Astralis defeat Heretics to take ESL One: Road to Rio Group A lead

Astralis beat Heretics in a two-map affair, on Dust2 and Inferno, to claim the top spot in ESL One: Road to Rio's Group A with just two matches left in the round-robin stage.

Astralis took down NiP, their top competitor in Group A, in their previous ESL One: Road to Rio fixture, and have now defeated another direct competitor, Heretics, to cement their position atop the group as they head into their last two matches of the stage against Dignitas and ENCE, two of the teams currently sitting low on the table.

The match between the Danes and the Frenchmen was key in their fight for one of the two spots in the upper-bracket semi-finals, and although Heretics looked strong on the first halves of both maps, winning them 8-7 and 9-6, it was Astralis who were able to bring it home one-sidedly in the second halves on both occasions.

gla1ve put in a strong performance on Inferno despite a shaky start

Astralis were quick to establish a 4-0 lead on the attack on Dust2, but a big play from Bryan "Maka" Canda who clutched a 1vs1 stiuation against Nicolai "device" Reedtz to retake the B site in a three-kill round put Heretics on the board. From there on out the French team were able to win seven more rounds to take the lead at the half, 8-7.

On the Terrorist side, Astralis were quick to show their superiority, winning the pistol round and a 5vs5 retake in the first gun round to go up 10-8. Heretics were able to then win two rounds, but only getting two kills across both they were unable to hurt Astralis’ economy, who cruised on to close out the first map 16-10.

Heretics won a 5vs4 B retake on Inferno to inaugurate the proceedings on Astralis’ map. Just like the Danes had done on the CT side of Dust2, it was now the French team making strides on the defense, starting off 7-0 with Maka going 12-2. Astralis were able to draw some blood, but ended up trailing 6-9 at the switch.

Astralis kept bridging the gap by winning the pistol round before tying it up in the first gun round, and were far superior on the defending side, giving up but one round before match point and four in total for a 16-12 victory.

Yes. Astralis beat NiP and as the rules are, when even points, direct wins trumps....

No, I believe NiP is number one in that group, this is a bad misleading title! Didn't even wait for the NiP game to finnish before publishing SMH. Even though I am biased to NiP, I still think it's wrong!

Do you really think that this lineup can be better than they are now? They have Maka and Nivera carrying two deadweights, their run is a fluke. Maka, Nivera and Lucky won't be able to win 3vs5 in all matches.
