Gambit knock Cloud9 down to DreamHack Masters Winter Group A lower bracket

Gambit showed vast superiority on Vertigo before closing the series out in a 30-round Inferno to proceed through the upper bracket, leaving Cloud9 one loss away from elimination.

The day after being crowned DreamHack Open November champions, winning every one of their four matches and giving up just one map along the way, Gambit have now defeated Cloud9 2-0 in their DreamHack Masters Winter Group A opening match to secure a spot in the next round of upper bracket play.

Cloud9, who come from falling just short of making it to the BLAST Premier Fall Finals after losing the decisive match of the Fall Showdown's single elimination bracket to mousesports, quickly fell behind in the series against Gambit, unable to keep up with the CIS side on Vertigo where they tallied just six rounds in total.

Moving on to their own map, Inferno, the squad led by Alex "ALEX" McMeekin were once again playing catch-up with their CIS rivals, going down 6-9 on the attacking side, and although they were able to take the map all the way to 30 rounds on the CT side, they faltered in the map's dying embers, losing it 14-16 to get sent down to the lower bracket.

Gambit put forth a team effort to win their DH Masters Winter opener

Gambit set a fast pace in the first pistol round of Vertigo, planting on the A site and winning the 5vs5 afterplant. Four opening kills by Vladislav "nafany" Gorshkov in the first gun round kept the CIS squad charging ahead as they got a 7-0 lead uncontested before doubles by Ricky "floppy" Kemery and ALEX got Cloud9 on the board. Gambit immediately bounced back and continued to abuse the A site, allowing the CTs just two more rounds before closing out the half with a 13-2 lead.

Four kills by Patrick "es3tag" Hansen in the second pistol round kept Cloud9 alive on the attacking side of Vertigo, but Gambit were quick to restabilize on the defense, once again showing the same dominance as they did in the first half by winning out after the first gun round, making it 16-6.

Gambit were once again first out of the gate on Inferno, but this time around Cloud9 struck back in the forcebuy. The European squad then took the lead, 2-1, but lost to a full eco and went down 2-5 before they were able to win an eco of their own on a B play. Gambit didn’t slow down and bounced right back, though, going up 9-3 before giving up the last handful of rounds in what ended up being a 6-9 half.

nafany and company defended a 3vs4 plant on A to hit double digits right off the bat, further extending their lead to 12-6 before two opening kills on banana by floppy and a triple by es3tag got Cloud9 back on the board. The two teams then traded rounds, but it was ALEX’s men who started to hit a groove on the defense, bringing the match back to a 14-14 tie. They were ultimately unable to bring it around, however, faltering 14-16 as Gambit punched their ticket to the next round of upper bracket play.

He bought 1 guy with attitude issues to awp, one IGL who can’t handle pressure / burns out, one american tier 2 player as support, one guy who never really played pro CS and one insanely overpriced Astralis stand-in. All talented, but just so many question marks as to the mental state of this team, we’ll see if they can stop choking with time

Unreal pro gaming by gambit, spirit and cis as always, as expected, wanted to watch mirage, but since c9 are still tier 2 and not good enough for super pros from gambit, we'll have to stick with 2:0, alright then, np, gg bb.

classic NA brain to make Cloud9. Yankees and patriots did the same things, buy up all the "best" players and shove em together because you think it will work, spend $$$ to put yourself in the best positions in the best tournaments, world #1? never.

It worked for Patriots, didn’t it. Problem with Cloud9, those “best” players are either not good enough or out of form. They will do roster changes soon enough.

C9 is gonna be ass for months. 5 players from different countries (putting ALEX as a French player because hes only played in high profile french teams) and shoved them together hoping for results. C9 wont be good for atleast 5 months

Nah, c9 is gonna be arse forever with this lineup unless floopy/Mezii become very, very good players (might not even help unless Alex becomes a good igl aswell and woxic is consistent). Alex, mezi and floppy all speak english as a first language and Es3tag has fine english however only played in Danish teams before and woxic have fine english with only international teams before so I would not blame that aspect on this certain international team.

ALEX is ok as an igl, hes far from the best but hes not the worst. As for woxic I do agree hes inconsistent and wouldnt mind seeing him out of the lineup, but floppy should hopefully find his comfort spot. Hes always competed online and in FPL he was playing against top NA players and had exposure to top EU players when they were in NA for events. I have hopes that the core of ALEX, floppy, and Es3tag can do well, and mezii has looked okay so far, even if the stats dont show it. I'm willing to give him time. They're also a completely new 5 man core so they have to build from scratch, so they'll need time because of that. Practice as a team helps but most teams aren't gonna use their top strats from practice in actual matches, so they just have to grind out and show why they were worth the money. At the very least I'd be willing to see woxic and mezii out but I don't know who could replace them. Smooya I could see, but I dont know who would replace mezii.

Gambit is actually looking good, I'm surprised by them, with small changes they could be a TOP 5 team maybe even. And although Cloud9 is still a new team I feel like it would be better for both the org. and players to part ways, I don't see potential in this project.

I dont rly understand why C9 end up with this line up. With that money they could build really interesting team. Meziii never played anything but tier 3, woxic is totally out of form, floppy is inconsisent, es3tag totally overpriced and alex is good igl but idk man. There are so many upcoming young star awpers, riflers etc but no.

es3tag is really good, gives them a lot firepower. mezii pretty good aswell. woxic pretty good supportive element. floppy same as woxic. And for me ALEX is overrated and won't make a good team out of this. I think they should get a better IGL and maybe it could work.
2020-12-01 08:40

well mine opinion is that alex is good IGL but players are underperforming. Woxic playing like shit. esetag is good but not good for 2,1 mil, mezii is good, but he has no experience on pro level, floppy was on fire in old cloud9, in this new lineup he sometimes hits amazing shots and sometimes underperfom. Maybe time will tell but 6 milion roster could look different :)

It's to early to say that floppy is to inconsistent, they played like 10 maps. I agree that es3tag is really good, but 2,1 mil is a price for one of the best players in the world, and he is not on that level. I agree that they overpayed this roster.
