100 Thieves eliminate mousesports in three-map nail-biter to secure last quarter-final berth
100 Thieves had an incredible run through the lower bracket after losing to Group B winners G2 on the opening day of IEM Katowice. They beat TYLOO in their first match, as expected, but then took out two favored teams, Evil Geniuses and mousesports, to secure a spot among the six best teams in Poland.
Four kills by Aaron "AZR" Ward got the last group stage match underway as 100 Thieves took a 1-0 lead on the attacking side of Inferno before doubling their lead thanks to a successful 2vs3 afterplant by AZR and Jay "Liazz" Tregillgas. mousesports then tallied a round in the fourth thanks to a quad by Özgür "woxic" Eker and Chris "chrisJ" de Jong followed it up with an ace before the European combine tied it up against an eco, 3-3.
Justin "jks" Savage and Sean "Gratisfaction" Kaiwai gave the lead back to 100 Thieves, who then went up 5-3 and prompted mousesports to call a pause. The half went down to the wire, 7-7, and was closed out with a lead by mousesports thanks to a triple by woxic.
Doubles by Gratisfaction and jks in the second pistol round made it even once again, but mousesports found their pace on the attack with an even kill spread across the European team’s roster. 100 Thieves put up a fight trading rounds deep into the map, but were ultimately unable to stop mouz’s assault and went down in the series after a 10-16 result in the first map.
The series then moved to Dust2, mousesports’ pick, and although they were able to win the first pistol round on the attack they were quickly behind 1-3 after losing against the forcebuy. An impressive Joakim "jkaem" Myrbostad powered 100 Thieves to a 6-1 lead with 10 kills and 117 ADR in seven rounds until mousesports won a forcebuy thanks to desert eagle entries by David "frozen" Čerňanský and Robin "ropz" Kool to get back into the match. The Europeans brought it to a 7-7 tie thanks to a four-kill round by ropz in the fourteenth, but were unable to take the lead into the half in the last round.
100 Thieves won the second pistol round and gave themselves some breathing room by converting against the forcebuy and the eco as they charged toward the finish line after winning the first gun round with a B strike. They went on to take a 14-7 lead before mousesports could even respond and they kept their momentum despite the round lost to end the map 16-8.
Finn "karrigan" Andersen and chrisJ secured the first pistol round on Nuke with doubles and took a 2-0 lead before jkaem clutched a 1vs2 afterplant on B in the third round. mousesports went right back to winning with a full buy the following round an karrigan denied the thieves a crucial round when up 4-2 by he killed the bomb planter in the lower site. A triple by Liazz with two frags by AZR the following round kept it close as could be until the end when chrisJ pulled last second heroics in a 1vs2 in the fifteenth round to kill the bomb planter and make it 7-8 before switching sides.
100 Thieves increased their lead in the second half winning the two first rounds to go 10-7, but frozen and ropz with doubles kept it a close affair. 100 Thieves struggled with the economy early on as mousesports brought it back to a tie, 11-11, but once they evened out they started to make a run, reaching 14-11 after breaking mouz’s economy. 100 Thieves started to falter, giving up their three round lead, but jks secured map point for his team with a crucial triple in ramp before closing the map and match out, 16-14, to earn a spot in the playoffs.
