BIG top DreamHack Masters Spring Group B; mousesports eliminated in last place

BIG beat Complexity to end the DreamHack Masters Spring group stage with a clean 3-0 record and secure a spot in the playoffs' upper bracket, while MAD Lions took mousesports out of the running in a two-map series.

DreamHack Masters Spring 2020 - Europe’s Group B came down to the wire on the last day of play, as the two fixtures of the day would decide who topped the group to get the upper bracket seeding in the playoffs and who would finish in last place and therefore be eliminated from the competition. The first match, between BIG and Complexity, was for first place, and it was the German side that was able to secure the coveted upper bracket playoff berth coming out on top in a three map series, sending their rivals to the lower bracket.

The second match of the day was played between the two 0-2 teams, MAD Lions and mousesports, and after winning their map pick, Inferno, quite comfortably, the Danes went on to take Train as well to sweep Finn "karrigan" Andersen and his men, knocking them out of the tournament and securing their own survival through the playoffs' lower bracket.

BIG are through to the playoffs' upper bracket with a clean sheet

Ismailcan "XANTARES" Dörtkardeş kicked the first series off with a triple in the pistol round on the CT side of Mirage to put BIG ahead, but Benjamin "blameF" Bremer with a triple of his own in the forcebuy brought it back even. As Complexity started to put some distance on the scoreboard, Florian "syrsoN" Rische aced with a saved AK to get his team to 2-4. The German AWPer had an incredible 19-3 half helping BIG lead 9-6 at the half. Six back-and-forth rounds made it 12-10 for BIG, but Complexity were able to push overtime after winning an important eco when down 12-14. The map stayed close during the first overtime, which ended in another stalemate, but a strong attacking side by Complexity gave them the 1-0 lead after a clean sweep in the second overtime, 22-18.

Complexity got a head start on Vertigo, 4-0 on the CT side, but a triple by Johannes "tabseN" Wodarz with two kills from Nils "k1to" Gruhne put BIG on the board, who brought it to 5-5 before swinging the half to an 8-7 lead. Complexity tied it up in the pistol round, but lost to the forcebuy and were unable to bounce back as BIG hit match point, 15-8. blameF was able to clutch a 1vs2 situation to push for a tie, but Complexity fell short in the end, 11-16.

A triple by William "RUSH" Wierzba in the attacking pistol round on Dust2 got Complexity off to a 4-0 start. BIG managed to win the odd round, but they were unable to follow them up, watching Complexity quickly run away with the economic game and going 8-2 after ten rounds played. The German team was finally able to string three in a row, although Complexity hit double digits before the half, 10-5. XANTARES and syrsoN put BIG right back in the match with multikills in the pistol round and the German side worked their way back to a 10-10 scoreline before going on to dominate the half, securing a 16-11 victory to close out the series.

mousesports kicked Inferno off with a pistol round win on the attacking side, but two kills by Rasmus "sjuush" Beck in a 2vs2 afterplant situation tied it up as MAD Lions went on to take a 4-1 lead early on. Two desert eagle entries by Özgür "woxic" Eker made it so mouz could get back on the board on an eco, making it 2-4, but the Danes charged ahead the following round thanks to doubles by Asger "AcilioN" Larsen and Frederik "acoR" Gyldstrand, dominating the rest of the half and giving up just one more round en route to a 12-3 partial scoreline. MAD Lions didn’t let up on the attack, winning the first three rounds to hit match point before closing out the map, 16-5.

mousesports ended the group stage with a 0-3 record

MAD Lions started out ahead on the defending side of Train, taking an early 5-1 lead, although they were set back on the seventh round by Robin "ropz" Kool and David "frozen" Čerňanský, who won a 2vs5 situation. mousesports didn’t quite stabilize after however, losing the following two before each team won three a side to end 10-5 in favor of MAD Lions. The Danes cleared the way by winning the second pistol round, inching closer to series point, and although mouz put up some resistance late in the game they were no match for AcilioN and company, who went on to close out the series, 2-0, to survive in the tournament and move on to the playoffs.
