Vitality reverse sweep NAVI to win IEM Beijing-Haidian

The French team claimed a long-awaited title after a nail-biting series that went the full distance.

For Vitality, the fifth time was the charm.

The French team, bloodied and bruised after losing four straight finals in the last five months (two to Heroic and one to both Complexity and BIG), came back from two maps down to beat Natus Vincere 3-2 in the grand final of IEM Beijing-Haidian and pick up their first title of the year.

And what a reverse sweep it was.

Vitality looked dead and buried just two maps into the series. With the team down 8-14 on Dust2 and 0-1 in the series, coach Rémy "XTQZZZ" Quoniam and in-game leader Dan "apEX" Madesclaire were rubbing their forehead in frustration. That was not how their map pick — or the series, for that matter — was supposed be going, but there was little that they could do to stop the onslaught from Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev during those first two maps, where the Ukrainian prodigy averaged a 2.05 rating.

But against all expectations, Vitality moved into high gear, using their six-man roster to perfection to equalise the series with dominant and aggressive displays on Overpass and Inferno. The final map, Mirage, was also a one-sided affair, but it could have been a completely different story had Mathieu "ZywOo" Herbaut not pulled off two absolutely stunning aces in the first five rounds to leave NAVI's players distraught and doubting themselves for the rest of the game.

"We had a plan for this best-of-five but it didn't work out, we were playing a bit scared on Dust2 and Nuke," apEX said after the match. "He [XTQZZZ] just said: 'Forget about everything, let's just play our own game and let's focus on ourselves.'

"I think that is why we had lost those finals before, because we hadn't been ourselves. He is a big part of our win, without a doubt."

apEX praised team coach XTQZZZ for his role in the victory

NAVI came out all guns blazing on Nuke, setting the tempo from the outset as they brute-forced their way to a 7-0 lead, showing the same attacking intent that had earned them the victory against G2 the day before. Vitality tightened up and put together a few rounds, but their respite wouldn't last: NAVI kept the pressure on their opponents, with s1mple putting the team in complete control during the final stages of the half, during which he pulled off a 1v3 clutch.

After an indifferent T performance, Egor "flamie" Vasilyev came to life in the second half as he picked up four kills in the pistol round to keep NAVI in the driving seat. s1mple held off Vitality in the first gun round with a trio of AWP frags, with Ilya "Perfecto" Zalutskiy ending the game in style with a quad-kill of his own just two rounds later.

Vitality brought Nabil "Nivera" Benrlitom on for Dust2 and they looked a different side during the early stages as they raced to a 5-0 lead on the T side. It seemed that NAVI would receive the same treatment that they had given Vitality on Nuke, but then the s1mple show began. The Ukrainian star spearheaded NAVI's comeback with a stellar CT performance that saw him end the half with 26 frags, a 167 ADR, a 6-0 opening duel record and seven multi-kill rounds, including a stunning ace.

NAVI's domination continued in the second half as they lost just one round en route to map point. Nivera stepped up to the plate and kept Vitality in the game with some stellar AWPing, but their recovery ended in the 28th round, when Kirill "Boombl4" Mikhailov landed the finishing blow with a quad-kill.

Kévin "misutaaa" Rabier was brought back on for Overpass, where Vitality finally showed their true colours. They took the fight to NAVI's doorstep and picked up 12 rounds on the CT side, with Richard "shox" Papillon leading the charge with a 1.86 rating and a 133 ADR. The CIS giants still attempted a response after finding themselves facing map point, but their comeback efforts were buried when Cédric "RpK" Guipouy put the game to rest with a clean 4K.

Inferno followed the same pattern as Overpass, with Vitality dictating the pace of the game during a one-sided first half in which they cut through NAVI's fragile defence with ease. In the second half, it was time for Vitality's young guns to shine as misutaaa and Nivera combined for 21 frags to carry the team over the finish line and fend off a late comeback attempt from NAVI.

ZywOo lit up the server on Mirage with two stunning aces in the opening stages, setting Vitality up for a 6-0 lead. After a much-needed tactical pause, NAVI were finally able to put some rounds together, bringing the scoreline to 5-10 with some key plays from the team's star duo, s1mple and Denis "electronic" Sharipov.

Now playing on the T side, NAVI bagged the first three rounds of the half to keep their comeback hopes alive, but the landscape of the game changed once Vitality had money to work with. The French side won six rounds without response to put the game away and end their long wait for a title.

Some would say s1mple is baiting, but he played a hell of a final and is well deserved man of the match. Finally Vitality broke the curse, they managed to climb back and gave us a great final to witness!

Dude, I won't be rude, but fck how dumb are you rn ? Vitality this year it's nothing less than 5 finals, 1 win, a new kind roaster with trully 6 players ( Bubzkji is just cleaning the bench for Astralis, that doesn't count). They won against all the Tier 1 teams, didn't got involved in the coach bug abuse scandal and all the players actually are monsters. So no, Vitality clearly is the best team in the world and will stay on the top 5 for at least 6 more months eaven if they stop working hard and just keep their level. PS: my english kinda sucks as you can see, sorry for that lmao ^^

I think s1mple is the one who's trying hard to lead his team to win, but it is how it is, and if you think, that s1 the cause of reverse sweep (what you actually said in you comment), then you are an idiot, sorry p.s. great game, navi lost competitive spirit at the end, cos of awesome zywoo clutches, and they just fall apart as a team :)

I personnaly think that NAVI rellied more on s1mple's individual plays than Vitality with ZywOo, that's what I mean by that. Vitality as a whole is more consistent

5th map wasnt about strats, they lost everything they could, pistols, important clutches, 5v3 rounds, they just played really bad, with no passion. And what the stereotype that navi doing strats around s1mple, you really think that B1ad3 is an idiot ? No hate, deserved win, Vita was stronger than navi

Not necessary, it depends on how both Zywoo and S1mple perform until the last event in this year over for both of them. If S1mple do well and Zywoo do shit then maybe S1mple can win top 1. But if S1mple doing bad then regardless how IEM Global Challenge outcome happens, Zywoo top 1 for sure. There is no way with 1 month left that anyone aside of S1mple and Zywoo can contest top 2 Hltv.

Good luck playing a Bo5 in grand finals against a team that can swap ppl out. Surely the math is there that being able to swap a person in between maps is an advantage that Navi ain't got. As far as I'm concerned, having in mind that they went all the way to the 5th map, this was a great final. Esp compared to NA xD

Historic final, that was fucking sick. In a few years we'll remember the simple / zywoo rivalry as one of the best of CSGO history. We're lucky to watch such players. But eventually I feel like Navi played for simple, Vitality played for the win. I think the difference was made by LIG and coaches here.

What do u mean navi played for simple, r u fck blind or what? Look at his dust2 performance, most of his kills he made by himself. Just a great reaction and right crosshair placing did all the job. He rarely died last or among lasts, there were even moments he went out first. Essentially, you frenchmen merely don't want to admit that simple is much better than zywho. I won't even dispute that vitality is better as a team, the result proves it, however u have no choice but to agree that simple is the best atm.

But now i see, you are a fan of fck toxic baggette who shows middle fingers to the camera behaving like a kido. Imagine being his fan. It means you are prone to do smth like this. Nothing to say, eh? I am ok with the fact he lost, his team did everything for this. Proofs i am a kid? I gave, u did not. How the fuck did u come to the conclusion he is my idol? Lmao. He simply the best in da game rn. That's all i wanted you to understand, idc about navi losing again,i already got used to it. I find it amusing that y'all perfectly know that s1mple is the best but can't admit it because he is not a representative of your country. It is because of an inflated self-esteem. Btw, check stats of the match one more time and to tell you the truth, true leader dont play 60 81.

I think he reckons because if a player has a bad day, or is visibly tired from stress/focusing, they can just ez replace him and do that map-map basis. Or if you got someone who sucks at D2 but on bench is a D2 gode, you swap for D2 maps and like 15% more chance of winning. It's smart and since clearly tournament orgs allow it, all teams should start doing it.
2020-11-22 22:24
vitalty were afk first 2 maps then they played at their level... vitality is by far a better team right now.. navi is one player, not a team.

Stupid bo5 format in finals has to go, unless competitive map pool will have at least 10 active maps to ensure proper pick/ban strats, or each match in tournament should be played in bo5. No sports has a final more stretched than a common play-off match. Also that thing with 6 man roster and substitutes during a match needs to have proper regulation from valve. It's extremely unfair that RMR tournaments has a big point penalty for even own coach 1 match stand-in, meanwhile in others team can change anyone from 6 players during maps all tournament long. Btw well played Vitality, Navi didn't deserve to win with that loosing mentality. s1mple is still better than zywoo in both stats and achievemens in 2020 tho.

No, I am against bo5 format from the start of it. There's 7 maps in competitive pool rn, with two common team bans - all rest 5 maps to be played are already known in bo5, there is no pick/ban strategy and map pick surprise, which helped NaVi to win vs Astralis. It's the same as to cut map pool to 5 maps and play bo3 then.

As I said, I am OK with bo5 if there will be maps to choose. Like add cbble, cache and 1 more map without removing anything - and 10 actives are already good for both bo3 and bo5.
2020-11-22 22:47
Is completelly opposite. Why you think team deserves to win a.k.a is the best, if they cant even play all the maps. Bo5 forces them to be good on all maps or gtfo.

This vitality 6man roster is a really well implemented system. You can see the hype every time a player is subbed in and you can see that the guy that is left out does not have extra presure or fear of losing his spot cuz he knows that his time to help his team will come. apEX does a ton of work, indeed. I think he is addicted CS workaholic, perfect for the job. I also think the coach adds some really valuable input as well, or whoever is prepping all the nitty strats for Vita. They are secure in most situations as a team and this is a huge mental advantage. Giving the room for individuals to pop-up, etc. Na'Vi lost because of the lack of the same factor, mental prowess...

zywoo also played hard entry jackz style at some point.. and played hybrid riffle/ awp , so why compare with stats , they don t play same roles... when you go first your frags count twice for the win but not the stats for example , simple was insane also .. they are both something else for sure.
2020-11-23 12:46
S1mple: 118-70 K/D -> +48 96.2 ADR 1.47 rating ZywOo: 88-71 K/D -> +17 78.8 ADR 1.23 rating S1mple is the star player as well as a supportive player. ZywOo is the star player who gets all the support from his team, so he should have better stats by any measure. I don't understand how anyone can say ZywOo even rivals S1mple for best in the world. Give S1mple a team like Vitality and he'd have an Astralis-level record, but purely based on skill rather than tactics and teamwork.
