Gen.G defeat Complexity to secure playoff berth
Gen.G have been going in crescendo at DreamHack Open Anaheim, where they turned their first map around with a CT-side comeback on Nuke against ENCE before showing they’re the team to beat by taking down the red-hot Complexity, who come off of a great run at BLAST Premier and beat MIBR 16-11 in their opening match in California.
Gen.G thus become the second team to qualify for the semi-finals in Anaheim where they join FURIA, who topped group A by thrashing North in their winners’ match, and will have one day off as the group stage's losers’ and decider matches play out ahead of the playoffs.
Four pistol kills on the attacking side of Inferno by Sam "s0m" Oh put Gen.G in the lead. He then died after taking down two players in a 1vs3 afterplant on B, but the bomb had ticked long enough that Valentin "poizon" Vasilev, the last remaining CT, was forced to run down banana as to not get caught in the explosion. Complexity then got on the board, breaking Gen.G’s economy to make it 2-2 against the eco. The North American side then successfully exploded onto the B site with pistols while down 2-4 in the seventh round to keep it within one. Back-and-forth rounds kept the half close but Gen.G took the lead with s0m at the helm, ending 9-6.
s0m once again took center stage, downing three enemies in the second pistol round to bring his tally up to 7 across both and helping Gen.G hit double digits. The North American team grabbed a 12-6 lead before Complexity could win an attacking round, but the Europeans followed it up and started to snowball after breaking their enemies’ economy by abusing the B site. It was in the twenty-fifth round with a tied score that Gen.G retook their lead with a successful 3vs3 retake on A, going on to close the map and match out 16-13 to qualify for the playoffs.
