Liquid break NAVI's streak to advance to IEM Katowice semis, Virtus.pro to playoffs over FURIA

Liquid fought through two overtimes on the deciding Inferno to stop NAVI's winning streak at 10 series in a row.

Liquid have advanced to the semi-finals of IEM Katowice after beating Natus Vincere in a nail-biting three map series, which put the CIS-based side in the quarter-finals, while Virtus.pro have rounded out the playoffs teams list with a 2-0 victory against FURIA.

After picking Inferno against Natus Vincere in their previous two encounters with varying results, Liquid decided to opt for Overpass this time and reaped the benefits as they secured a narrow victory in only their second time playing the map with Gabriel "FalleN" Toledo.

Liquid put together a solid offense in large part thanks to impact plays from Keith "NAF" Markovic, which helped the North American side turn a 0-4 start into a 10-5 half. The Canadian went on to add a couple of more multikills in the second half to break NAVI's run while Jonathan "EliGE" Jablonowski and FalleN ran rampant in defense of the A bombsite, which eventually made the difference as Liquid came out on top 16-14.

Liquid outlasted NAVI after double overtime on Inferno

Natus Vincere were too much to handle on Dust2 for Liquid, the only map Aleksandr "s1mple" Kostyliev & co. have a perfect record on this year with a 5-0 balance following a one-sided affair with the FalleN-led team. The North American side struggled for momentum as NAVI denied them a chance at consecutive rounds every step of the way, locking down an 11-4 Terrorist half before closing it in quick fashion on the defense thanks to a second-round forcebuy win.

Inferno was left to decide the victor and despite the early stages looking headed towards a comfortable Liquid triumph, it was all but easy for the North American side in the end. Their 14-10 lead on the CT side wasn't enough to bring the series to a close in regulation, with Natus Vincere finding gaps in B over and over to force overtime, where after two sets Liquid brought it home on the back of some clutch play from EliGE, NAF, and Michael "Grim" Wince.

Meanwhile, the B stream showcased a back-and-forth battle between Virtus.pro and FURIA in Group B's lower bracket final, which also began on Overpass and had the CIS team come out on top 16-14 as they denied the Brazilian squad a comeback from 13-7 despite Kaike "KSCERATO" Cerato's best efforts to overturn the result.

Fired up from the first map, Mareks "YEKINDAR" Gaļinskis was a force to be reckoned with on the second, Mirage, leading from the frontlines with 11 multikills to spearhead VP's climb from a 1-8 deficit, rendering KSCERATO's heroic performance all in vain again.

No I know. They won their map because fo s1mple playing God mode. And he didn't do that on inferno or overpass and navi lose the maps lol. S1mple hard carries this shit team all the time. And one time he gets 1.16 rating and not 1.3+ that he usually gets, the team just loses. This proves how much of a carry s1mple really is

Yeah man, in high pressure matches such as these, I can't bear to watch the stream. I literally just watch the game log on the HLTV match page to see who dies during a round, lol! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Na'Vi was ahead 15-14 on Inferno and decided I'll check again after 5 minutes only to see they went into overtime and decided to watch a few rounds. I saw those unlucky rounds, it really could've gone either way in the end. I just hope that Na'Vi can best Gambit, they looked a bit scary to me in this tourney, but rather have Gambit than Team Spirit as they really surprised a lot of people (me included!).

Hard to see HLTV’s users being so mature in the comments of a thread lol I guess the game was so fucking good people just forgot their desire to troll Anyway, I’m so happy with Liquid, Stewie showing he can be very competent as entry, this is good for his confidence. Grim and NAF also had important clutches . As for Elige, no need to say anything. Best rifler in the world. Fallen had an rough day but in the end what matters are his strats and he outsmarted Navi.

It seems like the change of IGL did good to Liquid, there is still work to be done but it's going in the right direction. NaVi still got job to do, they are still making some mistakes that they were making some time ago, they need to fix it. I'm surprised that VP made it to the playoffs, but I highly doubt that they are going to win any game there. I think it's a really big upset actually that they took down FURIA, I expected the Brazilians to make it, and even make it deep in the playoffs.

Yeah? Lower tier as apposed to navi, seeing as these other teams havent been super successful in tier 1 aside from a couple lucky runs

why flamie didnt play inferno
2021-02-22 09:57
It was an amazing series between Liquid and Na'Vi - so far, the best series in iEM thus far! As for FURIA vs VP, an expected result but KSCERATO popped off big time for the team. Had the other team members been on the same level, we would've had a very different game on our hands.

What a series and that Inferno was SIIIIIIICCCK. Epic game! I hope they meet again in this tournament, would make a great final.

This was prime example why inferno is by far most entertaining map in current map pool.
