Vitality defeat Complexity; to face NAVI in IEM Beijing-Haidian grand final
Vitality are continuing to show good form following their quarter-final victory over No-2-ranked Heroic, and are now through to the IEM Beijing-Haidian grand final after defeating Complexity in the tournament’s semis. There they’ll meet Natus Vincere, a team they haven’t faced since beating them in a three-map playoff lower bracket series in the BLAST Premier Spring Finals in June.
The French team, who have finished second at two tournaments since the summer break, ESL One Cologne and DreamHack Open Fall, will now have a third shot at lifting a trophy this season.
Vitality were able to find their groove late on in their map pick, Vertigo, a close affair in the semi-final bout, thanks to a strong double AWP setup made up of Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut and Richard "shox" Papillon. The French team then kept their CT-side momentum on Complexity’s map pick, and although the half ended up being a close one, a pistol round clutch by shox in the second half gave Vitality the wind needed to close the series out in two maps.
Complexity won the first pistol round on the defending side of Vertigo, but quick entries by Vitality on the A site in the two following rounds put the French squad ahead. Benjamin "blameF" Bremer and company were able to win the following round with four pistols and a saved rifle to keep things tied up, turning around the economic game and taking a 5-3 lead. Complexity then brought it back to a tie, 6-6, after which Kristian "k0nfig" Wienecke killed five players in a 3vs5 retake, and although he was denied the defuse by a molotov, his team went on to win the half by a razor-thin margin, 8-7.
Complexity once again won the pistol round, this time on the attack, but were once again unable to take the anti-forcebuy as Vitality went on to regain the lead early on 10-9. The two teams remained neck-and-neck, but a double AWP setup by ZywOo and an on-point shox gave Vitality the edge as they broke out with a five round streak to close the map out 16-11.
Complexity made it three for three pistol rounds on the attacking side of Mirage, but Vitality then made it three for three second round forcebuys before going up 5-1. Complexity then finally found success on the B site to tally another round, but weren’t able to follow it up, struggling to find cracks in Vitality’s CT side. Cédric "RpK" Guipouy had a standout performance on A, finishing the side with 19 kills and over 150 ADR even though Complexity brought their slow start back to a close 7-8 half.
shox won a 1vs4 clutch in the second pistol round of Mirage to keep his team in the driver’s seat as they went up 11-7 ahead of the first buy round. A fast A incursion caused Complexity to call for a save, although it was in vain as they were unable to put up a defense that could stop the French squad, losing all seven rounds played in the second half as Vitality secured a spot in the IEM Beijing-Haidian grand final.
