Virtus.pro spoil new-look Cloud9 debut

The Flashpoint 2 group C opener went the way of CIS side, who swept the new European roster on Inferno and denied their comeback attempt on Overpass for a 2-0 victory.

Cloud9 wasn't able to start things off with a bang as the debuting lineup led by Alex "ALEX" McMeekin lost to a rising Virtus.pro.

The CIS side, currently ranked #15 in the world, limited their opponents to just five rounds on their first map, Inferno, but Cloud9 was able to show more on Overpass. A new face on the top level, William "mezii" Merriman, displayed his potential with a 1.29 rating on the map and was the team's best performer alongside Özgür "woxic" Eker. However, Dzhami "Jame" Ali's brilliant late-round play and some misplayed advantages for Cloud9 cost them a chance to push the series to the decider.

Virtus.pro will now advance to the winners' match of Group C, where they will wait for the victor of OG - Gen.G, while Cloud9 will try to bounce back against the loser of the same match.

Jame won key rounds to ensure the win for Virtus.pro

Retaking B worked out for Cloud9, earning them their first-round played with the new lineup, but the excitement was short-lived as Virtus.pro bounced back with a second-round force. After Sanjar "SANJI" Kuliev denied mezii's clutch attempts twice, the CIS side was up 5-1, with Jame's 1v3 clutch ensuring a strong T-side for Virtus.pro.

ALEX had to step up with two triple kills, one on A and one on B, to earn Cloud9 two more rounds on the CT side, but that was all for the half as Virtus.pro ran up a 12-3 lead. Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis added to that with a quad kill from Pit in the pistol, and after some force-buys being traded, Virtus.pro closed out their map confidently, 16-5.

A scrappy, clutch-heavy start to Overpass resulted in Cloud9 taking a 3-1 lead, with rookie mezii leading the way for the European mixture. Jame stepped up in a couple of key rounds that followed, seeing Virtus.pro regain the lead and build on the momentum to finish the half 10-5 up.

The deficit Cloud9 found themselves in was increased as Jame won a 1v3 in the second pistol, his fourth clutch on the map. A hero play from Patrick "es3tag" Hansen with the USP-S translated into an eco victory for his side and gave them a chance to recover on the defense, with Ricky "floppy" Kemery's Deagle triple really kicking off the comeback. ALEX and co. pulled it all the way back to 15-14 and overtime looked guaranteed as they found themselves in a 4v2 situation, but Timur "buster" Tulepov and Alexey "qikert" Golubev stole away the round to conclude the series 2-0.

Considering the hype of HenryG it is quite fun to see them lose. And it'll continue for a while. Being a T1 IGL is quite a lot easier when you have players like Zywoo in your team.

yup, when he stepped down from Vitality he literally put a shotgun shell between the eyes of his career. Painful to see as British CS is historically weak, and what few players that are in the pro scene seem to make really silly decisions.

He played well. floppy wasn't great, C9 will likely play Gen.G next. They should beat them, and we'll see how they do next. Difficult for a new team to get off to a good start when playing against a hot-looking VP though

This was said in the thinking that double stand-in GenG would not be a good team. But it does appear that they are proving me wrong. Agree that OG should beat C9 in any case though

Though to be fair, there isn't any data on how GenG plays with their stand-ins. This might have left OG a bit dry on how to play against them. Not saying that OG should have lost, but you can get my point? I do think OG SHOULD win against C9, but I'm ready to be surprised

Expected 2:0 win for the very top tier pro gamers from Virtus.pro. Not too sure why anyone would have thought that this could’ve gone the other way, unfortunately for C9 it couldn’t have ever gone the other way, vp too good for their level. Gg bb :) Hopefully in the future they get better and win some games, its just the beginning, hopefully not a quick end and they do live to the hype.

when flashpoint was announced it wasn't clear who was playing in it, it was just partner teams. it is a fair assumption that c9 coul win against many of them. vp, forze, fnatic, og, big are teams of another caliber though, establishedd, strong, vp is on fire right now. So there is no surprise c9 lost. they probably can't win the first officials agains established teams. they need time n experience as a roster.

2020-11-12 18:37
Cloud9 is such a joke lineup. Mezii is a nobody Woxic is extremly bad at communication with his team (reason booted from mousesport) Alex and es3tag are the only decent players on the team, Alex isn't an heavy fragger and Es3tag needs a team to set him up for his heavy hitting. Floppy is just a nobody that could frag somewhat against Na t2. One of the most money and time invested in making lineups of all time is just doomed to flop. No synergies in the team. -floppy + HS and they would get a player with experience in different teams and he could give them a decent start -woxic +GuardiaN his english has gotten really good lately and he's been pumping fpl matches lately with good performance, give him a few weeks in team enviroment and he's gonna pop off

So you saying is: - team is "doomed to flop" after one loss - change roster after one official match is the best way to make team work, - new player that has no team for a year that will come in will need few weeks to "pop off", but for some reason you will not give that time to current players, Man, your team management skills are off the roof. You know CS as nobody else. You should be hired by C9 or other org. :-)

Did anybody really expect Cloud9 to win? Virtus Pro aren't that great of a team, but Cloud9 finalized their roster not too long ago, so them winning against VP was a bit of a long shot. I like both teams, but VP has fallen off so hard over the past year and Cloud9 has some great players, but some of them lack experience playing against actual Tier 1 teams.

Aint that great of the team? Huh? They win navi like 3 times in a row, so its pretty much confirmed vp > navi. Ofc navi “inst that good of a team also” but then who is? All the teams gets constantly fucked up by “upsets” atm.

Being a T1 IGL is quite a lot easier when you have players like Zywoo in your team.
