Spirit extend FaZe's ESL Pro League losing streak to five matches
FaZe's struggles have not subsided since the beginning of the season as they now rack up a 0-5 ESL Pro League Season 12 Europe record, where they have lost to mousesports, Astralis, fnatic, Vitality and most recently Spirit. This last loss also means the European team is now out of contention for the playoffs.
FaZe's woes have been ongoing since adding Markus "Kjaerbye" Kjærbye to the roster at the beginning of the season. They have only managed to get one win, against the now-defunct MIBR in their first event together, ESL One Cologne, where their losses came at the hands of the two teams that made the tournament’s grand final, Heroic and Vitality.
Spirit on the other hand are currently fighting in the middle of the Group B pack and are in the running for a playoff spot, going up to a 3-2 record following today's victory. "We were not ready, we didn't practice much and had a poor level of communication," Boris "magixx" Vorobiev said about their loss in the opening map, Nuke. He then added that he "knew what FaZe were doing and had good kills" on Dust2 and that the team was "at a good level of communication and doing everything well, that's why we won." The series then ended with Spirit on top in Mirage, the decider map, which they secured 16-10 to earn three more points in the standings.
FaZe started out the match on the right foot on the CT side of Nuke as Spirit didn’t get on the board until the sixth round. The CIS squad weren’t able to follow it up immediately, but they brought the half back to within one, 7-8, to keep things close. FaZe extended their lead after the second pistol round, and although Spirit rallied to a 12-12 tie it was Nikola "NiKo" Kovač and company who finally prevailed 16-12.
Spirit showed vast superiority early on in Dust2 as FaZe were unable to penetrate the defenses on either site until the ninth round with a late mid to A execute that Håvard "rain" Nygaard clutched out in a 1vs2 situation. Spirit carried an 11-4 lead into the second half, and although FaZe made it 5-11 after the pistol round, an opening duel by Viktor "sdy" Orudzhev in the forcebuy to create space propelled Spirit ahead to win the round and fast track a 16-8 victory.
Spirit then kicked off Mirage with a 4-0 lead, and although FaZe retaliated early on, Nikolay "mir" Bityukov and company once again held tight on the defense going to the half with a large 11-4 lead. A quick B play by Spirit in the second pistol round gave the CIS squad the keys to the second half as they cruised to a 16-10 victory to secure the series.
