Astralis reverse-sweep NAVI to claim ESL Pro League S12 title

The Danish team came back from two maps down to win their first trophy in almost five months.

Astralis rallied past Natus Vincere with a reverse-sweep on Sunday to win the ESL Pro League Season 12's European division. After almost six hours and over 120 rounds, the Danish team finally claimed their first victory against NAVI in 2020 — following three losses — in a nail-biting series that could have easily gone the other way.

NAVI entered the final with a one-map advantage due to coming from the upper bracket, and they quickly doubled that lead with a convincing performance on their pick of Dust2. But doubt started to come into their mind following close losses on Nuke and Train, where they alternated between dominant and downright ordinary, and they simply fell flat on Overpass, where Astralis were on the front foot from the offset.

Playing their third match of the weekend, the Danish team made an inauspicious start to the series as their defence was cut through by NAVI's players with ease during the opening stages of Dust2. A trio of AWP kills by Peter "dupreeh" Rasmussen over on B gave Astralis a little bit of a breather after five painful rounds, but it would take them a while to get into their stride. After watching NAVI increase their lead to 8-2, the Danish team finally tightened up and managed to reduce the deficit to three rounds before the break.

Astralis win their first title since Road to Rio

Astralis picked up where they left off and quickly equalised the score on the back of a flawless pistol round. The landscape of the game changed after NAVI had money in the bank, however, with the CIS giants locking up the game in the 28th round following a trio of frags by Denis "electroNic" Sharipov to put an end to the Danes' comeback hopes.

dupreeh, who was the sole Astralis player with an above-average rating on Dust2, carried his strong form into Nuke as he pulled off a quad-kill in the pistol round to kick his team into the lead. But it did not last: Natus Vincere took control of proceedings in the gun stages, keeping Astralis' players at bay to secure a 9-6 lead at the half.

Things went from bad to worse for Astralis, whose strategy to lobby crunch NAVI in the pistol round backfired horribly. The CIS team increased their lead to 12-6, but Astralis tightened up once they finally had guns and gradually took the upper hand. With the score tied 13-13, Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy's triple-kill looked to have sent NAVI on the way to victory, but Astralis held on and eventually took the map in the final round of regulation with a 1v2 clutch by Nicolai "device" Reedtz.

Train began at a frantic pace as rounds went both ways and neither side was able to take a firm grip of the game. But that quickly changed: after that highly-contested early period, Astralis took the game by the throat and outplayed their opponents for the rest of the half as Kirill "Boombl4" Mikhailov's troops lacked solutions and struggled to get any map control. With 23 frags to his name and nine multi-kill rounds, Patrick "es3tag" Hansen was the nickname on everyone's lips as the Danes enjoyed a commanding 13-2 lead.

The game seemed to be a foregone conclusion as Astralis quickly picked up two rounds — the first with nothing but P250s — to get within touching distance of victory. Down 7-15, NAVI dug deep to withstand the pressure and won eight rounds without response, but their efforts would be in vain: after a first overtime that did not determine a winner, Astralis won two rounds in each half in the second set of extra rounds to level the series at 2-2.

Astralis came out on Overpass with guns blazing, racing to an 11-4 lead following a dominant T display, with device leading the charge with 20 kills and a 109 ADR. NAVI came fighting back and brought the deficit to a minimum after a bright start to their T side, but a comeback was not on the cards as the Danes made one final push to seal the victory with a string of rounds.

i mean NaVi needs another star player, i like flamie, he seems like a nice guy, but his performance is a roller coaster, perfecto is still young and he will grow as a player, Boombl4 has its downs as a fragger, but the tactics that NaVi have used sometimes caught Astralis by surprise

He doesnt need to prove that he is the best individual player cuz everybody knows that. Thats why u device fans will always say "s1mple 0 majors". Device team is stacked with good players, s1mple has 1 good player and rest are trash. We saw what happened to astralis when glaive left. Edit: u just agreed that device has better teammates wich is the reason why he won all those majors.

I mean... Nuke and Train could easily have gone the other way aswell. If you just look at 3-1 based on maps played, its not that close. But if you look at 16-14 (and the way they won nuke) and the double OT on Train after a massive Comeback, i think its pretty fair to call in a close game.

Astralis have been shit you say? Based ob what? Because they haven’t been dominant like last year? That have won 2 tournaments this year, and I’m pretty sure almost my other team would be more than happy to trade results. I’m not saying that Device should be 1st this year or that Astralis are an obvious no. 1 this year, but they are still really good and probably still the last team anyone wants to meet in a final.

There is a reason why Team rankings and individual rankings are separate. You could be in a perfect 'team' and hence win many tournaments. But there can be a player who is a generational talent, a prodigy, but couldn't find a great team to win tournaments. If the ranking system for best individual players, can't recognize this prodigy talent, it's a failure of system. Messi is acclaimed as GOAT, even though he has no world-cups to show for it. As far as individual skill is concerned, s1mple definitely outperforms everyone else. Individual ranking is based on Average damage per round, Kills/deaths ratio per round, impact rating, percentage and number of opening duels won, number and percentage of 1vX clutches won, number of multi-kill rounds achieved, team contribution (KAST), number of MVPs, number of EVPs, number of tournaments won, consistency factors, and 10 other factors. The formula for this is made by the makers and experts of CS. It doesn't matter who does the calculation, you, me, or a computer. The result will be the same. It's very objectively determined who is the best player and who is the GOAT. There's no scope for personal opinion.

I speak for myself, and what I'm talking about is also something that Astralis strives for, and that's also what NAVI strives for. Money ,, Astralis earns more than NAVI Astralis has won more money in counter strike Trophy: All pro players have a dream of winning a MAJOR ,,, not 4 like Astralis, winning 1 major in his life is one of the biggest things you can achieve, winning 4 MAJOR is something we will not see, maybe about 15 years. If you ask Simple ,,,, will you be number 1 player in the world for 5 years in a row, or will you win 1 MAJOR, what you you he will say, I will mean to win a MAJOR DEVICE CONTINUOUS is the best in the world, you can read about it, If we have a scale from 1 to 10 Simple in one year, 7.7.9.10.8.9.6.10.8.7- Device of 1 year. 9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9,9 It creates 25 Trophy 4 MAJOR 2 MPV MAJOR 1 GRAND SLAM If you ask simple ,,, you want it or your own stats ,,, then he would take devices

No, its just one guy using numbers. Which is dumb. In football they don't decide the winner of Ballon d'Or based on most goals scored. Or most assists. Titles matters - its the only thing that matters - and device won 4 majors - the biggest tournament in CS:GO - s0mple won zero. 0. Nothing.

Are you fcking kidding me? HLTV ranking is based on statistics and the standard ranking formula, that includes the K/D ratio, Average damage per round, impact rating, opening duel success rate, clutch success rate, number of multi-kill rounds, KAST, number of tournaments won, number of tournaments where the player has been in grand finals and on and on. There are tens of mathematically formulated factors for deciding rankings, and there's no scope for any doubts, because it is mathematically calculated. Titles matter a lot for team rankings, but a little lesser for individual rankings. However, titles won is indeed also a factor for individual rankings. It's not based on one person's feelings. Stop making absurdly nonsensical, child-like statements. Best player is best individual skill. There have been generational talents in all sports, but they couldn't find great teammates and never won the majors or world-cups (like Messi). That doesn't make them any less capable. Similarly, a team that works perfectly in synergy can become the best team of all time. That doesn't make the individual players the greatest. There's a reason why team ratings/rankings are separate from individual ratings and rankings. Once again, it's never a bad thing to learn late. The rankings are extremely objective, just as much as 2.0 rating is. It doesn't matter who does the calculation - you, me or a computer. The logic for ranking is made by the makers and experts of the game. There's no scope for subjectivity like you are saying.

I DON'T KNOW THEM PERSONALLY! But I LOVE some great cs! And tonight's game was absolutely wonderful between these two superteams! 👍👍👍

Thanx, man! The "hltv experts" always get busy with "fix threads" and all that, whenever a top team loses a match. It is absolutely ridiculous. Astralis was the better TEAM against NaVi today, but ANY team - including Astralis - will have a tuff time against NaVi in the future! Looking at the scoreboard it could've gone the other way. NaVi made it all the way to the final of a huuuuge tournament. I wouldn't consider "team fix" as the first thing Monday morning! 😎👍

He didn't use it against Na'Vi, which is precisely why I left out Hard Legion. Na'Vi since Katowice has been consistently bad, even bombing out in Cologne's group stages. They were good this tournament, mostly because of s1mple and electronic, but that Katowice form is not back (aka a fluke).

Due to a s1mple/electronic carry. Nothing this team has produced since Katowice has had all five members perform well. You don’t need to be a Na’Vi fan to know that they’ve been inconsistent as fuck in past events. Katowice will always be a fluke if it’s just s1mple and electronic performing. And that’s including this match as well.

To be honest, old Navi would have lost 0:3 to Astralis, this Navi made it really close, and played great over the whole year. They improved a lot, since Zeus and Edward left. This roster right now has potential, they won Katowice, and they showed what they can do. They just need to fix these mistakes that they are doing, some of them are really bad. But nontheless, both teams played great cs.

u really think so? I think they lost all their structure when Zeus left and lost quite a lot of consistency when they kicked Edward. Since then NaVi looked more inconsistent than ever, one match they destroy everyone, the next they look clueless and don't even put up a fight. With Zeus and Edward they always lost their first match of every tournament but then powered through until they met a better team, now they even loose against teams they should never loose against.

Awpers usually have lower adr coz they kill people who are already brought down to low hp by nades and tags from other riflers. Still s1mple had the most ADR in this tournament with highest impact rating. Astralis also had lot of chances to win. They also threw 15-8 lead in train but they saved it by winning in overtime.

gotta be real, Na'Vi kinda got fucked by the EPL bracketing system. this "bo4" really gives the lower bracket an advantage to play for the final map pick and win, id much rather see a true playoff with no lower bracket and single-elimination bo3 and a bo5 final to get a much more honest tournament result. although, i still think Astralis won this fair and square and deserve this trophy, im really not a fan of this system.

Having 1 map advantage + first pick is a disadvantage?? Get your head checked. De_lusional

lower bracket can still easily win the map pick if the team is good enough to stay alive, the 1 map advantage just becomes a blank check in a bo4.

"Lower bracket can still if the team is good enough". Yes Ofc. What would be the point otherwise :D You make no sense.

i have no idea what you're trying to imply here, you clearly have failed to see my point

When your point is that the team who's given a 1:0 lead, first map pick, an extra day of rest and preparation is at an disadvantage then your point is pretty hard to see.

Don't forget that Astralis had to play 2 official matches the day before. It would be understandable if they were exhausted.
2020-10-05 06:52
As stated above, you clearly have no idea what you are talking about. You will find no top in the world, that would trade away 1 map point and first pick in exchange for “picking” the final map. The upper bracket team “only” have to win their own maps picks, while the lower bracket team needs to win on the opponents pick to even get a chance to play the final map which they “picked”. I use “ “ on picked, as there are only 2 maps left when they “pick” the final map.

I would say boat (best of all time) and not goat (greatest of all time) since to be a goat, u actually need to have achievements to back it up

Astralis is looking insane atm., they are TOP 3 team for me. NaVi is showing some potential aswell, I think that the core of s1mple, electronic and Boombl4 can still make a really good team together.

Navi will rekt Astralis on consistant basis if: -flamie -Perfecto +Mir +FL1T 2 or perhaps 3 players almost beat Astralis on their own, 1 series-point away FURIA is insane with most skill and will most likely win with kinda ez vs Astralis if they face eachother is my prediction so .. Astralis not my top1 world-team at least for now
