qualify will be via the ESL World Ranking.

To learn more about the reasoning behind some of the changes and the agreement as a whole, you can watch the ninth episode of HLTV Confirmed from February 3, on which ESL's Vice President of ProGaming, Michal "Carmac" Blicharz, talked about the subject at length.

Hopefully they can improve that ranking before it will be used. But yeah, would be interesting to know how will teams secure their spots, if there is contacted teams they stay in no matter what? How is it with other teams I wonder.
2020-02-18 16:53
It is in the Louvre Agreement, 6 teams will be invited based on ESL World Ranking (a new ranking partnered with hltv and this csspa) and the other 5 will qualify through MDL.

Romania JeeFo
Why did they lose? To my knowledge it was announced from the beginning that Flashpoint would feature Tier 2 teams.
2020-02-18 16:59
no, their initial plan was to essentially do what ESL has done now. basically everyone is pushing for exclusivity. flashpoint had mibr and astralis on their side and they thought they could bring in all other top teams but ESL negotiated better and astralis jumped ship, so flashpoint had no other option than becoming a tier 2/3 league.
2020-02-18 17:15
The fine for not being top 20 team isn't sth astralis want pay. Cuz the clan and their success depends on all 5 players. If they disban or change they can't afford the players they want or need. Astralis isn't liquid that have millions in the backyard. So it is in business way the right decision. Also free invites to tournaments.
2020-02-18 22:33
Lol you're wrong. Flashpoint tried to get every one of these teams and failed miserably

This is a smart response to Flashpoint. They've essentially done what FaceIT wanted to do only a far more professional job of it. Rather than 2 teams qualifying to join the 10 partner teams like in Flashpoint, EPL will have 11 teams qualifying to join 13. To me that shows significantly more opportunities given to outside, less financial teams to enter and achieve something within the league based purely on merit. I only hope their qualifying system doesn't exclude major regions of the world like Flashpoint does (Asia/Oceanic). I don't like these franchises at all, but Flashpoint really forced ESL's hand here and this is a solid response. Thorin "This sucks. How do I get into a Complexity..." Well I guess you could work hard, qualify for EPL and perform well against Complexity. That might catch their eye aye ;-)

Franchising ... hooray ... First nail in the coffin for smaller orgs especially since qualification will be through ESLs own rating and anyone who remembers how they gave special treatment to VP for several seasons to keep them in EPL knows what to expect from that ... also orgs who allrdy qualified for EPL should have been automatically qualified for the league as well and shouldnt have to go through another qualifier for a chance to get what they allrdy earned last season.
2020-02-19 17:28
Don't get mad at anyone. This industry is so fragile for everyone. Tourny organisation, team organisation and players are triangle which feeds eachother. Instead of keeping things fragile they just wanted to clear their way. We will see if this is gonna work out but eventually, we, the viewers will decide that.
