NAVI beat OG to extend winning start in ESL Pro League Stage 2
The CIS giants stuttered, then moved into high gear, once again coming out victorious in the end after giving a poor account of themselves on the opening map. The match at times resembled NAVI's victory against Astralis yesterday, though the IEM Katowice champions did not find things as easy as they had against the Danes and left it late to wrap up the series against a stubborn OG side, who are still winless in this stage of the league.
NAVI showed the exact same issues on Inferno that had cost them the opening map against Astralis. They were completely outfought during the early stages of the game, in which Kirill "Boombl4" Mikhailov was constantly caught off-guard as he attempted to take banana control without any sort of help.
With the game starting to get away from NAVI, Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev and Denis "electronic" Sharipov gave the team a bolt of resurgent energy with some key multi-kill frags as they combined for 23 frags in the half (68 percent of NAVI's total) to reduce the deficit to five rounds before the break.
Now playing on the Terrorist side, NAVI kept themselves in the game after winning a messy pistol round on the A site, but there was no follow-up as OG responded immediately following a trio of kills from Valdemar "valde" Bjørn Vangså with a Desert Eagle. Natus Vincere never found themselves in the game after that, picking up only one more round before the map came to an end.
s1mple opened up the action on Overpass with a quad-kill to put NAVI in the lead, with the CIS side following that up with the next two rounds for a solid 3-0 start. The shape of the game changed dramatically once OG had money in the bank as Aleksi "Aleksib" Virolainen's troops tightened up and gradually took the upper hand. NAVI were often betrayed by the clock and, for the most part, struggled to impose their will as they ended the half chasing a three-round deficit.
Things went from bad to worse for NAVI after the break as they fell further behind after losing the opening rounds, but they took control of proceedings after getting their economy under control. Boombl4's charges shut out the OG offense with a near-flawless defensive display, winning nine rounds without response to level the series.
Natus Vincere got off to a flying start to their T side on Dust2 and tore the OG apart defense during the early stages of the game. Aleksib put his team on the board after denying a 1v3 clutch from s1mple, but the Ukrainian was unfazed by the setback as he went 22-7 in the half to lead NAVI to a commanding 11-4 lead.
Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt kept OG in the game with a trio of p250 frags in the B tunnels, setting the team up for a 3-0 start to the half. NAVI responded with guns in hand and strung three rounds together, but then their defense began to crumble. OG went on a dominant run and brought the deficit to a minimum before Egor "flamie" Vasilyev stepped up to the plate with five frags in two rounds to take NAVI through the finish line.
