ESL One: Road to Rio groups revealed

ESL has revealed the groups and the complete schedule for the upcoming ESL One: Road to Rio tournament series.

Kicking off on April 22 in Europe and in the Americas (April 30 in the CIS and May 6 in Asia and Oceania), ESL One: Road to Rio will be a series of online tournaments held globally with a Valve-sponsored prize pool of $255,000.

Besides the prize money, teams will also compete for Regional Major Ranking (RMR) points, which will be used to determine the participants at this year's ESL One Rio Major. This will be the first of two RMR Series, the second of which will be held later in the year, between the player break and October 18 as HLTV.org recently revealed.

f0rest to face his old team of NiP of ESL One: Road to Rio

In Europe, North America, Asia and the CIS, teams have been split into two round-robin groups featuring a best-of-three match format. In Europe, the top four teams from both groups will progress to a double-elimination bracket (top two to the upper bracket and the next two to the lower bracket), while in North America and in the CIS, the top three finishers will advance to a single-elimination bracket. In Asia, only the top two sides will move on to the playoffs.

In the other two regions, South America and in Oceania, the teams will square off in a round-robin stage, with the first-placed side advancing to the final and the next two to a semi-final match.

Their are in a pretty bad form, not going into the playoffs of the pro league after losing to MIBR who isn't a great team. I mean, on lan they would take that spot easily, but online makes me worried as I like them as a team.

Yeah, I wonder too on which basis the decision making this is about. There is no logic ranking wise. May be it's about BIG not being qualified for RIO? Thought some cards had been shuffled so other teams who have no chance for the missing second Major get a chance ? At least it explains BIG underperformance in the recent HSH Cup Pt2.

Ohh god! Just unite the eu and cis groups, make a little less slots, expand the prize pool pluses (+): 1) competition - the European region will become stronger 2) much more absolutely mediocre teams will be eliminated - only stronger will go to the tournament 3) the prize pool will increase 4) they will finally begin to try and work out their salary minuses (-): 1) ping 2) ???

I mean, they are weak, they are not a good team, they don't have a good amount of firepower, but i think there is no better candidates for that place than North.
2020-04-18 13:07
Sorry i've been out of the loop for some time, but how were the teams participating decided? Was there a qualifier? Or did they just invite based on rankings? Why aren't teams like HAVU, BIG and OG there? Did they fail a qualifier? EDIT: Ah i see, they based it on the minor qualifier while also giving spots to the teams from the last major. Imo they should have given invites to the legends and challengers, but had a closed qualifier for the remaining spots. Especially because of the new system that makes them gain RMR points
