HLTV.org joins Better Collective

HLTV.org today announced it has been acquired by Better Collective, a leading sports betting media group with a vast portfolio that includes a range of websites and products.

February 28 2020, Copenhagen, Denmark – HLTV.org ApS, which includes HLTV.org and Dust2.dk, today announced that it has been acquired by Better Collective, a leading sports betting media group headquartered in Copenhagen and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm (BETCO).

The deal is worth up to €34.5m (257m DKK), of which €26.4m (197m DKK) will be paid upfront. The founders of HLTV.org ApS will continue as daily management for at least three years to ensure the continued development of the platforms and communities.

HLTV.org Aps CEO Martin Rosenbæk said: "HLTV has always been neutral in the CS:GO landscape in the sense we stand as independent. For 18 years this has always enabled us to provide unbiased news and coverage. Partnering with Better Collective gives us the much-needed backbone for HLTV.org in terms of a strong organizational setup that is required for us to continuously provide you with the best product possible. Better Collective has given HLTV management free hands to keep developing and improving the site as we have done for 18 years. We are very excited and hope you are as well.

Founded in 2002 in Denmark, HLTV.org is the leading Counter-Strike coverage platform in the world, providing news, match coverage and player and team rankings. On average, the website has more than 26.5 million visits per month.

Dust2.dk was founded in 2016 and remains the leading CS:GO community in Denmark. The site provides news from the esports industry and live scores, and also hosts Denmark’s official Top 10 CS:GO team list. On average, the website has more than 250,000 visits per month.

So? Doesn't mean that the actual value can't be lower than what they paid
2020-02-28 19:14
it's a predictive investment. If esports continues growing HLTV might be like reddit soon (etwas überspitzt gesagt)
2020-02-28 20:23
Yes exactly. Venture capitalists throw money onto 10 different things and if just one of them gets big it balances out the other 9 failures
2020-02-28 20:24
you got it :) might lead to tougher requirements, though, because bigger companies want to keep everything fine for public visitors. So maybe RIP cancer forums :(

Betting sites contract.
2020-02-28 19:04
Because HLTV has a shitton of traffic and a decent ad revenue. You would be surprised how much a website with high traffic can make from ads. And when you buy a website like HLTV you usually pay what the site would generate in income for the next 5 years
2020-02-28 19:37
"The main business model of the platforms is to promote and advertise esports betting operators. During the last financial year, from July 1st 2018 to June 30th 2019, the platforms generated approximately 5 million EUR in revenues with earnings before tax of approximately 3,5 mEUR."
2020-02-28 21:36
If true then they got gnomed hard. Imagine getting a scalable online business in esports only valued at a P/E ratio of 10.

Rip off-topic. I understand that the owners with to cash out or monetarize their hltv shares. No bad feelings for. That it goes to some betting shit is understandable, in the end cs:go is a gigantic esport betting add, even tho I dislike that choice. Depends of the choices now, hltv will change for the better of the most, but for the worst of the old user base, the userbase that makes wired off topic threads, memes, offensive jokes, haha and cry threads and so on. We will see where the journey goes, gz for the owners, but no way they will stay 3 years in charge. I give them 1 year, ends like the whatsapp dude.

I already read it, I want to understand your point on this. My first intention on the reply was to the user above saying that what Lurppis wrote were facts. I don't agree with this statement, "HLTV is a gambling business (largely for an underaged audience) with some Counter-Strike coverage on the side." (sic) This still is till this date the best and reliable source about CS to date. If you got another please let me know. Yes, these ad gambling sites are annoying however money doesn't talk, it swears. Someone gotta pay for what they conquered, their writers/journalists etc, also as you can see the majority of CS related content is monetized and sponsored exactly by gambling sites. Another fact is that Lurppis was one of the writers for HLTV and his departure wasn't in good hands, it's known his beef with Nomad.

You guys deserve a big payday. Thanks!
2020-02-28 21:25
How long did it take you to make this decision? Are you leaving management after three years? In my opinion hltv is a strong community hub with somewhat regulatory power in the esport that is CSGO. Furthermore you mention being neutral, which is why I believe this might be a bad idea. Tbh it looks like a sellout. Not that I mind you guys getting a real number for being such huge part in establishing a huge community and culture, but that also leaves a huge responsibility. Information here is kinda lacking. Maybe I'm just afraid of changes, especially knowing that money is prime motivator for a betting media group. Don't let focus switch too much from community and culture to revenue.
2020-02-28 21:39
a community hub? let's be real, this is a statistics + news site as far as cs goes. its news section is the main reason it's relevant at all. the "community" sections consists of a cancerous forum filled with edgy kids, spammers and 4chan fans. at least back when the blog feature existed you could see some people try to contribute and post something interesting regarding cs. nowadays most threads are created by kids seeking attention or mentally damaged adults trying to cope up with their stress by triggering people. oh and overused memes, but that's fine i guess. you have mods that create an illusion of moderation because on the one hand you can't let the place completely go to hell (i.e ppl posting child pornography, gore etc), but on the other if you actually moderate the forums you'd lose most of the community. that's why steam integration never happened, that's why i didn't even need to specify a legit email when creating this account. a random phpbb forum with like 10 visitors requires an email verification, but not the "leading cs site in the world". it's comical. i don't even want to mention the fact you had passwords passed as plain text a few years back. not even a drunk college drop out would consider coding an authentication system like that. hltv finally selling out is very exciting news though having them mismanage the place for 3 more years not so much. this is a good chance for some competition and perhaps someone will establish an actual community where people come to discuss CS and enjoy matches. criticism aside gratz for hltv owners for making bank. i suppose it wasn't so hard, though. all they had to do is show any match page with all those salty betters bitching nonstop and the gambling org was sold.
2020-02-28 22:29
Lol they will use the news and site to scam people with their betting gamble sites.

"HLTV has always been neutral in the CS:GO landscape in the sense we stand as independent. For 18 years this has always enabled us to provide unbiased news and coverage. Partnering with Better Collective gives us the much-needed backbone for HLTV.org in terms of a strong organizational setup that is required for us to continuously provide you with the best product possible." So does this mean there goes your independence and unbiasedness?
