BIG unveil new academy team

The German organisation has finally put together a new roster with top prospects.

BIG announced on Thursday the new members of their academy squad. The five players, all aged between 18 and 19, were chosen after an extensive selection process that began in mid-January.

The initial shortlist consisted of over 120 players who impressed in the German FACEIT hub GoBIG League. The selection panel, which included the academy team's coach, Tugay "TuGuX" Keskin, and BIG legend Fatih "gob b" Dayik, considered several criteria, including potential, tactical awareness and communication skills.

BIG are just beginning to see the fruits of their academy project, which was launched in 2018 to guarantee a steady influx of talent in the German Counter-Strike scene. The previous academy roster, which included current ALTERNATE aTTaX duo Karim "Krimbo" Moussa and Max "PANIX" Hangebruch, peaked at No.80 in the world rankings and won 99Damage Liga Season 15.

"I am very excited to see how the team will develop in the coming months under the leadership of our academy coach, Tugay," BIG CEO Daniel Finkler said in a statement. "He brings a lot of experience from his years as a professional player.

"The goal is clear: We want to prepare these five top talents for a stint at a professional level step by step, together with our partner OMEN, and train their skills accordingly."

BIG Academy, who will compete in the next edition of 99Damage Liga, have the following roster:

Germany Niklas "NIKZEj" Burmeister
Germany Alex "DuubLex" Fominych
Germany Thierry "Sanshine" Müller
Germany Tim "tazmin" Maier
Germany Tom-Niklas "Sw1ft" Ruhnke

Germany Tugay "TuGuX" Keskin (coach)

they should do it. get like academy kato and blast and all the events. When we back on lan they can also play there. Also as finals are like normaly later in day they can be like warmup. Doesnt need to be massive prize pool or top casters/hosts running it. Also lets newer casters and hosts have a chance.

the thing is it wouldnt be worth the money for the orgs to bring their academy teams to those tourneys... sadly

Don't think we should be focusing on academy teams before we have a legitimate pro structure in place first. The sad truth of any amateur player (in any sport/video game) is that they have to live off very little while fronting most of the financial burden into getting into tournaments. Prize purses are not nearly big enough in the T1 scene to figure out how to boost lower level events where teams that may not have an organization can still attend in hopes of not only making their money back but winning money.

i think it's the plan anyway, don't remember where i heard this, but they are preparing a new academy league (we already have nip, astralis, and now big, having a new academy team at the same time, it's not for nothing )

since none of them has played in a top german team yet... they had to apply for the casting and then a jury consisting of gob b and so on invited them to play together in a little tourney where they could see them in action and then they picked out the cherries from there
