FURIA remain undefeated in Road to Rio with win over Liquid
FURIA now boast a 4-0 record in the group and only a domestic matchup against MIBR stands in their way of ending this stage with a perfect 15 points. Liquid, meanwhile, have dropped down to fourth in the group, with just two victories from four matches, and may not make the playoffs even if they beat Yeah in their final clash, on Sunday.
The clash between FURIA and Liquid was noticeably one-sided as the series got underway, with the Brazilian side dominating on their pick of Vertigo with a 16-5 win. A third map looked to be on the cards as Liquid led at the onset of their pick of Inferno, but FURIA's abuse of the B site ultimately allowed Andrei "arT" Piovezan to lead his troops to victory, 16-13.
A triple kill from Vinicius "VINI" Figueiredo kicked things off for FURIA on the Terrorist side of their map pick, Vertigo, and although a force-buy response came in from Liquid in round two, an immediate answer from FURIA swung momentum back in the Brazilians' favour. Continuous abuse of the North American side's A site defense left them with few rounds to their name, with triple kills from Russel "Twistzz" Van Dulken and Nick "nitr0" Cannella being key in Liquid garnering a meager four rounds by the break.
Any comeback hopes that Liquid housed were quickly dashed as three USP-S frags from Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato kept FURIA in control following the side swap. From there, arT's troops wasted little time in closing out the map, to move the series onward to Inferno.
Liquid seemed a revitalized side as their pick got underway, taking seven of the first eight rounds to immediately put FURIA on the back foot. It took a triple kill from Yuri "yuurih" Santos and a 1vs2 clutch from KSCERATO to get the Brazilian squad their second, but it was there that they managed to stabilize as arT took down four in the ensuing round to break Liquid's economy, leading to an 8-7 half in favour of the North Americans.
Keith "NAF" Markovic and Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski's combined efforts were not enough to help Liquid recover a 3vs5 B site retake following the side swap, allowing FURIA to take the lead for the first time on Inferno at 9-8. A back-and-forth brawl for control following the first gun round gave Liquid a chance as they came out ahead, leading 12-10, but the lack of banana control in the following rounds and the fast pace from FURIA gave arT and company the space they needed to rally back and take the win.
