Cloud9 replace EG in DreamHack Masters Winter

The 'Colossus' received a last-minute invitation following the North American team's withdrawal.

Cloud9 will take Evil Geniuses' spot in DreamHack Masters Winter's European division, the tournament organiser announced on Monday. The decision was made after the North American team were forced to put their travel plans on hold due to "Covid-19 related restrictions".

Evil Geniuses had announced earlier on Monday that they would skip this week's BLAST Premier Fall Showdown, in which their spot will be filled by Heroic. This makes the IEM Global Challenge, which will be held between December 15 and 20, the only tournament that Peter "stanislaw" Jarguz's side will play until the end of the year.

Cloud9 will face Gambit in the first round

Cloud9 will replace EG in the Group A bracket, taking on Gambit in the first round of the double-elimination group stage. Prior to this tournament, the European team will play the BLAST Premier Fall Showdown, in which they will be seeking redemption following a group stage exit in Flashpoint 2.

DreamHack Masters Winter's European division will be held online from November 30 through to December 6, with $150,000 on offer. The updated groups for the tournament can be found below:

The opening match-ups are the following:

Group A

Denmark Heroic vs. Europe c0ntact
Europe FaZe vs. Russia Spirit
Europe Complexity vs. Finland ENCE
Europe Cloud9 vs. Russia Gambit

Group B

Denmark Astralis vs. Europe GODSENT
United States Liquid vs. Europe mousesports
Europe G2 vs. Germany Sprout
Brazil FURIA vs. Denmark North

I feel like this is probably going to be this C9 lineups Make-or-Break tournament if they don't place well at BLAST. I guess it's slightly unreasonable to expect a brand new team to become good in less than a month but anything less than honestly doesn't justify how HenryG has talked the team up and the money C9 has spent on them

Everyone clowned on Complexity, OG last year, and look at them now. You can't expect a new team to perform as if they're top 5 out of the blue

Sir/Madam, I am part of the quality assurance team here at HLTV, We have come to inform you that we are extremely sorry, but it appears the comment you posted to a twitch channel, most likely ESL, somehow got posted on our HLTV forums. Rest assured we are working on the problem and we will give you an update as soon as possible. In the meantime please reframe from posting low quality stuff to twitch as we are afraid it might get posted to our HLTV forums again. Many thanks, Professional DJ

This is a joke, and a bad one... Team 150+ on HLTV ranking invited to event like this one. Maybe they should at least win one official match first? All others team need to play first 9999 tier 3 tournaments to get any chance to fight in tournament like this one, and C9 get 2nd chance in this month just to be smash. Shame.
2020-11-23 22:24

This is because the players have lots of tournament points - So when they are in the same team the points adds up. This is the reason for the invite. You can argue its a stupid way. And I agree.

The future doesn't look good for EG. One year ago they looked pretty convincing and, now, they are almost irrelevant. Almost as irrelevant as this constantly-changing Clown9, a team we can't even keep up with roster rebuilds.

I think Sponsors, merchs and player live stream have more % to the team's income rather than tournament prize money since normally orgs only take 10% of the prize money. Explains why faze still operates despite their high profile player signing with subpar achievements.

But only NA players and few others like s1mple have a big following, right? Sponsors agreed, merchandise - does it bring in that much revenue? I'm just worried these orgs are all going to burn out of cash and csgo bubble is gonna burst :(

With those investments, Cloud9 have shown that they are here for the long run and for top spots. Should be very attractive to other players, giving them a good chance to build a great roster. Time will tell.
