Astralis, Complexity, EG, NAVI round out IEM Global Challenge team list
Four teams were invited to the $500,000 event in December based on their positions in the ESL world ranking.
The eight squads that will compete at ESL's final event of the year, the IEM Global Challenge, have been decided. Four teams earned their spots by winning lead-up events, with Chaos and Vitality doing so on Sunday, while the other four spots were filled by the highest-ranked European, North American, and CIS squads.
Astralis and Complexity were handed the European invites, with the latter team just barely pulling ahead of BIG in the ESL rankings before invites were handed out. Evil Geniuses joined tournament winners FURIA and Chaos from North America as Liquid missed out, while Natus Vincere were guaranteed a spot at the Global Challenge regardless of the IEM Beijing-Haidian grand final result as the standout team in CIS.
The IEM Global Challenge was originally planned as a LAN event, but those plans were scrapped as the coronavirus pandemic entered its second wave in Europe. The tournament will be held on December 15-20, with a double-elimination BO3 group stage leading to a single-elimination BO3 playoff stage and BO5 grand final.
