Astralis move JUGi into starting lineup as gla1ve takes medical leave

Jakob "JUGi" Hansen has been moved into Astralis' starting lineup as in-game leader Lukas "gla1ve" Rossander is taking a leave of absence due to medical reasons, the Danish organisation announced on Tuesday.

gla1ve will be out of action for the next three months on advice from his doctor and from Astralis' Sports Director, Kasper Hvidt, after complaining of symptoms of stress and burnout for a long time.

This means that JUGi, who officially joined Astralis last week, will be playing for the team at least until Patrick "es3tag" Hansen becomes a permanent member of the roster on July 1 following the expiry of his contract with Heroic.

JUGi will make his Astralis debut on Tuesday

gla1ve will sit out at least DreamHack Masters Spring and BLAST Premier Europe Showdown, the team's next two tournaments. It is currently unclear who will be calling the shots in his absence, with Mr. Hvidt having recently told HLTV.org that the team had "more potential co-IGLs" in case the 24-year-old needed to be rested.

"For a long time, we have worked with Lukas and the team to minimize the tasks inside and outside of the game," Astralis' Sports Director said. "This has helped, but unfortunately, it has not been enough for him to avoid going on leave.

"I know that there are many players out there in situations similar to Lukas’ and though you might say we should have taken this step a long time ago, it is my hope that we can avoid a similar situation in the future.

"I am obviously looking forward to having Lukas back 100%, but right now he needs to rest. We will support him in any and all ways possible."

JUGi, who has been out of action since January, will make his debut for Astralis later on Tuesday against his old team of Heroic as the world No.1 squad begin their DreamHack Masters Spring journey. The online tournament will run from May 19 through June 14 and will have $160,000 on offer.

The Danish team have been gathered in Copenhagen since Monday for a bootcamp together with the organisation's performance staff and will be playing their DreamHack matches from the main office.

Astralis will field the following roster in their next two tournaments:

Denmark Nicolai "device" Reedtz
Denmark Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen
Denmark Andreas "Xyp9x" Højsleth
Denmark Emil "Magisk" Reif
Denmark Jakob "JUGi" Hansen

In 2018 when he played for @Optic Gaming I would say he was at least very consistent. Not a monster I will admit, but who knows what #1Astralis can do with him. Magisk wasn't a monster in Optic either before he joined the team, but Astralis made him a monster.

I disagree, because in Dignitas he wasn't considered one of Denmarks Tier one talents. Sure he was a great player and no stranger to brilliance, but not top notch. I do agree that JUGi isn't on the same level as Magisk prior to his contract with Astralis.

I don't see that happening - it really would not benefit the team a whole lot to put one of the best AWP players on a rifle. I think so, many of us work to hard and / or take on to much of a responsibility. The worst part is that it can damaged your mental ability and change your personality. I personally became a single dad and work a big debt off at the same time, that was to much. I can imagine that being a cs go pro on that level for so long can be quite hard mentally.

You don't seem to know what a burnout is and what it entails. It's massively different from stress in all forms.
2020-05-19 14:00
You have to take into consideration that they are esports athletes, people who have spent most of their childhood and teenage years playing video games at home. They are not used to hard work, as instead of working long days with school or job assignments, they have played video games and probably haven't really cared about studies/work. So they typically belong to the lazier, less productive group of people in our socities. You know, the people who, without the video game, would be more or less loosers with low level of education and low tier job (like eg. your typical factory worker with no studies in engineering/financial management/economics). Traditional athletes are often the same when it comes to education/work, but at least they have systematically trained for 15+ years. Having had like 4-6 days a week of practice under a coach/other strong authority since like 12 year old, they are used to putting up the work to meet expectations set within the team. Now all of a sudden esport athletes are actually expected to work as much as people in high tier positions in the traditional fields of work, with their annual travel days exceeding 200. I can easily see how that can burn out a person, especially a young adult with little to no experience in stress management.

How many players seem strong outside the game (physically)? Look at their pictures, maybe 5-10% are relatively fit. It's pretty common for CS players to look like pale ghosts with no muscle definition whatsoever. It's not specific to Astralis.

Obviously, every untrained person would get rekt by a pro fighter. I didn't mean the average CS:GO pro against a pro UFC fighter, I meant imagine them fighting anybody, in general. People from other (actual) sports train and move, so of course they are in way better shape than e-sport 'athletes'. These guys sit behind a PC for a job, and I would imagine many as a hobby. Of course they are going to be physically fucked up.

why not make the best out of this situation: online cs means the igl can become the coach, the igl can take a long break, the star awper can take a long break and when the major will finally happen (most likely there will be another qualifier anyway as I doubt brazil will be hosting live events with crowds by november) the good players can come back in shape

so what is it actually like in Europe guys? I know on the news people say the economy is re-opening. But is it really? Do you notice friends & family are still afraid to go out etc2? Or it's almost normal now?

Most ppl dont give a fuck about others sadly....in the beginning everyone was scared but rn i feel like ppl are not aware that the virus is still around and come Back even worse....some friends are not scared at all, some are still too scared....its a mix But yeah most stuff is open but there are rules, at least in theory, about keeping proper distance and wearing masks....thats for my country
2020-05-19 11:08
3 replies
the problem is that too many people don't wear masks and don't really care.
2020-05-19 11:16

Masks are discouraged by authorities in Denmark for the general public. Works great so far without them. Not saying they can't help - but research show they statistically won't help reduce infection if people are not trained in the proper usage.
2020-05-19 13:07
cuz those masks do shit xD
2020-05-19 14:22
I would say 50/50. Economy is re-opening but, here in Portugal, things like cafés and restaurants can only have around 30% total occupation (if the place has space for 150 people only 50 can get in) and mask is mandatory in public closed spaces. The thing is economy re-opening is different from country to country (I don't want to make the separation north/south but I have to) since southern countries depend on the summer/holiday season to make most of their money. And again, here in Portugal 50% of people will say it is nothing and it's all good from now on and the other 50% will be afraid and will continue to take extra care. But I believe that in countries like, Germany, Denmark, Austria the so called "second wave" will be nothing like the first one however, in Spain, Portugal... I have my doubts. (an opinion from someone from another country would be nice since we see things differently)
2020-05-19 11:31
2 replies
In Denmark, the authorities are confident a possible second wave will be "nipped in the bud" so to speak, as testing should work much better this time around. Hopes and expectations are that a lock down wont be necessary.
2020-05-19 12:50
We will maybe react better to a 2nd wave, it will hit countries where pplale holidays a lot mote if it comes imo but keep in mind the ppl also come back again to their foreign countries...
2020-05-19 15:08
Denmark was never fully shut down. People were allowed to go to work, if there was less than 10 people and a distance of 2 meters could be upheld. Although working from home was encouraged. Public employees in non-critical jobs were sent home, and day cares were closed (forcing a lot of parents to stay home) as well as schools and educational institutions. Restaurants, bars etc were closed too as well as hairdressers, tattoo studios and that kind of businesses requiring close contact. Restaurants and bars have been allowed to open recently. (Observing some regulations about distance and number of people). Day cares opened almost a month ago. Schools are opening too. I've been back at work (office job) for a few weeks already. We still observe a bit more distance and disinfect our hands frequently. Mostly normal apart from that. I do think a proportion of the population is still "scared". I think it's tightly coupled to age (and possibly how close one is to someone in high risk). But I also think there is an urge to get out and get back. So the two groups for a while might make up for each other. I've heard bars were well visited on opening nights at any rate :) I feel everyone is interested in keeping the virus down and helping to do it, but there are different opinions as to what that takes. The public recommendations are down to 1 meters distance, wash hands often, do more cleaning - and avoid gatherings of more than 10 people. People take these more lightly now, than they did - but most still observe these to some degree.
2020-05-19 12:21

I see a lot of similarities with what was done in Portugal, the major differences are now on the "re-opening". I am still working from home, did the test I am waiting the result, hopefully next week I am back. Lots of companies are still on lay-off for one more month, schools will not re-open this year exception for 11th and 12th grades. Day cares opened this week, but most parents stayed at home with their kids.
2020-05-19 13:28
it's not normal, but there is less less panic like it was on the beginning ppl go to shops but in masks #205 pretty accured in Poland as well
2020-05-19 14:24
Actually it is old meta
2020-05-19 10:56

This is isn't unexpected but rather sooner than one would think. Obviously getting more players in the roster would meant they would field them in the games and someone would have to sit out but hearing that Jugi has been with then for just a week and pretty sure wouldn't have practiced with them either, it's unexpected in that case.

2020-05-19 11:10
bet he just wanted time to craft some 200iq strats for the upcoming ESL One: Cologne and Major so he can catch other teams off guard.. Jokes aside, health always priority, not easy task to be a great IGL and can still frag as good as he does. Get well soon...

2020-05-19 11:21

"How is the ranking calculated? All of that is predicated around a 3-man core each team is required to have in order to retain their past points." Why wonder when it says clearly on rankings page
2020-05-19 11:28
1 reply
if you havent read the article about ranking then i can tell you now: after a lineup shift the points from old team is only kept 80% (1 replaced) or 60% (2 replaced). "All of that is predicated around a 3-man core each team is required to have in order to retain their past points." means if you replaced 3 or more players then you will restart with 0 points.
2020-05-19 11:42
The end.
2020-05-19 11:24
This standin system is actually great to preserve the longevity of rosters, without it situations such as these would cause a permanent roster change. I wonder if the eras of long-running teams such as old NIP and VP could've been extended if the players were given an opportunity to blow off steam for a while.
2020-05-19 11:24
Why is Danish players so weak? Device Gla1ve Kjaerbye Dupreeh? Welp I guess Sweden have wrist injury on olaf and gtr having his shit while we also have fewer pros.

Gla1ve job is the hardest in CS. This dude has to spends hours watching demos, finding new utility spots for strats, scrims and then has to work on his own game... then he has a personal life to consider. They get a couple of weeks off and then its straight back into CS nearly every week which all of the above starts again.

2020-05-19 12:14
Gla1ves issues have been known to the team for some time, so they signed es3tag to help relieve. Apparently the issues was so serious that they had to relieve right now, and Jugi might not be the best option for a 7th player, but he could start from day one. And it seems thats what was needed. Stress is not to be kidding with... If Gla1ve have clinical stress and burn out, three months might not be enough. Get well soon, Lukas

It will be dev1ce and zonic taking charge, I have almost no doubt about that. I think they hope for es3tag to take over the IGL role, in fact I am pretty sure that is what is going to happen. es3tag has a perfect "team before anyone else" mentality.

Sitting down for long period has a negative effect on your body, specifically your abdominal section.
2020-05-19 16:12
Travelling A LOT (easily 200 days a year away from home, friends and loved ones), extremely long days of work that require high level of concentration most of the time, stress of delivering results and meeting expectations (your own goals, objectives defined by the organization etc). I can easily see how that could burn out a person, especially a young adult who, as your pointed out, "merely" plays a video game for a living (indicating he is not used to putting up huge amounts of work unlike for example those seeking traditional high tier jobs and careers).
