EG get revenge on MIBR to win BLAST Premier Spring Americas Finals

The North Americans required just two maps to win the grand final after coming from the lower bracket.

Evil Geniuses won the Americas division of the BLAST Premier Spring season following a close 2-0 victory over MIBR, who could not deliver when it mattered most after beating the North Americans twice earlier in the tournament, most recently in Friday's upper bracket final. Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's troops picked up their first title since the StarLadder i-League Season 8, in October, and booked the third spot at the BLAST Global Finals, joining European finalists Complexity and Vitality.

“It isn’t the same feeling as being at an event, on a stage, but it still is a big win for us," Tarik "tarik" Celik said after the match. “We’ve been working really hard, and I think we are all extremely happy with the way that we played at this event. Obviously, the fact that we won against MIBR was really big as well because they had beat us the last three [two] times in a row, so for us to come back and win in the finals means a lot to us."

It means that MIBR missed yet another opportunity to end their trophyless run, which goes back almost two years now, though this defeat will not sting nearly as much as the loss to MAD Lions in the Flashpoint 1 final. The Brazilians showed great intensity and fighting spirit, though fans will certainly lament that the team's biggest stars went missing on Inferno, where Epitacio "TACO" de Melo took over and kept his team in it until the very end with one of the best performances of his career.

"I don’t think he [trk] is feeling the pressure". Fernando "fer" Alvarenga’s comments ahead of the series were put to the test just five rounds into the series as Alencar "trk" Rossato clutched a 1v2 situation to give MIBR their first round on Dust2. It was a much-needed win for the Brazilians, who had been overwhelmed in the opening stages of the game, but their respite wouldn’t last as Evil Geniuses remained in control, powered by Tsvetelin "CeRq" Dimitrov, who racked up 15 kills in the first nine rounds.

EG came from the lower bracket to win BLAST Premier Spring Americas

Things were starting to look desperate for MIBR, but the team finally woke up after calling a timeout, winning the last four rounds of the half to make it a competitive 6-9 scoreline.

Evil Geniuses halted that momentum after switching to the T side as they ran all over the MIBR defense, reaching map point without dropping a single round. With their backs against the wall, the Brazilians dug deep and began to eat away at EG's lead thanks to some stellar AWPing from Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo and Vito "kNgV-" Giuseppe, only to fall at the final hurdle as the North Americans locked down the map just when overtime seemed inevitable.

fer opened up Inferno with a trio of frags to put MIBR in the lead for the first time in the series. The Brazilian team looked the stronger side during the early stages of the map, but then Evil Geniuses ran rampant, winning seven of the last eight rounds of the half, with CeRq sitting on 15 frags and almost 100 ADR.

And then the TACO show began. The 25-year-old, who had ended the first half with only seven frags to his name, picked up a quad-kill in the pistol round to keep MIBR alive. The Brazilian team enjoyed a spell of dominance after that and retook the lead, with EG then responding with a run of their own to reassert their authority.

It looked as though the game was about to come to an end, but TACO once again came to the team's rescue, even picking up a stellar ace on the A site. The final stages of the game were played at a frantic pace, with MIBR taking the game to overtime in the final round of regulation. Their efforts were in vain, though, as EG stepped up into a higher gear in extra rounds to get their hands on the trophy.

Its sad to see a fanboy not seeing what the majority of community (atleast on HLTV) has said that in a bo5 (or bo3 in this case, although a map advantages arent a thing in bo3) a map advantage plus a first pick advantage is insanely OP. Outside of that, if you are shit, a map advantage wont help you anyways, EG outplayed them hard.

Everybody have an opinion, im not a fanboy dawg, im just saying that what fallen said is the truth imo, u see if it was an bo5 i bet complexity wouldnt win the game against vitality, and im wondering, why the NA qualification only have 1 spot, ik that there is not like the amount of teams like Europe. Lets be honest they didnt outplayed them hard, it was a good game, but if u watch the game again u will see so many stupid mistakes by Mibr, EG made a good match but if u think about or watch the game and see thise mistakes they could just win it. Im not saying that EG had luck o smth but they didnt played so good as many people think. Just imo 🤷‍♂️

the fanboy aspect i was basing off your flair, there are pluses and minuses to both of the approaches (having and not having a map advantage). Biggest problem is a double elim brackets in general, but tourney organizers want to milk as much as they can so I guess its the way it will go. Will have to wait for when in HLTV podcast they will discuss this matter with device and what his opinion is on this topic.

I understand ur point of view brotha :D
2020-06-22 22:20
I mean, he's right that EG wasn't penalized (Or them rewarded) for losing already in the winners bracket (I refuse to use that Upper and Lower bracket shit). The reward MiBR got was just playing 1 less match. I get that a 1 map advantage kinda kills the GF, but it's the fair thing to do in a double-elimination bracket. Maybe CS should just stick to single elimination for tournament PO and leave double elimination to tournament qualifiers as a 2nd chance option. Anyway, f*ck MiBR
2020-06-22 11:36

The advadtage of upper bracket final winner is still huge, as he only has to win 1 BO3 for the trophy. The loser has to win 2 BO3, what decreases the chances to win extremly
2020-06-22 13:20
4 replies
That's a wrong way to see it. It's not a matter of how many games does it take you to reach finals. It's a matter of when in finals, who reached clean and who has gotten there thanks to a "2nd chance". MiBR didn't lose prior finals, EG did. Why does MiBR reaching finals doesn't grant them a 2nd chance too if losing for the first time? You're basically telling the team that reach finals through winners that they've never were allowed to miss. And you're telling the team that already missed once that they start grand finals as equal as the team that was perfect. The reward for EG, in this case, should be the fact that they got a 2nd chance to win the tournament. But MiBR deserves a reward too since they didn't need to "use" a 2nd chance to reach finals. The reason why there are tournaments that don't reward the team reaching GF through winners is that they feel 1 map advantage devaluates the thrill of the final, which is understandable, but not fair at all to a team that's been more perfect than other. As I said, do single elimination playoff and problem solve.
2020-06-22 14:05

I disagree
2020-06-22 15:27
2 replies
So you're basically saying that MiBR winning EG once already in bracket play means less than EG victory, just because. They're basically 1-1 in matches, having MiBR beat them first, but somehow EG win has more weight despite coming from losers. MiBR had to beat EG twice to be champions, EG only 1 despite losing before to them. It makes no sense. Look at fighting games. They have double eliminatio too, and the player coming from losers has to win 2 bo5 to claim victory since the player from winners NEVER lost a set prior GF.
2020-06-22 15:59
1 reply
I prefer single elimination too But I don't think it's unfair, the winner of the upper bracket final gets a safe spot in the finals, that's their reward The final is the most important game and should portray who's the better team, so I dislike advantages in generell I understand where you come from but I disagree

EG won with 10x situation on an 4vs3 ou 3vs2, some kind of that situation, Mibr played so bad this series, so many mistakes, EG won the game luckly. Im not mad at all, but i think the mistakes caused the game to Mibr, and when they realised they could win, that was too late. GG
