Astralis confirm JUGi signing

Astralis have completed the signing of former North AWPer Jakob "JUGi" Hansen, the Danish organisation announced on Monday.

The 23-year-old joins Astralis on a free transfer after being released by North last month, and increases the roster to six players, with Patrick "es3tag" Hansen due to join the team once his Heroic contract runs out, at the end of June.

JUGi has already taken part in a practice session with his new teammates, in which he "adapted and contributed as we expected", according to team coach Danny "zonic" Sørensen. He is no stranger to Astralis' methodology, having played some of his best Counter-Strike under Heroic (average 1.17 rating) when both teams were owned by RFRSH Entertainment.

JUGi will ultimately become "the 7th member of the roster", Astralis say

He struggled to produce the same level of form in his next two teams, OpTic and North, the latter of which moved him to the bench in January to make way for Mathias "MSL" Lauridsen. Now that he is once again working with the same performance team, JUGi is hoping to rediscover his spark and prove his doubters wrong.

"It feels like coming home," JUGi told Astralis' website. "To be honest, I was really nervous, but the second I stepped into the office, everything felt just right. The group has grown a lot, but I know most of the guys around the team, I know the culture and I know what is expected of me - on and off the server. I’ve had some great times here and being able to wear the jersey with the red star on the chest is just… It’s a pressure, it’s humbling and it’s motivating as nothing else!

"I’ve not been as consistent in my performance as I want to be, but I know what I can do under the right conditions and luckily so do Kasper Hvidt and Danny. Also, I will play with a group of incredibly skilled players on a team where the combined performance is always in focus, which is something I’ve missed at times."

Kasper Hvidt, Astralis' Director of Sports, admits that these changes may lead to "fluctuating results" at first, but stresses that the end goal is to build "an even stronger Astralis now and in the many years to come." He also adds that the organisation wants to have two players who can fill every role in the team.

JUGi could make his first official appearance for Astralis in DreamHack Masters Spring, which will kick off in just a week's time. Later this month, the Danish giants, who returned to the No.1 spot in the world rankings last week, will also compete in the BLAST Premier Spring Europe Showdown, in which four spots in the European Finals will be on offer.

Astralis now have:

Denmark Nicolai "device" Reedtz
Denmark Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen
Denmark Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth
Denmark Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander
Denmark Emil "Magisk" Reif
Denmark Jakob "JUGi" Hansen

i wouldnt consider it a secondary team it always used to happen back in cod, just a another team under the org to compete and practice against

True but the entire team is a mess. Not all of the blame for that can be placed on JUGi alone. Kjaerbye has fallen from the top-level form he had when he was brought on and I feel the only people really playing at a top level consistently right now are aizy and MSL. They brought MSL back to fix their internal issues since he's the one who built the team from the beginning. JUGi probably struggled partly because of the team's issues, and I think it could have been worked out with a good coach and IGL.
2020-05-11 13:34

I only watch them when they are facing a team I enjoy, but I think there's a lot of value in their games. They obviously have a big psychological issue as their problems obviously don't stem from the players being bad. I think they hoped bringing MSL back would solve it but so far it hasn't.
2020-05-11 15:29
I fully agree that the team was a mess, but JUGI was just way too inconsistent. As the awper, the team placed a lot of faith/resources every game on JUGI. He uses the most expensive gun that is relevant in Tier 1 CS. If you're an awper, you really need to be finding impact with that gun. JUGI was just way too inconsistent, and therefore many games he would inadvertedly destroy his own teams economy, especially on CT sides, by dying constantly with the awp. Kjaerbye is also inconsistent, but much more consistent than JUGI was. Kjaerbye for 3 months towards the end of last year was looking like a top 15/20 player in the world. He has dropped off since, but I do believe that MSL can once again get better form out of kjaerbye. I feel that gade or cajunb has to go if north want to once again become a top 10 team. The problem is that I cant see a player like Bubzkji or sjuuush or acor leaving Mad lions for north atm. Cajunb has more experience than gade, but I do feel he's a little bit washed up in a sense. Maybe picking up someone like Farlig from CPH flames, or stavn from Heroic would be a good shout.

I'm not denying JUGi having poor performance but I think it stems from other issues. There's a clear difference between the gameplay of someone like s1mple when they are doing well and doing poorly. Part of the reason NaVi were looking so stronk at the start of this year was because they had wind in their sails, s1mple was looking calm and collected and that's when he performs best. Yesterday, versus Hard Legion, he looked very frustrated (at least on Dust 2) and he wasn't putting up the same numbers. I'm thinking the same might be true for JUGi. Obviously it was his own psychological issues that made him inconsistent but some of those issues probably could be solved with a good coach, analyst, psychologist or IGL. Astralis have all four of those. I think there's a lot of potential for him in Astralis, more so than in North.
2020-05-11 15:33
I'd disagree with you big time. JUGI looked at his best in tricked and Heroic. In tricked, he would always be playing against T2/T3 teams. Heroic rarely attended the really big LANs, for example JUGI never played in a major for heroic as they could never qualify. During his time at Optic and North, where he did attend the vast majority of the big events, he looked bang average. There are definitely psychological issue present, but I think the biggest issue is just hism playstyle is very easy for the top awpers to counter. I personally can't see JUGI getting much game time on Astralis. In devve, Astralis have one of the best awpers, and riflers, in the world. JUGI cannot compete with devve. Maybe JUGI might play in the smaller events, such as Blast events, but there is no way Astralis will be taking JUGI to the big events over devve. Theoretically, they could have both Jugi and devve in the team, but then they would have to sacrifice their support or the entry fragger, which makes little sense IMO, as having JUGI on the awp and devve as an entry/support makes very little sense.

True, true. I'm stoked to see how this all develops regardless. Also, the change is made due to fatigue in the team. They don't wanna swap JUGi for device because device would be worse for any reason, but rather because he doesn't get time to recover as well as medical conditions that make some longer travels impossible. They aren't saying JUGi is better than device, but rather that they are hoping he can be the second best thing when device is unavailible.
2020-05-11 15:43
I understand that, but it seems like a poor move on JUGI's behalf. He's essentially like a second goalkeeper in soccer, not good enough to be on the main team, he's a back up in case the best player is injured. True, he's a member of one of the best teams in CSGO, but he'll rarely get playing. Goes to show that money must have been the main motive behind this move. Heroic are looking for players atm for example, he'd have been able to play every game for heroic. It goes to show that he's happy to play a game here and there for a big paycheck, when he could be playing all the time, get super fucking motivated and improve. I can't see much improvement coming from a player that won't be playing official matches that often. I could be wrong, time will tell, but it just seems like a poor career move for JUGI.

Also possible. We'll just have to see how it goes the first time he's fielded. I doubt it will be in Dreamhack Masters since they qualified with their main roster, but perhaps we'll see him fielded in BLAST?

I think gla1ve and magisk is the only two, who aint gonna rotate. I hope they dont fuck up the most consistent team in csgo. Imagine making major changes when you are #1 rank and defending major champions. I think it’s gonna blow up in their faces, with some miserable results. I hope it dont.

Why not giving a try at Jugi? He's hungry to show he still has what it takes, just as magisk was. He used to be good back in Heroic when they were sharing ressources with astralis' parent company so maybe that may be what he needs. And if he fails, at least they did not have to buy him out. Also, he's gonna be more humble considering it might be his last chance at top flight CS, he might be more inclined to be on a rotation than a guy like farlig who's on the rise. Just my two cents of course, maybe none of this extended roster thing will work out in the end but I'm eager to see if it yields results. Astralis is lucky enough to bring players in a working system and not to try to save a team, they have time to make it work.

"more players, more sponsor assets. offload shit from the main 5 on and off the server for more longevity and more money" "I know it's a scene-wide problem that there are too many tournaments and too many sponsors. offloading the main five for lower-tier tournaments frees them up to do better sponsorship deals, and I wouldn't be surprised if the main five have complained and bought into the idea" Doing it for the money and more rests for the core players. Astralis = snakes

Looks like they are hoping, that they can Substitute Players in the next time. Like in Football, if you Need new Energy, bring esetag or Jugi in the 2nd half.
2020-05-11 14:55
The future. CS:GO will eventually become more professional yet when teams aren't restricted to just 5 players. If a player gets sick or has visa problems, it means the team doesn't have to use a coach or some outside player nobody knows, and who doesn't know the strats.

Yeah but in CSGO teamwork and chemistry play huge role, for many teams it is hard to make 5 players work well together. I just cannot imagine casually changing players between tournaments, it is just too big of a change to work
2020-05-12 04:01
They're not the first team to try it and won't be the last. They must think it's workable. If all members of a team know the plays and practice frequently with each other, it's just a matter of getting that practice in, just like larger team sports, like football.
2020-05-12 18:05
But the amount of work put into practice will multiply in case of more players than 5 if you want some flexibility in roles, and for what? For occasional swap of players when one is feeling under the weather? I do not think it is worth it and certainly not many teams will risk it, some do not have enough time to practice with 5 players. We will see, and I might eat my words later but I see this as a dead end.

Most of the organizations don't have resources to add substitute players to their rosters. Because of that I think that's very unlikely that the next tournaments will allow them to sign more than 5 players.

No. They want 2-3 players in the team that can jump in when they need a break. Device got health issues etc etc.

They are getting substitutes for their players nothing else. They are afraid that their players can't travel and play that much due to health concerns thats why they are adding their substitutes to the team. It won't be a suprise if we see Astralis competing in all tournaments of the year....Core Astralis in bigger and major events and Astralis with these substitutes in smaller events. Easy money everywhere! Masterplan indeed.

atralis plan to create a 10 man roster, where they knit pick 5 other players they want to be in a team with, so they can hold #1 #2 respectively and practice against themselves, essentially making all training in house 10mans to develop faster than the majority of teams.

«He also adds that the organisation wants to have two players who can fill every role in the team.» So Danmark is doing as Norway? Building two teams og same org/team funded by the government? Note: Nordavind is sponsored by State-run compaines, like DNB, Telenor, etc. And have two Teams. Nordavind International and Nordavind National.

perhaps developing two teams? who knows.. maybe in 6 moths they'll have 10 players and can swap players in rosters when things get stale.
2020-05-11 20:39
pls astralis sign me
2020-05-11 21:33
I'm still confused as to why Astralis picked up es3tag and JuGi. Both of them are good players, but who are they "replacing"? Is Astralis just going to sub in these 2 players for whoever they feel like / whoever is burnt out?
2020-05-11 22:25
I read a comment from Nikolaj Nyholm (their CEO) who said that ESL tournaments would allow for swapping players in between maps, From the ESL rules: "Players can be changed at any time but the opposing Team has to be informed sufficiently in advance. If necessary the game can be paused (see rule Usage of Pause function below). This change shall not take more than five (5) minutes. If the Player has not joined, or cannot be replaced within five (5) minutes after the pause has started, the match will count as forfeited for the Team changing the Player." Source: pro.eslgaming.com/fileadmin/user_upload/.. It's from 2018 but afaik that specific rule (page 14, rule 7.12) is still the same today.
2020-05-11 23:37
Ah okay, thank you very much for the explanation and providing the link for the rule. It makes a little more sense to me, but I'm still used to the whole 5v5 aspect of CSGO where the same 5 players on each team plays for the whole series of a match (BO3, BO5, etc.).
2020-05-11 23:45
What's more interesting to me is how a team can keep 7 players going and stay on point. I mean, practice sessions and scrims have to be changed somehow or something? I don't get it.
2020-05-12 00:04
Well, I guess we'll see how this goes. It seems like only the richest organizations can afford to try to transition CSGO into the realm of physical professional sports (Football, Soccer, Basketball, Baseball, etc.).
2020-05-12 00:08
AGO has a 10 man squad afaik. But 2x5 makes more sense than 7

CS is just so boring these days, HLTV happy that they will be able to rank astralis as 1 for more years
2020-05-13 12:48
Kasper Hvidt (Sports Director, Astralis): (...) (...) He is saying that when you look at Jugi’s stats in Heroic they were similar (not The same) to those of Device’s and that Jugi’s situation is somewhat similar to that of Magisk, before Magisk joined Astralis, and now Magisk is considered a top10 player in The World ... Bottomline, Astralis never do anything that hasnt been considered carefully and everyone, including The players were in on this and agreed ... a 7 man roster or up 10 man roster Will enable Astralis to compete in pretty much most of The tournaments in CSGo without having to face severe “burn-out” in their players due to a packed schedule ... In a few years you Will most likely see alot of The top10 teams trying to do The same ...
2020-05-13 16:25
That is an insult towards device hltv.org/stats/players/8783/JUGi?startDa.. hltv.org/stats/players/7592/device?start.. The 7-8 player roster (or more) might be a good idea - even a great new meta - but JUGi is not at device's level - not even close. Many of the matches where JUGi had a high ranking he was surpassed by teammates. device usually tops the scoreboard
