Heroic take revenge on G2 to reach ESL One Cologne grand final
With a 2-1 win over the world's #4 team, Heroic have reached their second consecutive grand final, building on their DreamHack Open Summer success.
In the third meeting between the two teams this year, and the second in the last week, Heroic managed to take their first victory over G2, 2-1. It was a hard-fought battle as the two sides once again vetoed down to the same three maps — Vertigo, Nuke, and Mirage —, and the initial two going into overtime as neither team was able to close out their map pick.
Finally, Heroic came out guns blazing on Mirage, with Nikolaj "niko" Kristensen's miraculous plays pushing them across the line to take down G2 and reach the grand final of ESL One Cologne, after doing the same in DreamHack Open Summer earlier this month.
A clean pistol win for G2 was returned on by Heroic's force buy as the Danes looked strong on the CT side of Vertigo, going up 8-3. Then Audric "JaCkz" Jug stepped up with a double Deagle-entry to add a forth to the French-Serbian team's tally, but more importantly, set them on path of recovery for the half, finishing it 9-6.
Heroic overwhelmed the A site and powered on to B to claim the T-side pistol, extending their lead to 14-8 in no time, but the end of the match was far from near. G2 clawed back as Kenny "kennyS" Schrub came online to help his team equalize the score at 14-14 before Casper "cadiaN" Møller's team pulled out a B execute to reach map point, but Nemanja "nexa" Isaković's well-timed flank pushed the game into overtime.
G2 were looking like the better team throughout the first two sets of added rounds, but ended up getting the short end of the stick, losing their map pick 25-23. A crucial play was René "TeSeS" Madsen's 4K at 18-21, which salvaged a 2v4 situation for his team and allowed Martin "stavn" Lund to power Heroic to the victory with 42 frags.
On Nuke, Heroic got the upper hand early thanks to a successful Vent drop in the pistol (3-0), but kennyS on the AWP showed up strong to push G2 to equalize the scoreline. The action that followed was on the knife's edge, with rounds coming down to the smallest margin, and TeSeS and nexa standing out for their respective sides.
It was Heroic that took a respectable 9-6 lead after their Terrorist side, seeing G2 have to fight back, just like on Vertigo, but now with elimination at stake. In the second pistol, Nemanja "huNter-" Kovač clutched out the 1v2 in the pistol to set his team on road for a comeback as G2 chained with five consecutive rounds. The run was paused by Heroic's low-buy victory, but only shortly, as G2 continued piling on to reach 14-10.
However, Nuke also ended up going to overtime, as stavn showed up with key frags to keep his side afloat. The Danes then took the first added round, but ended up losing the map as huNter- finished off strongly, 32K-21D, to see the action move to Mirage.
Johannes "b0RUP" Borup's Deagle found four frags to earn Heroic the T-side force-buy victory in Mirage, with the 20-year-old rifler displaying strong form with 2 opening kills and three multikill rounds as the Danes went up 5-2 on the decider map. G2's attempt to get back into it were denied by niko, who recorded three multikill rounds in a row, including a 1v4 ace, making it 9-3.
The half was finished 11-4, with a clean B hold edging them closer to victory with 13 rounds to their name. Three in row for G2 gave Damien "maLeK" Marcel's men a lifeline, but two big multikill rounds by b0RUP sealed the deal, concluding Mirage 16-7, 2-1 for the series.
