Heroic take revenge on G2 to reach ESL One Cologne grand final

With a 2-1 win over the world's #4 team, Heroic have reached their second consecutive grand final, building on their DreamHack Open Summer success.

In the third meeting between the two teams this year, and the second in the last week, Heroic managed to take their first victory over G2, 2-1. It was a hard-fought battle as the two sides once again vetoed down to the same three maps — Vertigo, Nuke, and Mirage —, and the initial two going into overtime as neither team was able to close out their map pick.

Finally, Heroic came out guns blazing on Mirage, with Nikolaj "niko" Kristensen's miraculous plays pushing them across the line to take down G2 and reach the grand final of ESL One Cologne, after doing the same in DreamHack Open Summer earlier this month.

Third time was the charm as Heroic take down G2

A clean pistol win for G2 was returned on by Heroic's force buy as the Danes looked strong on the CT side of Vertigo, going up 8-3. Then Audric "JaCkz" Jug stepped up with a double Deagle-entry to add a forth to the French-Serbian team's tally, but more importantly, set them on path of recovery for the half, finishing it 9-6.

Heroic overwhelmed the A site and powered on to B to claim the T-side pistol, extending their lead to 14-8 in no time, but the end of the match was far from near. G2 clawed back as Kenny "kennyS" Schrub came online to help his team equalize the score at 14-14 before Casper "cadiaN" Møller's team pulled out a B execute to reach map point, but Nemanja "nexa" Isaković's well-timed flank pushed the game into overtime.

G2 were looking like the better team throughout the first two sets of added rounds, but ended up getting the short end of the stick, losing their map pick 25-23. A crucial play was René "TeSeS" Madsen's 4K at 18-21, which salvaged a 2v4 situation for his team and allowed Martin "stavn" Lund to power Heroic to the victory with 42 frags.

nexa had a strong showing, but G2's Cologne run was cut short

On Nuke, Heroic got the upper hand early thanks to a successful Vent drop in the pistol (3-0), but kennyS on the AWP showed up strong to push G2 to equalize the scoreline. The action that followed was on the knife's edge, with rounds coming down to the smallest margin, and TeSeS and nexa standing out for their respective sides.

It was Heroic that took a respectable 9-6 lead after their Terrorist side, seeing G2 have to fight back, just like on Vertigo, but now with elimination at stake. In the second pistol, Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač clutched out the 1v2 in the pistol to set his team on road for a comeback as G2 chained with five consecutive rounds. The run was paused by Heroic's low-buy victory, but only shortly, as G2 continued piling on to reach 14-10.

However, Nuke also ended up going to overtime, as stavn showed up with key frags to keep his side afloat. The Danes then took the first added round, but ended up losing the map as huNter- finished off strongly, 32K-21D, to see the action move to Mirage.

Johannes "b0RUP" Borup's Deagle found four frags to earn Heroic the T-side force-buy victory in Mirage, with the 20-year-old rifler displaying strong form with 2 opening kills and three multikill rounds as the Danes went up 5-2 on the decider map. G2's attempt to get back into it were denied by niko, who recorded three multikill rounds in a row, including a 1v4 ace, making it 9-3.

The half was finished 11-4, with a clean B hold edging them closer to victory with 13 rounds to their name. Three in row for G2 gave Damien "maLeK" Marcel's men a lifeline, but two big multikill rounds by b0RUP sealed the deal, concluding Mirage 16-7, 2-1 for the series.

your name literally checks out your flair. Jackz has been insane this tournament. You'd have to be ignorant not to acknowledge that. Kenny has hit some of his nicest shots this year in this tournament. Even tho hunter is, like, legit, one of G2's top fraggers, he has been pretty quiet this tournament. Amanek has a shitty role, but even with that, I agree that he underperformed this tournament.

Go on youtube and look nexa highlights in cologne. U will find 5 times more highlights than jackz had... He is best fragging igl in the game(i dont consider niko as igl so he doesnt count).

Yes, because nexa overall did perform much better in relegation than Jackz did. But still, Jackz did perform so damn good in some key moments that let them get to the semi's. And, let's be real, the "igl's can't perform" has been such a dumb excuse lately. It does not matter who had more frags in the game or in how many maps. The point is to get the match won. If you win a bo3 in 3 games and the both maps that you've won have been 16:14 and the map that you've lost has been 0:16, you have still won the match and u get further. We do not know about how much effort malek did put in the gameplan, or kenny, or amanek, or fkin anyone, we do not know shit about that. There might be gamechanging small things that anyone of the team could catch that noone else would that would win the game and there could be none of them and nexa just straight up being inhuman. I do agree that frags are very important, i do not agree the fact that nexa performed so good meant that everybody else performed like shit and didn't win any of the maps just by small things that we did not know just by watching the game from our monitors.
2020-08-29 23:15
and just like for the other idiot i gota explain this AGAIN G2 rely on the IGL top fragging for them why cant u guys understand this??????? Nexa is one of the top performers of the entire event EU and NA if a team needs the IGL top fragging so they can win the team has some issues so like i said 10 times already G2 need the igl top fragging for the win

2020-08-29 19:35
Well, maybe onliners, but still. I am happy for two reasons 1) Cadian was while ago even completely out of the game. Struggling hard with previous heroic aswell, despite having good lineup. Now finals of ESL (even if its "only" online) with mostly rejects of danish CSGO like niko and TeseS? How cool story is this? I am happy for him (them) :) 2) HUNDEN. Ye he was weak, but he most likely is mastermind. After BAD lions dropped him completely (not a choach, WTF?), hes doing wonders with heroic in 2 moths. Reject coach for reject squad, perfect fit :)) Wish them GL in finals.

People give TeseS shit but it's from his time in Optic. That team sucked, and was probably super toxic. He needed to be in a team like this, with other young players so he could grow. Not a shock he and stavn are doing so well, I'm sure Hunden has helped.

Amazing run
2020-08-29 19:46
Sad to say as G2 fan but we played a bit sloppy CS and relied on heavy frags. We look much and I mean MUCH stronger mentally but in-game we looked a bit wild. Especially against OG in D2 etc. I remember that G2 said they didn't prepare as much in-game as they did work on their mental and I hope now that they have their mental set, they can work on their shaky map pool as well as in-game strats for EPL and win this time. GGs to heroic.
