fnatic beat Cloud9 to clinch cs_summit 7 semi-final spot

The Swedish team recovered from a slow start and completed the reverse sweep with two convincing victories.

fnatic came back from a map down to defeat Cloud9 2-1 and book their spot in the semi-final stage of cs_summit 7. The Swedish team looked a bit rusty at first as they were surprised on their own map pick of Vertigo, where Patrick "es3tag" Hansen produced his best performance since joining Cloud9, but then put on breathtaking offensive displays on the following two maps, Inferno and Overpass, to turn the match around.

The Swedish side, who will face the winner of the match between OG and Heroic next, looked promising early on as they hit back after losing the pistol and put some rounds together, but things quickly went downhill. Cloud9 tightened up their defence and dominated proceedings for the rest of the half for a 10-5 lead, with es3tag impressing with a 21-6 score and a 134 ADR.

KRIMZ helped fnatic to win the series with a 30-bomb on Overpass

Cloud9 came out of the break guns blazing, winning five rounds off the bat to hit map point. Freddy "KRIMZ" Johansson then gave fnatic their first round of the half with a 1v2 clutch, but it merely delayed the inevitable by a few moments as the international team locked down the map in the following round.

Inferno began with fnatic looking the brighter of the two sides and they hopped out to a 6-3 lead following two streaks of three round wins. But their grip on the game was never strong, and Cloud9 grew in confidence after winning a half-buy. The international team were in control in the closing stages of the half, unlocking the A defence with precise executes time and time again for an 8-7 score.

But the second half brought a more resolute fnatic side. The Swedish team set the tempo and ran all over the Cloud9 defence, dropping just two rounds before securing the map.

William "mezii" Merriman opened Overpass with a 1v2 clutch in the pistol round to put Cloud9 into the lead. That was the start of a dominant run by the international team, who raced to a 5-1 lead, but then fnatic tightened up and gradually took the upper hand for an 8-7 lead. The Swedish team carried that momentum into the second half and ran away with the game, with KRIMZ adding 13 more frags to his tally as he spearheaded the team's attack against the helpless Cloud9 defence.

brollan really played badly this series, he even said so on his twitter, fnatic winning this with jackinho popping off in place of brollan is a good sign

I was expecting better results out of Xeppaa. ALEX was top-fragging, now no disrespect to ALEX or to IGL's in question, but it is a concerning sign when your other stars of the team do not show up.

At the moment it seems that way but I don't think this loss tells of the whole story, just that ALEX played out of his mind and fnatic would've been in big trouble if KrimZ wasn't.

ALEX has played well whole tournament but let's just keep in mind they are still a new team with a new player again so decent results from this tournament after all.

Yeah Golden top-fragged the map Fnatic lost, Alex when C9 lost. Very far from a rule (see Karrigan/Mouz earlier) but it's rarely a great sign when the IGL out performs the stars.

I think it started when Pronax and Xizt practically never top-fragged a map during their respective eras, whereas Gla1ve is probably an exception to the rule as I have seen Gla1ve top-frag quite a lot of Astralis games to victory.
2021-01-30 21:59
Was thinking basically the same thing - the IGL's ability to utilise the players the right way. It's unclear to me if it's ALEX being unable to manage the team or the players unable to perform even with "proper" calls. Seems like guessing only. Maybe by checking their recent matches and conclude an opinion based on individual results? It still wouldn't tell the whole picture. It feels like they aren't able to find their footing since forming the team. Their game style looks somewhat confusing and out of sync often times, even though they have moments of a T1 team synergy feel. I wonder what will happen in the long run with this team.

Completely agree. Obviously there was the whole "10% loss" fiasco but in all honesty I don't think it would've made a difference. Cloud9 vs fnatic on Inferno was actually quite close at first but fnatic ran away with the map on the second half and Cloud9 did not have a counter at all. I look forward to seeing more of Cloud9's capability.

What do you mean by that "10% loss" fiasco? I've missed something, I guess :D I agree, this match was really close on the last two maps, but C9 lost some crucial rounds in the second half on both maps due to several reasons. Same here, let's see how they develop!

I missed Vertigo but I had wondered if they picked it as practise, I don't think they were too worried about C9.

+1 Watching Jackinho like a hawk but he looked really good that series. That being said however, I do not think fnatic were properly tested to their absolute limits in this game, so we have yet to see how well they are truly doing against some of the better teams.
