FURIA defeat 100 Thieves to win IEM New York NA; qualify for IEM Global Challenge
The Australian roster's swan song effort proved unsuccessful as FURIA came back from a map down to win the North American division of IEM New York.
100 Thieves were in good form heading into the grand final, looking to make good on one last outing together amid Justin "jks" Savage's impending move to Complexity and as the organisation prepares to pull out of CS:GO. Aaron "AZR" Ward's troops were faced with the prospect of a rematch against FURIA, with the Brazilians having claimed a 3-0 victory in the ESL Pro League Season 12 grand final just three weeks prior.
Although 100 Thieves got off on the right foot, prevailing in dominant fashion on Nuke, FURIA quickly got back in the saddle as they edged out a win on Inferno before cruising through Vertigo. A stellar T side on Mirage gave way to a battle in the second half, but ultimately it was FURIA who came out ahead to secure the series victory, earn the lion's share of Regional Major Ranking (RMR) points, and secure a spot at the IEM Global Challenge in December.
It was a one-sided affair at the onset of the series as 100 Thieves made short work of FURIA on Nuke, Sean "Gratisfaction" Kaiwai stepping up to bat with a stellar individual performance as his side dominated the Brazilians for a 13-2 lead at the break. A pistol round and subsequent anti-eco victory following the side swap put AZR's side on match point in swift fashion, with the team putting a stop to a brief comeback effort from FURIA to secure a 16-9 map win.
Inferno was a keenly-contested battleground, a brawl in which FURIA initially led 4-0 before 100 Thieves clawed back, edging out a one-round lead at halftime. A strong start to their offensive effort saw FURIA regain the upper hand as they pushed up to a 14-11 scoreline, and although 100 Thieves fought back to stay in contention, it was the Brazilians who managed to prevail to tie up the series score.
FURIA remained in firm control as their pick of Vertigo got underway, battering 100 Thieves' defenses throughout the first half for an 11-4 lead. Henrique "HEN1" Teles stepped up alongside Yuri "yuurih" Santos after the break as the Brazilians wasted little time in bringing about an end to the map, winning five rounds in a row to take the map and pull ahead 2-1 in the series.
Andrei "arT" Piovezan's men once again got off to a stellar start on the CT side of Mirage, picking 100 Thieves apart to post another 11-4 lead heading into the side swap. It seemed as if 100 Thieves would be able to force a fifth map as they began shutting down FURIA in the second half, reading the rotations of the Brazilians on a handful of occasions to close the deficit; however, multi-kill rounds from yuurih and arT helped get the Brazilian side back in the saddle, with the team gaining ground to halt 100 Thieves's comeback efforts and close out the map, 16-11.
