Astralis send G2 to lower bracket in ESL One: Road to Rio

Astralis are through to the upper bracket final in the RMR tournament after putting up a solid all-round performance against G2.

The Danish team lived up to their No.1 ranking as they dispatched their French opponents in quick fashion to set up an upper bracket final clash with FaZe on Friday. Astralis, who extended their winning streak to six matches, four of which by a 2-0 scoreline, were in control for most of the series, even on Vertigo, where they made a comeback from 8-12 down to pick up a narrow victory that all but confirmed their place in the next stage.

G2's strategy relied on taking the series to three maps, and once their map pick went Astralis' way they knew the match was almost over. Overpass was a one-way street as the Danes ran all over their opponents, with Nicolai "device" Reedtz ending the map just one frag shy of a 30-bomb, showing glimpses of his best form just two days after the organisation signed another AWPer, Jakob "JUGi" Hansen, as their backup player.

The French side, who were coming off a surprise defeat to North in the last round of the group stage, made a slow start to the game on Vertigo, forcing Nemanja "nexa" Isaković to call a tactical pause at 2-3 after his team had twice failed to string rounds together. Astralis were able to capitalise on those mistakes, strolling to a 6-2 lead, but then G2 gradually took the upper hand to go into the break down by just one, though it could have been a completely different story had nexa not pulled off a miraculous 1v3 clutch in the 14th round.

device led the charge for his team against G2

The French team carried that late momentum into the second half and built a solid lead after chaining five rounds together. But the rest of the half was controlled by Astralis, who dictated the pace of the game - immediately bouncing back after losing an anti-eco round that could have revitalized the Frenchmen - en route to a 16-13 victory.

François "AMANEK" Delaunay opened up the action on Overpass with a 1v2 clutch in the pistol round, setting G2 up for a 3-0 lead. Their joy would be short-lived, though, as the tone of the game changed once both teams had money in the bank. Any round that G2 won was immediately traded back by Astralis, who went into the break up 10-5, led by device and Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen, the latter of whom had endured a frustrating performance on Vertigo.

G2 looked down and out as the second half began, and Astralis were unwilling to take pity on their opponents. The French team could only muster three rounds before Astralis locked down the map, with device ending the game in style as he picked up the final two frags after putting his team on series point with an ace.

Shhh he thinks winning katowice once and being mcp cz his team performed incredibly well means he is the best, most stacked player ever....cz it was arguably the most stacked tourney But all the wins of the astralis or lets say fnatic boys back in the day dont matter to him cz s1mple won one tournament and then bumped out of tier 3 cis groups lmao Navi played so bad there I saw the games, incredible

yep lol by this sense device is greatest by far. We really don't take fluke runs into account. Everyone from mouz,EG,Liquid,G2 had same fluke runs like Na'vi. Once they build up a team and hit their peak they were unstoppable but after they got read by their opposition, they're back to normal. Except all of them look top 10 team atleast while Na'vi looks straight up tier 3 team.

HA! Thanx, man! I could make a loooong speech on the subject, but will try not to. Disagreement is NOT THE SAME as being enemies! Let's scream and yell at each other, sing and dance, bring the banners and funny hats to the stadiums (hopefully soon), but it's supposed to be a party! Not a fight. Unfortunately we are not taught in school about sincerity or respect for a worthy opponent or anyone else for that matter, and it seems that (possibly) the younger audience in here think that the losing team is suddenly "bots and clowns" with "fix- or laugh threads" ... Absolutely hopeless. All the best to you and friends and French cs as well: THREE teams in the playoffs isn't too shabby! 😎👍

+1 I feel like every time a player or a team makes a mistake, suddenly they are bots and need 'fixing'. In every other competitive sport, people would say: "Oh, he is having a bad day", but in CS, it is like you need to be perfect everytime to be taken seriously. I cannot imagine the stress players must feel when they have a negative K/D and they know the whole world is watching and judging your every move. It is okay to root for your team and shit-talk the other a bit, but to clown teams everytime they lose a match, I think is unnecessary.

Exactly! There was even a "-Dupreeh thread" yesterday ... (anchor on Vertigo B ... try that out, if you're bored one day!) despite his rating at the end was higher than G2's. We ALL have ups'n'downs in life, we all make mistakes. The difference is, that THEIR mistakes are broadcasted on live tv! Yours and mine are not. And yes: I saw an interview with Caspar Vidt, manager in Astralis. He mentioned this gigantic pressure, you're talking about, and of course the +5 man roster is aimed at dealing with that. (I like your username btw: THAT was epic! 😎)

+1 Totally agree. The sports needs lots of good teams as good teams competing is what makes for fun matches to watch. And some rivalry is fine, but it can be friendly one and respecting opponents for their skill is a must in my book. Same thing as for respecting their fans.

And won that 4n2 (wasn’t that a swing round) G2 prolly had in mind the 2-1 anyway. The way they lost vertigo was heartbreakin and they would have lost nuke anywho. Dunno wats up with nexa’s score, felt like he was a beast.
